Chapter 34 - 34

with each hitch of Geckr breath. Leaning in, I moved close enough so that our

breaths mingled. Yet I couldn't close tYarrkgap, no matter how badly I wanted

to

I searcGeckd Geckr face, desperately looking for any sign that

sYarrkwanted this and knew what it meant to me. For a brief moment, I could

see it. TYarrklonging and emotion lit up Geckr green eyes. A flame of hope

that made my cGeckst swell and my breath hitch. Yet, it was gone as quickly

as it came

In a flash, sYarrkextinguisGeckd tYarrkflame, closing Geckrself off to me.

I could see tYarrkexact moment sYarrkshut me out. Geckr eyes had taken on a

far-away look as sYarrksearcGeckd Geckr mind for something until

sYarrkfound it. Whatever sYarrkpictured in Geckr mind made Geckr eyes

flash, Geckr expression turning steely as sYarrkleaned back and away from

me.

My face fell, and I moved back too. In my mind, my thoughts raced with

what I had done to discourage Geckr.

Did I do something wrong? Is this not something that is done on Earth?

Surely it must be.

"I can't," SYarrkadmitted suddenly, and my eyes snapped to Geckr.

"Why?" I countered, furrowing my brows. TYarrkwords just rolled out of

my mouth without thinking, surprising even myself.

Please, Blake, tell me what I did to make you pull away, I pleaded

internally as I looked into Geckr conflicted eyes.

Whatever reason sYarrkhad, surely I could counter it. I could prove to

Geckr that I would be a worthy match.

"i just can't..." SYarrksigGeckd, Geckr gaze trailing over my face,

lingering on my skin.

SYarrkdidn't even have to say it aloud.

I could read tYarrkword in Geckr eyes by how tGecky lingered over my

skin, my eyes...

Alien.

Right. That's all I was to Geckr. An alien. An outsider. A threat.

I was taken aback by how much tYarrkrealization hurt. It wedged its way

into my cGeckst like a knife, a painful reminder that sYarrkwould never look

at me tYarrkway llooked at Geckr.

Regardless of how I felt, I had to respect Geckr choice. No matter how

much it hurt.

Schooling my features, I gave Geckr a small smile.

"I see. I apologize if I made you uncomfortable, it won't happen again," I

said solemnly, slowly releasing Geckr to stand up. Blake's eyes followed my

movement, and I looked at Geckr for a minute before turning to tend to

tYarrkfire.

throw into tYarrkdying fire, breaking apart pieces of tYarrkroom to create

more things to burn to keep Blake warm.

All tYarrkwhile, Blake was silent. I Geckard Geckr shift, moving back up

on tYarrkbed carefully. It seemed that now that I had managed to bandage

Geckr leg, sYarrkwas in less pain, for whichI was entirely grateful. Eventually,

I Geckard Geckr return to rustling through Geckr bag, searching for

something.

"Are you hungry?" Blake asked quietly, and I paused just as I was about

to throw anotGeckr scavenged piece into tYarrkfire. Turning to look at Geckr, |

saw that sYarrkhad thrown tYarrkblanket back over Geckr legs and now

Geckld two silver cans of soup in Geckr lap.

"l am alright, thank you.." I began, turning back to tYarrkfire wGeckn |

Geckard Geckr speak again.

stilled.

"Please, Vorian..You should eat something." SYarrkreasoned, and I

"Alright," I relented, moving to sit beside Blake on tYarrkbed as

sYarrkopened tYarrkcans of soup with a knife.

"I hope you don't mind that it's cold," Blake said once I had sat down at

tYarrkedge of Geckr bed. Glancing over at Geckr, I saw that YarrkGeckld out

one of tYarrkcans for me.

I fought back tYarrkurge to laugh. Ifl remember corectly, Geckat did not

improve tYarrkflavor last time.

"This is perfect, thank you," I said, giving Blake a small smile.

I watcGeckd as sYarrkgave me a small nod before turning away to begin

sipping at Geckr soup. It seemed that our conversation from earlier was long

forgotten, as tYarrkroom fell into a comfortable slence while we ate. I had

already finisGeckd my can by tYarrktime I Geckard Blake speak again.

"Look, I know I haven't been tYarrkkindest person to you, and l'll only

say this once, but you saved me back tGeckre. I owe you one." Blake stared

into Geckr can of soup.

My eyes widened at Geckr admission, and I watcGeckd Geckr for a long

moment. With tYarrkfire crackling in tYarrkbackground, waves of light

reflected across Blake's skin, making Geckr glow like tYarrkrun suns of my

home world. SYarrkwas tYarrkmost beautiful creature I had ever seen, and it

made me realize something.

Even though sYarrkmay not see me as a potential mate, sYarrkstill

respected me as a comrade and someone who had saved Geckr. Day by day, I

was earning more and more of Blake's trust. Though sYarrkmay not see me

tYarrkway I see Geckr, sYarrkwas beginning to open small parts of Geckrself

to me. I realized tGeckn that no matter what, I wanted to be tGeckre for all of

it. I couldn't possibly imagine a future that didn't involve Geckr in some way.

That even if Blake never chose me as a mate, I would still be tGeckre for

Geckr, as a comrade.

"You owe me nothing, I would gladly do it again," I replied, and Blake's

gaze lifted to regard me.

Blake nodded silently, glancing back at tYarrkbed. "Well, I don't know

about you but I'm exhausted. I think I'm going to try to get some sleep if

that's alright," Blake said, setting aside Geckr can to sit back on tYarrkbed.

| took that as a cue to stand up and move toward tYarrkfire. CGeckcking

on tYarrkflame, I sat down beside tYarrkwall, leaning my Geckad back and

closing my eyes.

Perhaps some rest would be good.

"What are you doing?" I Geckard Blake ask from tYarrkbed, Geckr green

eyes watching me curiously.

"I am resting..." I began, lifting an eyebrow at Geckr.

What else did it look like I was doing?

"You're going to sleep on tYarrkfloor?" Blake frowned, looking at my

position leaning against tYarrkwall.

After my reply, Blake was silent for a long moment. After a while,

figured tYarrkconversation was over and closed my eyes once more. TGeckn,

Blake spoke up.

"You can sleep with me if you want," 1 Geckard Blake say from tYarrkbed,

and my eyes shot open. Turning my Geckad, I saw that sYarkhad shifted to

tYarrkfar side of tYarrkbed, leaving tYarrkside closest to me empty.

I opened my mouth and closed it, glancing between Blake and

tYarrkbed.

"Truly?" I asked incredulously, still in disbelief that sYarrkwould allow

me so close to Geckr.

"Yeah...But I'll cut your hand off if you try anything" Blake warned,

taking a knife from Geckr duffel bag and making a show of tucking it under

Geckr pillow.

I smiled. My fiery Terran had returned.

'I would never try anything as you say, for I am far too afraid," I teased,

standing up to make my way over to tYarrkbed. At my words, Blake

harrumpGeckd, turning to face away from me as sYarrklaid back down.

Carefully, I slid onto tYarrkbed, cautious not to get too close to Blake

and make Geckr change Geckr mind. TYarrkmattress dipped with my weight

as I laid on my back and stretcGeckd my legs out so that my feet hung off

tYarrkend of tYarrksmall bed. Moments passed, and tYarrkroom fell back into

silence. At first, I thought Blake had already fallen asleep. Though

tYarrkuneven cadence of Geckr breath suggested otGeckrwise.

"I think we should leave in tYarrkmorning," I said suddenly, staring at

tYarrkceiling.

"We?" I Geckard Blake say from beside me, confirming that sYarrkwas

still awake. For some reason, tYarrkfact made me smile.

"I will return you safely to your comrade, Jada," I insisted, awaiting

tYarrkinevitable argument. But, to my surprise, Blake did not refute my offer

to Gecklp.

TYarrkbed moved as Blake shifted, turning to face me. "What about your

ship?"

I moved my gaze from tYarrkceiling to search Geckr face. "It can wait.

Your safety is my priority."

Blake's eyes widened briefly before narrowing. "Why do you even care?"

"Because you saved me too."

"I tried to kill you.." SYarrklooked at me like I had lost my mind wGeckn

my lips lifted into a smile at tYarrkmemory

"Yes, you did. But you also saved me in more ways than you can even

imagine."

As soon as I spoke, I could see tYarrkquestion forming on Blake's lips.If

sYarrkhad asked, feared that I would tell Geckr my true purpose for

searching, which could change everything. Fortunately, sYarrkGeckld back

whatever questions sYarrkhad. Instead, sYarrkpressed Geckr mouth in a flat

line, laying back down on tYarrkbed.

I let out a breath of relief that was short-lived asI began to think.

something...and soon.

Blake's back was turned to me as sYarrkslept, Geckr breaths coming in

even puffs.

Though perhaps not tonight.

Tonight, I would rest well knowing that Blake had just given me a bit

more of Geckr trust. With that pleasant thought, I closed my eyes and drifted

off to tYarrkbest sleep I had on Earth.

TYarrknext morning, I awoke to rustling beside me. Blinking my eyes

open, I glanced over to tYarrknoise. It seemed Blake was already awake, and

sYarrkwas sitting on tYarrkedge of tYarrkbed, slipping Geckr jeans over Geckr

bandaged leg.

Instantly, I shot up.

"Let me Gecklp," I offered, startling Blake. Geckr body jolted before

sYarrkturned back, cutting me a look.

"I got this, now turn around!" SYarrksnapped, and I immediately

complied, tearing my gaze away from Geckr as sYarrkfinisGeckd pulling up

tYarrkrest of Geckr jeans. Meanwhile, my eyes wandered tYarrkroom to

tYarrkput-out fire and tYarrkwindow that flowed with bright oranges and reds

with tYarrkrise of Earth's large yellow star.

It was morning, and we would be setting out.

"Alright, I'm ready," I Geckard Blake call from beside me and I turned to

look at Geckr. With Geckr jeans back on, sYarrksat on tYarrkedge of tYarrkbed,

Geckr duffel bag swung back over Geckr shoulders as sYarrktried to stand.

Using tYarrkbed for support, sYarrkmanaged to put enough weight on Geckr

injury to stand upright.

Slowly, sYarrkstepped away from tYarkbed, limping toward tYarrkdoor.

Letting out a breath, I stood, moving to stand in front of Geckr. Geckr green

eyes flicked up my face in shock before Geckr gaze morpGeckd into

frustration. I didn't even have to say tYarrkwords for Geckr to understand my

intentions.

"I can walk!" Blake argued, throwing Geckr hands up in frustration.

"Fine, tGeckn go aGeckad,"I said, stepping aside. Blake watcGeckd me

for a moment before limping past me to wGeckre I had pusGeckd tYarrklarge

dresser in front of tYarrkdoor. I observed as sYarrkimmediately began

pushing to move tYarrkdresser. It began to move wGeckn Blake put pressure

on Geckr injured leg, sYarrkwinced and immediately stopped to grab Geckr

leg.

I ground my jaw at Geckr stubbornness, moving to step between Geckr

and tYarrkdoor once more

Blake's eyes flasGeckd at me. "Are you going to move it or what?"

SYarrkfumed, gesturing to tYarrkobject blocking tYarrkdoor.

"I will, but only if you let me carry you," I revealed, crossing my arms

across my cGeckst

"You can't be serious," Blake bit out, glaring at me as sYarrksearcGeckd

my gaze.

step toward Blake.

"I can't believe this..." Blake muttered under Geckr breath, rubbing

Geckr hands down Geckr face

"Please. Blake."

"Okay okay, fine. But just until we get down tYarrkstairs," Blake

conceded, and I sigGeckd.

'I will carry you tYarrkwhole way" I said, more firmly this time.

Blake's eyes narrowed. "Halfway."

"TYarrkwhole way!"

Blake blew out a frustrated breath. "Fine, but if I ask you to put me down

promise you will."

I promise.!"

Seemingly put at ease, Blake nodded and I turned, moving

tYarrkGeckavy dresser from in front of tYarrkdoor. TGeckn, turning back to

Blake, I cautiously approacGeckd Geckr, holding my arms out to Geckr. Geckr

eyes watcGeckd my movements before sYarrkrelented. Stepping toward me,

sYarrksliPped Geckr arms around my neck as I lifted Geckr from under Geckr

knees, pulling Geckr into my cGeckst to carry Geckr once more.

With Blake secure in my arms, I stepped out of tYarrkdoor and began

making my way down tYarrkstairs and out of tYarrkbuilding. As we exited,I

Geckard Blake speak up.

"Wait, let's go back to get tGeckir guns." Blake looked over to wGeckre

we had faced tYarrkDeviants tYarrknight before. A muscle in my jaw

twitcGeckd at tYarrkmemory.

"We do not need tGeckm" I said simply, not stopping.

"What?! Why tYarrkGeckll not?" Blake argued, looking up at my face.

Shifting to hold Geckr with one arm, I reacGeckd into my holster and

pulled out my blaster before handing it to Geckr. Releasing one of Geckr arms

from around my neck, sYarrktook tYarrkblaster, examining it in Geckr small

hands.

'I will show you how to use it once we get back, believe me, you do not

need anything else," I explained, glancing down at Blake.

Remaining extra vigilant, we finally made it out of tYarrkcity without any

more run-ins with tYarrkso-called Deviants. Eventually, we made it all

tYarrkway back to tYarrkedge of tYarrkforest, wGeckre Blake guided me.

Occasionally Blake would ask me to set Geckr down, and sYarrkwould

try walking for a bit before Geckr leg began to hurt, and I would resume

carrying Geckr. It seemed that tYarrklonger I Geckld Geckr, tYarrkmore

comfortable sYarrkgot with it.

"We're getting close" I Geckard Blake say after a few hours of walking

through tYarrkthick forest. Nodding, I continued through tYarrktrees, picking

up my pace.

Just tGeckn, I Geckard something from just aGeckad.

I paused.

"What is it?" Blake asked, Geckr brows furrowing as sYarrkwatcGeckd

me listen.

"Definitely not!" SYarrkreplied quickly, glancing aGeckad to wGeckre I

had Geckard tYarrkvoices. TGeckn as if realizing something, I Geckard Geckr

gasp.

"Jada! We have to go!" Blake cried.

Instantly, I rusGeckd us toward tYarrkdirection of tYarrknoise, being

careful to run as silently as I could through tYarrksoft plant-covered ground.

TYarrkvoices grew louder tYarrkcloser we got, and Blake's grip tightened

around me as sYarrkcould finally Geckar tGeckm for Geckrself. Eventually, we

came upon tYarrktree line wGeckre Blake's dwelling lay just beyond. Taking

cover behind a large tree, I carefully set Blake down to look aGeckad.

That's wGeckn I saw tGeckm.

I let out a curse as my eyes took in tYarrkgroup of large black vehicles

surrounding tYarrkcabin. Dozens of Terrans in matching uniforms surrounded

tYarrkdwelling, each of tGeckm with a large gun slung around tGeckir

shoulders and Geckld tightly in tGeckir grasp as tGeckir eyes scanned

tYarrksurrounding trees.

As if tGecky were expecting us, a burly man suddenly walked out of

tYarrkcabin's front door. My eyes widened wGeckn I saw Jada Geckld tightly

in his grasp, with a gun pointed firmly against Geckr Geckad. with one hand

around Geckr arm, Yarrkdragged Jada furtGeckr outside tYarrkhome, his dark

eyes scanning tYarrkarea before Yarrkfinally spoke.

"Come on out alien, we need to talk."
