Chapter 1 - A Fresh Canvas

In a new place, I feel so free.

No one knows me, just let me be.

The city's like a mystery book,

A story unfolds. Come, take a look.

Never felt this way, it's all so new,

Like a blank page where dreams come true.

No old problems, no worries to bring,

In this new city, I'll spread my wings.

 A Fresh Canvas

In my cozy place, the morning light woke me up gently. I felt a little nervous, like something new was about to happen. Today was the day—a fresh start in a town. I love this feeling of being anonymous in a new city.I've never felt this way before.

My new home was safe, but it reminded me of things I wanted to forget. I promised to keep my past hidden because it feels like a tough puzzle I have to solve by myself.

Those memories would stay secret, away from curious eyes and gossip in this new place.

Starting fresh was really important. It wasn't just about finding a new home; it was about making a whole new story for myself, without the weight of my old bitter past. This town was like a blank page where I could be anyone I wanted without the problems I had before.

Through a bunch of ups and downs, I figured out something pretty cozy: those lines on my hands don't really shape our destinies. It's up to us to create our own paths and make our own stories.

As the day began, I got ready to go out, really hoping to make a life where my past wasn't a big deal and where the future was full of new opportunities.

Walking down the busy streets, I smelled something amazing. It led me to a cute café called "Sweet Hope." There was a sign outside saying they had job openings.

Since I needed a part-time job for my errands, I went inside, thinking about grabbing a bite and maybe asking about the job. The cozy atmosphere and the chance for a good meal made me excited as I went into the café.

I sat in a quiet spot, enjoying the smell of coffee and munching on a delicious pastry. It was a small treat that made me feel good, especially with all the things I wasn't sure about.

The lady serving at the café came up to my table and asked, "What will you have now?"

"I'd like a hot coffee and some pastry, please," I replied.

"Are you new around here? I haven't seen you before," she inquired.

"Yeah, I just moved in with my dad," I answered, smiling.

The lady, Ms. Wilson, serving at the café, was really kind, chatting with me like we were old friends. Her warmth made me feel a bit more at ease. It felt like a safety net in a place full of strangers, making me feel more relaxed.

I asked for a part-time job, and she gave it to me after asking some questions. Since I'm in high school, she let me choose my work hours. The pay is enough for my monthly expenses.

I'm going to begin my new job starting tomorrow. It's the weekend right now, so I still have two more days before school starts.

The next morning, I woke up really early. I figured it was Saturday, so the café might get busier, and I thought Ms. Wilson might need some help. I decided to head in before my shift started.

When I got there, Ms. Wilson greeted me with her usual warm smile. She was happy I came in early and asked me to take care of some table orders. I didn't waste any time and got right to it.

I started taking orders from the tables, trying to be friendly with a smile. After a while, I noticed a man sitting alone in the corner of the café, working on his laptop for a long time. I thought he might be busy with his work, so I went up to him calmly.

"Hello, good morning! What would you like for breakfast today?"

He requested another coffee, with three spoons of sugar, and made sure it wasn't too hot. I noticed he was wearing a black hoodie and a black mask, so I couldn't see his face clearly.

"Sure, anything else?" I asked politely.

"No, just clean the table,"he replied, his voice carrying a certain air of quiet determination.

I saw one empty coffee cup on his table, so I quickly picked it up and tidied his table.

I was curious about him, so I asked Ms. Wilson. She said,

"Don't worry, he's a regular. Just give him what he wants."

She smiled and told me not to disturb him, so I nodded and continued working. I made sure to give him his coffee just the way he liked it.

But when I handed him his coffee, I accidentally glimpsed his laptop and saw pictures of dead bodies. I was shocked to the core, heart pounding in my chest., —

I almost spilled his coffee!

But I managed to hold myself together and gave him his coffee as quickly as I could, then hurried away from his table.

I wondered why he kept looking at those scary pictures of dead bodies on his laptop. It made me really curious. Maybe those bodies were his artwork, and he looks at them over and over because they make him happy. Oh gosh, just thinking about it gave me intense goosebumps.

It's almost lunchtime now, and I've been busy taking care of lots of table orders. People are leaving the café after eating. The café is quiet now, and it's finally my lunch break.

Just as I was about to take my break, Ms. Wilson asked me to see if the man in the corner wanted lunch. He's been there since morning, glued to his laptop for about four hours. I started wondering if something was off with him, like maybe he was a psycho man.

I was a bit scared to approach him again, but I couldn't say no to Ms. Wilson—I've got to take table orders as part of my job.

Slowly, I made my way over to his table and asked politely,

"Good afternoon, sir. Would you like to have lunch here?"

He wasn't wearing his mask anymore, and he pushed back his hoodie. I can see his face clearly now. He had sea-blue eyes, jet black hair, and fair skin. He looked quite muscular too. I couldn't deny that he was handsome. But I remembered hearing on the news that some bad people can look handsome too. Handsome doesn't mean they're good people.

"One egg sandwich with meat, but no olives," he said in a deep, strong voice.

I quickly took his order and hurried away from his table. I just hoped he'd eat his lunch and leave the café soon. All I could do was pray for that.

A little while after I finished making his sandwich, just as I was getting ready to hand it over to him, I noticed. He was in a big hurry, and started packing things into his bag like there was a race against time.

The college students finished their food and left the café. Before I could catch up to him, he also left right after the students.

It struck me as quite odd – if he was in such a hurry to leave, why did he bother placing an order in the first place?

What a strange fellow he turned out to be!
