Chapter 1 - Eastward

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!"

Wind rushes past my rapidly falling body as I squeeze my eyes shut, frantically lashing my arms and legs out into the open air.

Wind tears at my body, yanking at my face and clothing. Slowly opening my eyes, I realize I'm plummeting through a cloud.

Cool water droplets cover my face and clothes, and I breathe in damp water vapor. In a few seconds, I drop out of the cloud and am greeted with a wide expanse of blue.

A clear teal sky, dotted with fluffy white clouds, stretches to the horizon. Below me is a bright, almost crystalline sea- that I'm rapidly falling towards.

Adrenaline pumps through my body as I get closer and closer to the water, my face grows hot, and I can feel my heart beating rapidly in my chest, panic setting in.

As the ocean grows larger and larger before me, a pit of dread forms in my stomach, and bile stings the back of my throat.

The only thing I can see other than the endless ocean is a huge, dark mound steadily rocking to the rhythm of the ocean's current.

In desperation, I claw at the open air in front of me, in an attempt to land on the grey mass.

When I realize that I won't be able to reach it in time, I close my eyes, letting myself fall. At least I will die quickly when I impact the water.

In what will probably be the last act of my life, I claw at the air one last time... and feel a firm hand, yanking me forward!

Blinking my eyes open, I see nothing that could have pulled me, just more open air.

My body is flung forward, and I swallow a bit of vomit before realizing that I'm now above the grey mound.

Having a much better view of it I am shocked to see it moving!

The mound rises upwards towards me, lazily floating up, dozens of... fins?-paddle through the air and the mound opens two eyes and a colossal mouth, letting out a deep rumbling groan.

The dark mound is an enormous whale, whose back I am rapidly plummeting towards!

When I am fifty feet away from its back, giving up hope, a hole in the whale's back opens, sending a blast of water directly at me.

My mind spins as I stare down at the rising collum of water shooting up at me.

Tucking myself into a ball, I prepare for death but feel myself being lifted, before falling back down into cool ocean waters.

Shocking cold seeps into my body as I plunge into the water.

The taste of salt stings my chapped lips. I paddle up towards the rays of sunlight streaming through cool blue waters, and surface, gasping for breath.

Looking up, I see the massive figure of the whale, its many fins lazily paddling through open air as if it were liquid.

Thousand of barnacles, and huge lengths of green plants layer its white underside. As the goliath floats- no, swims through the sky it lets out a beautiful hum, a sound deeper than anything I have ever heard. The note echoes out across the cool ocean, and soon, the massive whale disappears into the clouds.

Taking I deep breath, I assess my surroundings.

I'm slowly treading water, alone, in the middle of the sea, after falling from the sky and landing on top of a giant flying whale.

Pushing myself upwards, I peer over the gently lapping waves, squinting at the expanding horizons around me.

Eventually, I spot a tiny dot and start swimming toward it, streaking through the salty water in an attempt to reach the dot.

I've never been a good swimmer, but my fitness allows be to push forward, though my arms and legs gradually grow numb the farther I pull myself through the waves.

After hours of swimming, the taste of salt water has dried up my throat, and the time under the sun has my skin peeling.

Exhaustion sets in, but I can see the dot becoming bigger, and continue propelling myself through the water.

The dot approaches, and I eventually realize it's not an island, but a ship, sailing towards me!

The ship is at least a hundred feet long, with many large oars sticking out of its sides, like the legs of a giant insect. It is wooden, with peeling white paint and large cannons poke out from its sides.

The name "The Emerald" is painted on the side of the boat, written in nautical lettering. A green flag waves at the bow of the vessel, signaling that this is a friendly merchant cruiser.

I yell and wave at the ship, and the sound of yelling men grows louder and louder as the ship approaches. As 'The Emerald' gets closer, I spot figures moving around on deck above me.

The vessel slows to a halt, it looms over and for a second, I am afraid it will ram into me. I swim to the side of The Emerald where the crew has dropped a ladder down for me.
