Jack let out a deep breath " But he won't remember anything, which means he's gonna lose his memories "
Ava staggered back on her feet in shock. She took the nearest chair and slumped into it. Jack looked at her with an unreadable expression. He scrolled through his phone mindlessly. He was shocked by the news too, she realized.
" Forever? " She whispered, her hands folded on her thighs.
He shook his head " Nope, that's the good news. He's bound to regain his memory soon or later, in three months or less " He ended his words with a shrug.
" Oh, " She muttered.
" Yeah " He nodded.
" That means he's not gonna remember us? " She asked quietly.
" Some particular events maybe " He shrugged, uncertainty evident in his features.
" Really? " Her eyes widened with hope.
" Will he remember his family though? " She asked thoughtfully.
" Maybe, I'm not sure. He'll have to undergo surgery that will enable him to talk " He said and was lost in thought for a while.
" Wow, but why is his doctor telling you that now? He should have done that ages ago! " She exclaimed, still overwhelmed by the news.
"Ava, he did some research not long ago, and he called me immediately he found out that there's a way he could make Alex talk " Jack explained calmly.
" Ohh " She nodded slowly, absorbing the information. She was lost in thought for a while too.
" What's wrong? You look kinda lost, are you okay? " He asked, his head etched in concern for her already.
She smiled but Jack could see it was a sad smile and didn't quite reached her eyes.
Jack obviously didn't believe her and he made it known to her " I don't believe you " He stated in a low voice " Tell me what's up with you "
She heaved a sigh and finally let out her fear " Once he regain his memory, my service here as a babysitter won't be needed anymore, would it? "
Jack smiled in reassurance " Of course you'll still be part of the family, they need more hands here so you can help with one or two things "
He added " And you'll continue to be his babysitter because Alex is worse to live with, he actually needs someone to keep him in check and my gut tells me you're the right person "
Ava blushed and looked relieved on hearing she wouldn't be kicked out. Where would she go? She shuddered at the thought the shield she gained in such a short time.
" Thank you " She said quietly.
He smiled warmly " You're welcome "
" Any other worries? " He asked in a teasing tone.
She shook her head " Not really, when will he go for the surgery? "
He looked lost in thought " In a week's time, I think. I'll call the doctor to confirm the day he'd be going for the surgery "
She nodded slowly " Oh okay "
" I just hope Alex cooperate with us and not give us any more problems than we're dealing with already " Jack looked worried as he spoke.
" It's my job to make sure he does, isn't it? I'll do my best to ensure he cooperates, it's for his good after all " She smiled at him convincingly.
He gave her a grateful smile " Thanks a million, Ava "
" Don't mention " She said and waved her right hand in a dismissive way.
She stood up " I've been gone for so long, I told Alex I was only coming down to get some drinks "
" Gotcha, you may not meet me out here again, I have to go home real quick "
She nodded " Okay, see ya later then "
She got the drinks and proceeded upstairs to Alex's room.
" You taking Liam with you? " She shouted from the top of the stairs.
" Of course! I don't know if I'll come here again today " He yelled back.
She nodded, and turned back towards the direction of his room. She succeeded on not getting tripped by the stairs and one of the drinks splashed a little on the tray. She knocked on Alex's door once and as usual, there was no reply so she carefully placed the drinks in one hand and entered the code with another. The door swished open and she went in.
Alex was sitting by his desk, scribbling something on a note. He didn't look up to acknowledge her presence so she frowned, what was he doing that was so important that he didn't even look up to acknowledge her presence? She asked herself. He never acknowledge your presence in his room, you know that, here came the voice in her head. She groaned inwardly, when have you ever taken my side? Betrayal, she threw back with a huff. It was crazy really, how she talked to herself and assumed her mental voice was a human. She would definitely be termed as being crazy if people knew she talked to herself.
She shrugged, not that she was a normal human anyway, Ben and Bobby deprived her of that. She didn't get to live a normal human life when she lived with them. Sighing, she pushed her past aside, she was free now, she thought in glee. For now, the voice in her head reminded and she practically felt like killing the voice, but unfortunately, it was her other half and she would be dead too. Must you remind me of that?! I know, ugh! She fired back and waited for a reply but it didn't came. She sighed, she really needed to go see a doctor and have her brain checked out. She was going crazy really.
" Hi Alex, what are you doing? " She asked gaily, placing the drinks and she walked over to him.
He continued writing like he hadn't heard her voice and she sighed. He really should learn to show some courtesy, it was the only polite thing to do but who was she to tell him that?
" Alex, what are you writing? " She asked again and peered into the note in his hands.
" My name? This is my name, Alex, why are you scribbling my name over and over again? " She asked smiling, happy that he at least thought of her. In the process of checking out what he wrote, she had unconsciously placed her hands on his shoulders.
