"He doesn't leave his room, I know I shouldn't have bought that damn thing for him. But no, you want our son to be happy!" A male voice screamed out.
"You don't want your son to be happy! Is that what you're saying, Greg!" A female voice screamed back.
"Don't you put words in my mouth." The male voice retorted and he heard a scream from the kitchen, as if the female had been slapped.
These were Harvey's parents, they argued a lot for various reasons, today's argument just happened to be about his love for gaming, his father believed it had made him unsociable and introverted and while he wanted to snatch back the device, his mother had stopped him.
His father was an alcoholic, he didn't tell this to anyone who asked, not even the police or his girlfriend, he wished he had in hindsight. He wished he had told her more things, what he liked to eat, what he liked to cook, his favorite TV show.
His parents had died in a car crash when he was fourteen, as they exited their drive through they argued about him, and not looking behind them, they backed into a truck that instantly killed them both.
He lived with his aunt for years, which was why he wasn't sent to a foster family. But just like his father, his aunt had been a drug addict. She came home high multiple times until the day she didn't come home again.
That was all he had known since that time, he stopped gaming despite how good he was at it, the memories were too overpowering. If he didn't play that stupid game, maybe his parents would be alive today, there was never a day the thought didn't cross his mind.
[TreeJake Is Active]
The environment was dark, faint blue lights seeped in but he could feel himself slipping. His memories came back to him in a flash and he understood where he was, and why he was there.
Using the last bits of his strength he pushed out the rocks above him, the floor boss was close enough to him but it hadn't spotted him yet.
He had survived the collapse with just 1 HP remaining, the odds baffled him. Despite equipping his daggers, he found himself lacking the strength to fight or even live. Having lost so much, what right did he have to persist?
"I love you."
He had never gotten to say those words back to her, not once. He had never gotten to tell her so many things and now she was gone, forever. Using his dagger he stabbed into a rock and with his other hand he pushed the large rock to the side, the TreeJake noticed him and began its rush.
Its health was remaining quite a large chunk and his was near-nonexistent, it was a fight he couldn't win... no, he could win. It would be easy to do so, but his mind continued its battle and eventually, he lost.
The Treejake slammed its vine into Harvey pushing him into a wall at the other side of the room, that was where his story ended. However, Harvey opened his eyes, his health still remained at one. There was no way he should've survived that, unless.
He looked at his stats and his luck which he hadn't put any points into had been swapped out with another. The only person he knew with that ability and luck stat was Elizabeth. "Hm, hahaha." Harvey let out a laugh, he stood up, grabbing his daggers off the floor. "I wanted to throw my life away, the same life my girlfriend sought to protect. Harvey Laurier when will you ever grow a pair."
The TreeJake swung several vines at Harvey and quickly he dodged them while darting toward it, at the same time he read his innate ability.
Cause and Effect was the ability he was granted while entering VISIDIA, the ability allowed him to erase a specific cause or effect he could see. He didn't understand this until now.
He ducked over another vine and lathered his blades in fire, using the speed boost granted by the spell to quickly dart toward the boss. Erasing a cause would make that scene never play out, however, the effect would still occur, it's like putting a kettle on a stove, erasing the cause which was you turning on the fire but still having the water get hot, vice versa.
While still running toward the TreeJake, Harvey activated his innate technique, erasing the cause which was him attacking the boss and just like he predicted. It still took damage.
He ran toward it as it wallowed in confusion, slashing at it multiple times before it began swinging its vines at him. He darted backward now putting his daggers in a reverse grip. "I made her a promise right?"
Using a move it gained due to its second stage, the TreeJake unleashed a technique, hurling small, sharp pieces of wood along with several vines.
Harvey, on the ground, utilized a large boulder as a makeshift shield against the ranged assault. Even though his technique was available, it was still under a cooldown of twenty seconds.
Emerging from cover before the vine could break through, Harvey's health lingered at one percent, with no regeneration until he exited the room. Despite having two more potions, he chose not to use any. Not yet.
The boss's arm which were multiple vines, began swinging down at a rapid pace, vertical attacks were harder to dodge but Harvey avoided them, bobbing and weaving in-between them until he got up close to the monster and coating his swords in his first form he slashed the monster again.
Stunned, the TreeJake had fallen, and Harvey seized the opportunity to relentlessly assault it, steadily reducing its health with each strike.
Even after the form's effects had ended, he persisted in slashing. As the monster began to rise, Harvey continued the assault. Despite taking a direct hit from the swinging vine, the damage effect was nullified, enabling him to land the decisive blow before being pushed away.

Collapsed on his back, Harvey's stamina, mana, and health were depleted, yet he had triumphed over the floor boss. "Is this what you wanted Elizabeth? My survival, all for what..."

Harvey walked through the rubble, pushing pieces of debris away until eventually he revealed Elizabeth's body. Pain washed over him and his tears fell on her clothes, he fell on his knees next to her, holding her cold hands.
It was all his fault. He knew, he scorned, loathed and blamed himself but she didn't. He stood up, grabbing her arm as he lifted her onto his back. His goal was to find a peaceful place to bury her and after that. He'd kill both Harlow and Arla.
