Chapter 15 - Incarceration

When Ken chanced on his overseer, Dr. Lee, and the three policemen, he plotted to flee away from the ground like a rat savaged by a wildcat in its nest in the debris. However, his intention was quickly noticed by one of the policemen before Okut answered the question asked by Dr.Lee.

Shortly, all the policemen advanced towards Ken, and as soon as Ken saw them approach him closer, he rose to take to his heels, but he was grabbed and dropped to the ground like a bird shot to death from the top of a tall tree. From then on, he lay humbly on the ground as the policemen watched over him. He continuously moved his head around, looking in all directions as if he had spies in the environment.

Finally, Okut resumed and said, "He is a nurse at Lagoro

Health Centre IV."

"Is that all you know?" Dr. Lee inquired again.

"Please, doctor! That is not all. I was still retrieving facts. First and foremost, many people know him as a harsh, unfriendly, and coldhearted nurse. Secondly, he is an incorrigible rummy with unpleasant behaviours. He must be the chairman of Boozers in the place. Thirdly, he trains his fellow youths to chew a certain plant, calling it weed. When you find them seated around a table enjoying themselves, you can only imagine sitting cows on chairs chewing grass that they toiled to bring to one place. He must face the court of law!" Okut explained.

"We have got the information we wanted. So, doctor, what are your expectations from us in going about this matter?" Mr. Yen stepped in again.

"I think two-month confinement may help modify his behaviours. He will then return to the facility where I will conduct a thorough examination over some time to ensure his successful transformation," Dr. Lee suggested.

"The upshot of a two-month imprisonment will not exert a salutary impact on him" An anonymous person shouted from the crowd.

"Well! Doctor, why not a one-year incarceration? Don't you think it would be better?" Mr. Yen asked. Susurrant voices filled up the scene. Nearly the entire gathering at the place indulged in discussion of the matter in their different capacities as Doctor Lee and the team tried to find solutions. Ken's heart rate escalated beyond normal. He continuously underwent deep breaths as he awaited the final decision. He was rendered pessimistic about escaping as his security was highly reinforced. So, he had no option but to stay put under authority.

"My friend, a year in jail is too much. It sounds like an eternity. I need him confined only to serve a warning to him and others who are still caught up drinking recklessly. So, do as I say!" Dr. Lee argued.

"It is fine. You had a preset plan for your subordinate. Therefore, we shall follow your decision," Mr. Yen confirmed.

"Get him now!" Yen commanded the two other policemen. They immediately seized Ken from the ground, but when he tried to resist, he was whipped once and regained his tranquillity again. He was dragged to the vehicle very quickly like a toy, and they set off shortly for Olaku police station. A gathering was left behind, and people gradually reduced in number as they continuously moved away.

Dr. Lee drove very speedily. Just on reaching the police station, even before they could enter the gate to the police station, Dr. Lee received a phone call.

"Ring! Ring!" He picked up the cell phone immediately and answered. "Yes! Dr. Kang, tell me! What is going on?" he asked.

"We need your help now. There is an emergency here, and only you can help deal with the situation! Where are you?" Dr. Kang inquired.

"I have been busy dealing with a matter, but it's almost resolved. I shall not delay here anymore. Wait! In ten minutes, I shall be there. Please continue doing all you can to save the patient's life."

A patient had been rushed in, critically ill. He was suffering from cardiac arrest. Dr. Lee was the only cardiologist at the facility, so only he could handle the situation.

Shortly following the phone conversation, the vehicle stopped. The travellers were already at their destination inside the Olaku police station compound.

Dr. Lee demanded a prompt leave as he needed to see a patient who required his close attention. Yen ordered Ken to immediately exit the car. The latter exited the car like a shot, accompanied by the other two policemen. He knew that if he delayed, he would be whipped instantly.

As Ken was being taken into a police cell, Dr. Lee left for work.

"Stay well Mr. Yen, and extend my sincere gratitude to the colleagues you went with to aid the bringing of the culprit. I cannot stay here because I am urgently needed at the hospital," said Dr. Lee.

"Go well, doctor," replied Mr. Yen.

Dr Lee set off for Lagoro Health Centre IV straightaway. He drove fast enough to reach the facility in minimum time.

Ken was brought back to a police office. After a brief interview with Mr. Yen, he was charged with office abuse. Dr. Lee, Ken's supervisor, had decided that he would not be taken to court. Instead, he would be imprisoned for two months without bail. After serving his sentence, he would be allowed to return to work. Ken was then taken to a cell where he was placed with other minor offenders.
