Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 - Overtime

Alisha entered her office at the hotel, her mind still filled with the events of the previous night. Her usual air of authority and sharpness seemed muted, leaving the staff wondering about the change in her demeanor. Whispers circulated among them, but no one dared to approach her.

As she walked into her office, Alisha's eyes fell upon Jake Lewis, her newly appointed secretary. He was diligently organizing files with a focused expression, completely absorbed in his work. A mixture of annoyance and confusion crossed her face as she remembered that he was the one responsible for this intrusion into her workspace.

She cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure before speaking. "Jake," she called out, her voice laced with a touch of impatience. "What are you doing in my office? I wasn't informed about any changes."

Jake turned around, a hint of surprise evident in his eyes. "Good morning, Ms. Alisha," he greeted respectfully. "I apologize if there was any miscommunication. I was assigned as your new secretary to assist you in managing your tasks more efficiently."

Alisha's frown deepened, a mix of irritation and curiosity tugging at her. She hadn't requested a new secretary, but perhaps this change could bring some benefits. She decided to probe further.

"Efficiency, huh?" she mused, crossing her arms. "Well, let's see if you can live up to that claim. I have high expectations, Jake. Don't disappoint me."

Jake's eyes met hers, a glimmer of determination reflecting in his gaze. "I assure you, Ms. Alisha, I will do everything within my abilities to meet your expectations. I understand the importance of maintaining a smooth workflow and ensuring your needs are met."

Alisha's stern expression softened slightly as she observed the sincerity in Jake's words. She realized that his presence could potentially alleviate some of the burdens she had been carrying. Yet, she couldn't help but remain cautious.

"I'll be watching closely," she warned, her voice a blend of skepticism and curiosity. "But for now, organize those files and show me what you're capable of."

Jake nodded, his determination unwavering. "Of course, Ms. Alisha. I'll get right to it."

As Alisha settled into her chair, her mind began to shift from her personal struggles to the professional realm. She couldn't deny that having a competent secretary might just be the silver lining she needed in her current state of disarray.

Alisha buried herself in her work, determined to push the events of the previous night to the back of her mind. As she delved into her tasks, she couldn't help but notice Jake's efficiency and intelligence. His quick thinking and ability to anticipate her needs impressed her, although she made sure not to show it openly.

Every now and then, she would steal glances in Jake's direction, observing his confident demeanor as he flawlessly handled the responsibilities of his new role. A part of her admired his capabilities, but she remained guarded, convinced that he was merely trying to impress her.

After a while, Alisha couldn't help but feel a tug of curiosity. She wondered if Jake's skills were genuine or if he was simply putting on a show. Determined to find out, she decided to test him.

She leaned back in her chair, folding her arms across her chest, and fixed him with a scrutinizing gaze. "Jake," she began, her tone neutral yet laced with a hint of challenge. "I must admit, you seem to be handling things quite well for someone new. But I can't help but wonder if it's all an act to impress me."

Jake's eyes met hers, undeterred by her skepticism. He leaned forward slightly, his expression earnest. "Ms. Alisha, I understand your reservations. However, I assure you that my skills and dedication are genuine. I believe in the importance of making a positive impact and contributing to the success of our team."

Alisha's eyebrows arched slightly as she absorbed his response. She had expected a defensive or evasive reply, but Jake's unwavering confidence piqued her interest. Perhaps there was more to him than she had initially assumed.

Suppressing a hint of a smile, she decided to give him a chance. "Prove it then," she challenged, her voice firm yet laced with curiosity. "Show me that your efficiency is not just a facade. Impress me with your problem-solving skills, and maybe, just maybe, you'll earn my trust."

Jake's face brightened with determination. "I gladly accept the challenge, Ms. Alisha. I will strive to exceed your expectations and demonstrate my abilities through action."

As the day wore on, Alisha found herself gradually warming up to Jake's presence. She observed how he effortlessly handled demanding tasks, swiftly resolving issues and streamlining processes. While she remained guarded, she couldn't deny the value he brought to her professional life.

However, deep down, Alisha couldn't help but wonder if there was more to their connection than just work. She pondered the possibility of a genuine connection, one that extended beyond the office walls. But for now, she would keep her feelings in check, determined to unravel the enigma that was Jake Lewis.

Alisha's fingers continued to dance across the keyboard, completely engrossed in her work. The hours had slipped away unnoticed, and the dimming light outside had escaped her attention. Lost in her own thoughts, she didn't hear the soft knock on her office door.

Startled, Alisha turned her head to see Jake standing there, concern etched across his face. His presence disrupted her focus, and she frowned slightly, wondering why he had interrupted her.

"Boss, it's getting late," Jake spoke up, his voice gentle but laced with worry. "Especially with the red moon tonight, shouldn't you consider going home?"

Alisha's gaze shifted from Jake to the window behind him. As she looked outside, her heart skipped a beat. The sky was awash with hues of crimson, the ominous glow of the red moon casting an eerie atmosphere over the city.

A chill ran down Alisha's spine, and she felt her body tense up. Fear clawed its way into her chest, rendering her momentarily speechless. The memories of the previous transformation flooded back, mingling with the growing unease of the present moment.
