⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀┋ P6: CAT QUEST ┋
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀╚························╝
With the first rays of sunlight coming through his window, Jhon lifted his arm trying not to be blinded by the overwhelming sun that had been shining since the early hours.
<
He looked up as he heard a couple of purrs, finding the feline asleep on his chest. <
"Hey...it's morning already. Wake up, Molly," he whispered, stroking her head, to which she let out a long meow, her fur ruffled.
<
Jhon remembered the strange attitude this one had taken the night before, and saw her full of dust. He noticed that this one had spent the night cleaning up her mess, despite the fact that he told her he would clean it up himself.
<
He turned to look at Molly, who was still dozing as if she hadn't noticed his escape. He could hear her meowing softly, as if muttering something in a worried tone. He approached this one to stroke her head and give her a hug by wrapping his arms around her side, listening as she stopped her whimpering, quietly falling back to sleep.
<
Jhon smiled and turned, dodging the still broken hole in the floor and opened the door to her room.
<>
As he entered the room, he noticed how spotless the room had become. It was as it had been the previous morning, when he first found her with a plate of food in her hands. The scene touched his heart for a moment, and then he headed to the bathroom to wash his face.
<
He passed by the living room dining room, where he noticed that there were a couple of dishes prepared beforehand. Opening his eyes in disbelief, he approached curiously, noticing that they were warm.
<
Jhon ate them with all gusto, and devoured them in one bite. The taste was alibaba his palate from the dishes he used to eat days ago, so much so that he refused to ever eat anything that wasn't this delicious ever again.
<>.
After putting the plate back in its place, he thought aloud to himself.
<>
As she let her feelings out, she made sure to prepare him a dish of what she knew how to make, leaving him at the table in the same manner a plate of food with rice, tuna and a fried egg on top.
"Food served!" she exclaimed, leaving it on the table with great energy and a bright smile on her cheerful face.
............
<
Tuna, rice and egg. That's all he knew how to serve on a plate.
However, he took the bottle of ketchup and wrote on top of the fried egg something that might change things....
"Thank you for coming back into my life. I love you."
<
With breakfast for Molly already made, he walked out the door with his backpack, and closing the door carefully. She would know that this one wouldn't just walk out, as they had agreed along with the brown cat that she wouldn't leave the house lest she be discovered.
<> he said to himself, closing the door carefully.
He made his way to the bus stop to catch a bus, and sat down in the seat all the way to the back, setting about reviewing his notes in his notebook.
As he let his thoughts fly, he scribbled on the pages of his notebook Molly, trying to portray her to no avail, so he simply erased it, embarrassed.
Jhon immersed himself in his notes, trying to keep his mind focused on the upcoming class.
However, and inevitably, only worries about Molly abounded in his head.
What had driven her to behave this way? Her determination to help him and make his life more comfortable was touching, but it also generated in him a mixture of gratitude and concern. He didn't want her to feel obligated to take care of him like that.
As he mentally reviewed Molly's actions, he tried to remember if there was anything he had said or done that would lead her to behave in that helpful manner. <
The glow of her phone diverted his attention. With a glint of determination in her eyes, she scanned the recipe app she downloaded before moving, examining each step in detail.
<
On the phone screen, images of different dishes with unusual ingredients scrolled by with their respective instructions, leaving him impatient.
Among so many recipes, he was finally able to come up with one that he noticed he might be able to make that very night.
<
The sound of the bus bell brought him out of his concentration. He saved his phone with the recipe in favorites and got up to get off at his stop.
It was early, and several students were just getting on. This time he wouldn't make the same mistake as before, that was for sure.
He made his way to his classroom, encountering the same brown cat from before, this time waiting for him at the top of a tree, meowing as soon as he saw him.
"Ah, good morning to you too." he greeted him, trying to flash a friendly smile, hoping thus to convince him not to accuse him like yesterday.
"Meoooou."
It seemed he was tired just the same, so he smiled gratefully at his luck.
He would walk up the stairs and into his classroom, where he would find a couple of his female classmates and a boy sitting and chatting with each other, to which he greeted them by raising his hand, to which they looked at him and followed by that they went back to their usual conversation.
Jhon still didn't know anyone in the room, but he wanted to make an effort to change that as well. He just had to find the right moment.
He sat back in his seat and looked out the window to make sure no one was spying on him, and fortunately they were.
He pulled out his notebook and began to go over his notes once more, if not before seeing a girl's finger pointing to Molly's half-erased sketch on one of the sheets.
Jhon looked up, seeing one of the two girls who had approached him with a cold stare. This one wore the same blue uniform as everyone at school, but her white hair and red eyes made his hair stand on end.
"... Also... do you... have a cat?" This one lifted her hair that she posed in front of her ear and tucked it behind her ear, keeping her distance from the young man with her full arm's length.
Jhon balked, wiggling his right foot like a tick with trepidation. He had to calm down, there was nothing for that girl to suspect, he told himself.
"Too bad."
Without further ado, this one turned and made her way back to her seat again.
However, Jhon would not miss the opportunity to do his bidding to learn more about her salon.
"But... I love cats." he confessed to her, making her stand still. This one turned her head slightly, and looked at him with her cool gaze.
"Prove it. There are five cats in this room right now, point them out."
<
As Jhon looked to his sides worried that more cats would harass him, the girl's friends told him to leave it alone and sit down. However, this one pointed to the boy's sketch.
"This is the first one. If you find the rest of them in a minute, I'll give you a million dollars."
Dumbfounded, Jhon watched as her friends on this one stood up in surprise, while this one waited for her answer.
"Fifty-nine seconds."
<
"Fifty-eight."
<
However, this one kept counting, pulling a check out of her pocket, writing down the mentioned figure and holding it between her index fingers and thumbs to show it.
Bank Check, by sample of Elena Banchior pay for this check to _________________________ ONE MILLION DOLLARS AND ZERO CENTS. Paying Bank: Royal Francheus Banchior Bank
Jhon froze, watching the girl count already in forty-nine seconds.
He looked at the clothes she was wearing, identifying an insignia that set her apart from the rest of the uniforms. It was a shield.
The family crest characteristic of a millionaire family, written on this Francheus Bonchoir, all in gold. And from what he noticed, it was real gold.
"Thirty seconds."
The girl's friends started looking around for the cats she was commenting were somewhere in the classroom, which put Jhon on alert as well who took too long to react.
<
It was a real check, with room left over to simply put his name on it. With that money he could get a better place to stay with Molly, better food, and even bring her gifts or remodel the house so they could live better. Plus he could cover health insurance if he needed it.
He didn't understand how he'd gotten to that point, but he joined the search for the cats, going over to the window to look for them.
"Twenty seconds."
The girl kept her cool gaze to eyes solely focused on Jhon, who was rummaging through his companions' drawers, finding nothing.
However, she managed to understand the first clue he had given her.
She had pointed to Molly's drawing and considered it to be a cat. So, the other cats could be other cats drawn or things that formed the face or silhouette of a cat.
"Ten seconds."
Jhon scanned the entire room, looking everywhere for anything in the shape of a cat.
The blackboard, the seating, the structure of the room, the order of the books, the order of the seats, the location of the broom with the dustpan... Anything or object in the room he tried to place and make sense of that could make it look like a cat.
But there wasn't a single thing that could be likened to one.
"Five seconds."
Jhon turned to hear the girl and, running quickly to his seat, grabbed his notebook and did the only thing he could think of.
"Four seconds."
<
"Three seconds!"
He was drawing on the paper of his notebook as if his life depended on it, making scribbles similar to his drawing of Molly as fast as possible.
"Two seconds."
Finally, he set his notebook down on the table and stood up, exhaling with a sharp intake of breath.
"One..."
Jhon picked up his notebook and held it out to her, placing it in front of her. To which the latter replied:
"Zero... I've got it. Here... in this notebook, there are five cats, just like the ones you pointed out."
He smiled with pleasure, pleased to have solved the strange girl's riddle.
The two companions in the room watched in disbelief at the cleverness of the young man, who stood waiting for the answer from the hostess of the quest.
She showed him the check, to which Jhon smiled with great joy.
And in front of him, she tore it in half, throwing it to the floor.
.....................
"... H-Hey, but... but in the notebook are the five cats."
The girl pulled out of the pocket of her school uniform coat some pictures, in total about four.
All of them of the same cheetah feline who posed in each photo wearing a beautiful pearl necklace with a sapphire in the middle.
Jhon stared at the photos, then searched the girl's expression for some response, to which she remained just as serious.
"These are... the four cats you were supposed to be looking for."
The boy's mind went blank, slumping in his seat slumping into it, trying to understand what had happened.
"Her name is Charlotte, she's... my cat..."
Jhon stood silently, watching her gather her hair as she kept a thoughtful expression, looking up at him with a slight smile.
Jhon was perplexed, picking up the pieces of his illusion that had just crumbled along with the check on the floor. His expression reflected a mixture of disbelief and confusion as the girl showed him the pictures of her cat that looked majestic with so much jewelry.
Trying to process what had happened, Jhon sank deeper into his seat, looking for an answer that was not forthcoming. The girl, keeping her cool gaze, clarified the situation, but her words couldn't help the emptiness that had taken hold of the young man.
<> The irony hit him like a bucket of cold water.
"It's not good for you to play with other people's hopes like that..." Jhon commented to her, getting up and trying to forget what had happened, despite the great discomfort he felt along with the look of the two companions behind the girl.
The girl herself looked into Jhon's eyes, who found a curious emotion in this one.
"I am... Eleanor. Eleanor Banchior" she introduced herself, looking at Jhon "I wanted to... cut the distance between the two of us. I'm a... cat fanatic."
Jhon let out a long sigh and began to pick up the pieces of the check on the floor. Thinking, he realized how skilled she was at creating riddles and spotting small details like the drawing in her notebook even when she wasn't around when he noticed it.
She was a girl to be feared...if by any chance she found out he was hiding Molly in his house.
"My name is Jhon...I like cats too. But please don't do something like that again, my heart almost came out." having said that, she held the pieces of the torn check closer to him, "I can understand that you like cats as much as anyone...but you shouldn't overdo it like that."
Eleanor moved her hand closer to Jhon's, remaining with a cold stare again as she listened to his words.
Reaching out to take the broken pieces, her arm froze as everyone looked down at the floor at the girl's feet, where not just dozens, but hundreds and hundreds of pictures of different cats were falling from her uniform. Cats from all over the city.
The girl's forehead began to turn pale, and she ended up fainting on the floor.
Her two friends ran off to catch her and collect all the pictures immediately, while trying to wake her up.
***
Jhon and Eleanor were staring into each other's eyes, as she was still pale and shaking a little.
"Easy, easy... I didn't see anything. I assure you." commented Jhon, trying to calm her down.
However, he is about to faint again. Fortunately, he managed to stay on his feet and shook his head.
"Eleanor!"
She turned to look at him, this time with her hands in her pockets, where her friends had kept the pictures for her. She seemed determined not to drop them again, as if those pictures were her most valuable treasure.
Jhon understood that Eleanor was going through a complicated time and tried to be kind and understanding.
"We all have our secrets, Eleanor. Don't worry, I won't say anything. And... take good care of Charlotte," he added.
Eleanor nodded, still visibly worried.
"I'm sorry," she whispered with a hint of regret in her tone. "It won't happen again."
Jhon shook his head to the side, and took one of her hands with both of his, causing her to look up.
"I'm new here too, but unlike you, I don't have such good friends to support me in my moments of crisis. If they don't tease you about your... uhmm... excessive, taste in cats, then I'm sure no one will. Besides..."
Jhon pulled a picture of Molly out of his backpack when she was a little kitten, and thought his words through....
"I also have me... someone very special to me. And I always bring her picture with me everywhere too. So it's only natural, see?"
Hearing his words. Eleanor's eyes took on a unique glow, causing her to recoil and bring her hand to her mouth, changing her pallor to a blush of excitement.
Jhon smiled at her and held the photo up to her, watching as she took it and totally changed her gaze when it came to cats, noticing her gentle and adorable side of the girl who had presented herself as cold as ice.
"...It's...very cute" she commented softly, handing the photo back to him.
They both stared and smiled at each other, this time she stopped holding her pockets full of photos.
However, at the hint of the other classmates beginning to arrive, they quickly went to their seats, and resumed their silence, as Jhon resumes his notes. But, with Eleanor watching him....
