In the Legionnaire Stage, all astral warriors needed to grow stronger was to cultivate, increase the astral energy in their sea of consciousness while using it to increase the physical power of their body.
For mages, they also start developing their affinities alongside it.
In the Knight Stage for warriors, apart from strengthening their bodies even further, they also learn to develop their affinities and manipulate it marginally through their weapons.
For mages, it was more complicated.
To attain the Sage Stage, mages sign a pact with astral energy, selling their energy in exchange for a closer relationship with the energy of this world.
It was akin to the phrase 'selling your soul to the devil'.
After attaining sage state, the energy manipulation abilities of mages increase exponentially, far dwarfing that of warriors.
