As Joon-ho exited the virtual training session, his mind buzzed with thoughts about his new team. The synergy between him and his childhood friend, Soo-jin, was seamless. Their years of playing together had forged an unspoken understanding, allowing them to coordinate without a word. They knew each other's strengths and weaknesses intimately, making them a formidable duo in any scenario.
Jin-kyong, too, was an easy fit into the team dynamic. She had been one of the first friends Joon-ho made when he joined NexaCorp Korea University. Their bond had grown strong over time, and they had already fought side by side in several matches. Her sharpshooting skills complemented his stealthy assassin style perfectly, creating a powerful combination of precision and surprise. With Soo-jin and Jin-kyong by his side, Joon-ho felt confident that a solid foundation was already in place for their team.
Then there was Baek-hyeon, the Mage. Despite his shaky performance under Min-jae's pressure, Joon-ho didn't see him as a lost cause. Baek-hyeon had shown flashes of brilliance during their skirmish, his spellcasting precise and powerful when he wasn't overwhelmed by anxiety. Joon-ho believed that with time, support, and the right environment, Baek-hyeon could overcome his insecurities and become a valuable asset to the team. After all, they still had some time to train and bond before the real competition began.
The real concern, however, was Min-jae. His egotistical nature loomed like a dark cloud over the team. Min-jae's belief that he was the strongest, the one who could dictate the flow of the game, was a potential recipe for disaster. A team needed cohesion, not a lone wolf who disregarded the others. Joon-ho knew that if Min-jae continued to act on his own, it would disrupt the team's synergy and make it impossible to function effectively.
Working around Min-jae's ego wasn't going to be easy. Sure, Joon-ho, Soo-jin, and Jin-kyong could try to adapt, finding ways to accommodate his behaviour, but that approach had its limits. A team needed to be unified in purpose and strategy, not tiptoeing around one player's inflated sense of self-worth.
Joon-ho found himself considering the idea of seeking advice from Hana and Kyu. They had been placed on a team with Tae-young, whose similar temperament to Min-jae made them veterans in dealing with such personalities. Tae-young was known for his solo playstyle, often overshadowing his teammates with his overwhelming presence. Yet, Hana and Kyu somehow managed to work with him, creating a functional team dynamic.
Perhaps, Joon-ho thought, he could learn from their experience. Hana's ability to sustain and complement Tae-young's aggressive playstyle could offer insights into how to navigate around Min-jae's dominating presence. And Kyu, the enigmatic all-rounder, might have strategies or advice on how to integrate such a strong personality into a cohesive team effort.
The situation wasn't without hope, but it required careful handling. Joon-ho knew that leadership in this team didn't just come from skill, but from understanding the people he was playing with. Min-jae's strength as the third-best Tank in Korea was undeniable, but without a change in attitude, his presence could end up being more of a hindrance than a help.
As the next few days of training approached, Joon-ho resolved to keep an open mind and to seek out the advice and strategies needed to bring their team together. He understood that NexaRealm wasn't just a game of skill, but also of teamwork and understanding the dynamics of human behavior. And if they were going to make it through the trials ahead, they would need to learn to function as a true team—Min-jae included.
The next day, Joon-ho and his team reconvened in their designated training room. The atmosphere was tense but determined. They knew that with the clock ticking down to the World NexaRealm Championship, every moment of training was crucial.
"Alright," Joon-ho began, trying to break the ice as they settled into their virtual gear. "Let's see how we work together as a team this time. No free-for-all, just straight-up teamwork."
"Just don't slow me down," Min-jae scoffed, cracking his knuckles.
Soo-jin shot Joon-ho a glance that said it all—this was going to be tough. But she nodded, ready to give it her best.
"We'll focus on our roles and make sure we're covering each other."
"I'll keep the pressure on from a distance. Joon-ho, make sure you're feeding me info on their positions," Jin-kyong adjusted her headset, her eyes sharp with focus.
"I'll do my best to support with spells. Just… let me know if you need anything," Baek-hyeon looked a little hesitant but nodded, gripping his staff tightly.
The team logged into NexaRealm and hopped into a casual team deathmatch. Against random players from the entirety of South Korea. And so they found themselves in a dense jungle map, filled with towering trees, narrow paths, and plenty of cover for ambushes. It was an ideal setting for Joon-ho's Assassin role, but it also required tight coordination to avoid getting picked off one by one.
As they moved out, the first few minutes went smoothly. Joon-ho scouted ahead, using his stealth to pinpoint enemy locations, while Jin-kyong provided suppressing fire from a vantage point. Soo-jin stuck close to Baek-hyeon, ready to protect him as he unleashed his magic, while Min-jae took point, charging ahead with a confidence that bordered on recklessness.
The first encounter with an enemy team went well. They executed a textbook ambush, catching the opposition off-guard and taking them down with minimal damage. For a moment, it seemed like things were finally clicking.
But then, the cracks started to show.
As they pressed further into enemy territory, they encountered a well-coordinated group of opponents who pushed back hard. Min-jae, eager to prove his dominance, ignored Joon-ho's call to regroup and charged in alone, his shield absorbing the initial burst of attacks. The rest of the team scrambled to back him up, but the enemy quickly capitalized on the split formation.
"Min-jae, fall back!" Joon-ho shouted into the comms, his voice edged with frustration.
"I've got this!" Min-jae shot back, continuing to push forward.
The enemy team baited him deeper into the jungle, and before they knew it, they were surrounded. Soo-jin tried to pull Min-jae back, but he ignored her, focusing on his attack. Baek-hyeon, caught in the chaos, started to panic. His spells became erratic, missing their marks, and he quickly found himself isolated and overwhelmed.
Jin-kyong did her best to provide cover fire, but with the team so spread out, she was forced to retreat, leaving Joon-ho and Soo-jin to fend for themselves.
As the battle raged on, it became clear that Min-jae's refusal to work with the team was costing them dearly. One by one, they were picked off until only Min-jae remained, still stubbornly fighting against the inevitable.
When the match finally ended, their defeat was clear. The team respawned in the training room, the virtual battlefield fading away. Silence hung in the air, thick with tension and frustration.
Joon-ho sighed, pulling off his headset. "We need to talk about this."
"Talk about what?" Min-jae demanded, crossing his arms. "I was doing fine. If you all had just kept up, we could have won that."
"Kept up? You left us behind! We're supposed to be working as a team, not following you into every bad decision!" Soo-jin, never one to hold back, rounded on him.
"You can't win if you're not willing to take risks," Min-jae's eyes narrowed, his posture growing more defensive.
"Risks are fine," Jin-kyong interjected calmly, though her voice held a hard edge. "But what you did wasn't taking a risk—it was reckless. You didn't listen, and it cost us the match."
Baek-hyeon, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up, his voice trembling slightly.
"I… I couldn't keep up. I'm sorry, I just—"
"It's not your fault, Baek-hyeon," Joon-ho said, cutting him off gently. "This isn't about individual performance. It's about how we function as a team."
"So what's your brilliant plan, then?" Min-jae let out an exasperated sigh.
"We need to start trusting each other and following a strategy," Joon-ho replied. "No more lone wolf tactics. If we're going to make this work, we all need to be on the same page."
"Fine. I'll try it your way. But don't blame me if it doesn't work," Min-jae looked like he wanted to argue, but after a moment, he reluctantly nodded.
Joon-ho nodded, though he knew it would take more than just one agreement to change Min-jae's ways. This was going to be a long process, but he was determined to see it through. They were too close to the World NexaRealm Championship to let internal conflicts tear them apart now.
"Let's go again," Joon-ho said, putting his headset back on. "And this time, let's make sure we're moving as one."
The team, though still fraught with tension, nodded in agreement and readied themselves for another round. Joon-ho knew that it would take time to smooth out their differences, but as they loaded back into the game, he felt a renewed sense of determination.
They couldn't afford to let egos and insecurities get in the way of their shared goal. With each match, they would learn more about each other, build trust, and, hopefully, forge the synergy needed to become a true force in the World NexaRealm Championship. This was only the beginning, and Joon-ho was ready to lead them through it.
