Gangsters normally performed a "probing" phase simply using their presence and mannerisms to see who among the crowd was more susceptible to exploitation to be set as a target, and such indicators were fear, apprehension, the individual's physique, and their lack of company.
Lenny's current physique and lack of company might put him on their radar, but he was taller than average now and was charming too, giving any deliberating assailant who was shorter and less charming a defeated mentality. And because of that, they might just not engage.
