The first morning rays woke Natalie up too early on a weekend. She could feel Alonso's warmth at her back and hear the peaceful sounds of his sleep beside her. Her throat was dry so she glanced around and saw the empty water pitcher on her bedside table.
I'm so thirsty. she thought. Deciding to get some water, she got up as quietly as possible, draped a shawl around herself and left the room.
Hearing peculiar noises from downstairs, she opted to follow them instead of going to the kitchen. The sounds were coming from one of the guest rooms on the first floor now transformed into the emergency room her father-in-law had mentioned. Standing at the threshold, her eyes scanned the movable bed, a table with wheels, and a couple of machines she had no clue about. But what particularly drew her attention was something tucked away in the corner of the room.
