Chapter 14 - A Tough Decision...

The carriage, now halted on the lonely road, became a stage between father and daughter. Rowena, still astride the horse, met her father's gaze with unwavering determination. The winds whispered through the surrounding trees, carrying with them the weight of the choices that now hung in the air.

Her father, a man of authority and responsibility, finally broke the silence that stretched between them like an unspoken chasm.

"Rowena, you must understand. The darkness that has consumed our town is far beyond our control. We cannot jeopardize our lives or our lineage for a place lost to the malevolence of dark corruption" He spoke with a stern yet pained tone.

Rowena's gaze, filled with a sense of duty and guilt met her father's eyes. "Father, I understand but these are our people. We cannot simply abandon them. What if there's a way to help. A way to fight against this horrible darkness?"

Her father, torn between protecting his family and understanding of his daughter's plea, sighed deeply. "Rowena, I truly do not wish to forsake our people, but... But we must prioritize our family. Our safety is paramount for our line to carry on."

The new wife, seated in the carriage, listened with a guarded expression. The conflict etched on her face mirrored the struggle within the family. It was a defining moment, a fracture in the bond that had held them all together.

Just before the carriage resumed its journey, Rowena's father, a hint of regret in his aged blue eyes, leaned down to speak to her.

"Rowena, we are heading to a refuge in the mountains, a place far from the reach of this darkness. If you choose to stay and find a way to help our town, meet us there if you can. But, above all, please... Please, my precious daughter, be safe." He implored, the weight of a father's concern evident in his words as he brushed his hand on Rowena's cheek. "Here take my sword... I hope it can be of help and it protects you well..."

"Oh father.... Thank you! I will take good care of it!" Rowena smiled and pressed her forehead against her fathers. With a loving smile on his face he receded back into his seat and signaled for the carriage to continue its journey. The wheels creaked back to life, and the horses resumed their steady pace, leaving Rowena on the deserted road, a lone figure in the fading daylight.

As the carriage disappeared around a bend, Rowena stood there, the weight of her decision and her father's parting words settling upon her shoulders. In the gathering dusk, Rowena contemplated her next steps, determined to navigate the ever growing shadows and find a way back to the town that still echoed with the cries of those in desperate need.
