Chapter 16 - The heart that belongs to the devil

'The law which you are so proud of is flawed.'

Jia thought about Mingshen's words as she laid on her back on her bouncy bed at home. She wanted to refute them but meeting Wenqian and feeling her deep resentment for anybody outside Huayuan erupted a sense of unease in her heart.

She rolled to her left side, and her gaze fell on a picture frame on the table which was kept frontside down.

Jia lowered her eyelashes, a wry smile curving her lips.

'The law is flawed.'

He might not be wrong after all…

She closed her eyes, not knowing when she fell asleep.

"Superintendent Song Jia, can I please know why you got involved with the case when I clearly gave you instructions for otherwise?"

Jia and Huojin stood before Commissioner Zhong Kai, who was clearly displeased by their interference in the case.

Her chief Supervisor Tang Haitao was present as well. He smiled and glanced at Huojin. "I heard your mother's birthday is coming. Did you buy a gift for her?"

"I did. Jia helped me a lot."

She smiled. "And I thank God for that."

"How is this conversation relevant here?" Zhong Kai asked.

"Because Mo Huojin happened to be in the area buying a gift for his mother. I suppose he might not have a good sense so Song Jia accompanied him."

Jia and Huojin didn't show any expressions but inwardly, they were surprised with their boss's support and gave him a thumbs up.

"And they happened to find Danya along the way?"

"With what I heard from them, it's indeed so."

"And they were not tracking the kidnappers van at all?"

"Officer Xiyang already stopped working on it upon your orders."

"How convenient is it that they found the little girl whose case they were working on just a few hours ago?"

Tang Haitao smiled. "Maybe fate wanted them to save the little girl. They were off duty anyway. It isn't wrong for civilians to try to help other civilians, right?"

Zhong Kai stared at him and sighed. "Don't think that I don't understand what you are trying to pull off here."

"I am clueless, Commissioner."

"This play with words won't be tolerated next time. I will excuse this time since Song Jia and Mo Huojin have been excellent officers. Song Jia, especially, has shown tremendous growth and dedication since her coma. So, I will let this go but only this once. For the sake of peace, the agreement should remain as it is. Please leave now, you stubborn mules," he snorted.

Outside, Jia cleared her throat and said, "Sir, We really appreciate what you did for us."

Tang Haitao smiled. "What did I do? My officers were simply off duty."

Jia chuckled.

He still isn't letting his guard down.

Jia and Huojin bowed. "Thank you once again!"

Huojin said, "We will go back to our posts."

"Ah wait a minute. Before you two leave, there is someone I want you to meet."

Jia asked, "Who is it, Sir?"

Tang Haitao had a troubled and helpless expression. "Well, you already know him very well. You definitely won't welcome his presence but from now on, he is going to assist you in your cases with respect to forensic and medical investigations. He is-"

"Spicyyyyyyyy~! I am here!"

Jia froze upon recognizing a certain dreaded voice. She eyed her supervisor, demanding answers with her gaze, but he simply looked away.

"Sir, what is this?"

Mingshen arrived with a swag and smiled. "Behold Spicy! This is the good news I have been wanting to give you. We will be partners from now on! Are you happy? Are you happy? You must definitely be dancing with joy~"

"..."

"I will follow wherever my research subject will be~"

Huojin's mouth twitched.

But Jia was in a state of horror. "Sir Tang, please tell me that is just a bad dream I am having right now."

"I am sure you mean your loveliest dream, Spicy~" Mingshen sparkled.

Tang Haitao sighed. "It is what it is. Yang Mingshen will be working with us on the cases in his professional capacity from now on. I hope you two build a great cooperation."

"I would rather retire, Sir," She smiled.

He coughed.

"Why is this happening?"

"Our head forensic expert went on paternity leave. His wife is in the last month of her pregnancy. Naturally, we need someone to take his place."

Jia shut her eyes.

How could I forget his wife's pregnancy?

She then narrowed her eyes and stood before Mingshen, facing him eye to eye as she folded her arms. "What evil plans are you cooking in your devilish mind, Yang Mingshen? Spill it out."

"Hmmmmmm first of all, I am super bored! Hanging out with you fun so having a partnership is for my benefit~"

"Did you perhaps consider that I don't return your sentiments?"

He smiled back. "Perhaps you already know that I always do as I please irrespective of whether my sentiments are returned or not."

"This is police headquarters, not a playground."

"And Yang Mingshen is rich enough, influential enough and powerful enough to turn anything into one."

Her gaze looked chilly.

Mingshen lazily continued. "Secondly, I would like to welcome you back to my lab once again as a good old organ donor as you always were back in the days~"

"I was never your organ donor."

"I will make you one," his eyes twinkled. "For that to happen, I will just have to teensy tiny bit kill you, that's all~"

Tang Haitao said, "He is joking, Jia."

"You never know."

Jia cocked her brow in amusement. "You will kill me?"

He tilted his head. "If I can save you, I can kill you too."

"That was when I was at my death's door. I couldn't fight you then but don't be mistaken that you can take me down now. I am not a patient Song Jia anymore. You try to grab my neck and I will break your wrist."

Mingshen leaned in, devilishly chuckling. "And I told you before, Spicy. I have saved your life. I have touched your heart quite literally. So that heart beating in your chest right now belongs to Yang Mingshen. If I want it, I will have it."
