Chapter 61 - A Soft Bed

My throat constricts as the meaning of his look sinks in.

Does he think I'm that kind of person?

Am I, in fact, that kind of person?

...No.

Even if I were, even a selfish coward would stay the course. Only a fool would leave this hapless idiot to his own devices.

I swallow hard. "I signed on to do a job for you, and that job hasn't finished. I'm not abandoning it now. Don't worry."

He smiles a bit. "I appreciate that. Truly."

He presses his lips into a flat line only a moment later. "Although, given the circumstances, it is unfair to keep you in a position that constantly puts you in harm's way. Perhaps I-"

"I chose this job," I remind him. "The danger doesn't matter."

He closes his mouth, from where it'd been left open mid-word when I interrupted him, and hums. "Regardless, I find myself concerned."

"Don't be such a pain in the ass, then."

Lucas barks a laugh, as though taken off guard.
