May yawns widely as she snuggles into my side. "Auntie Diane, I'm sleepy..." she mumbles into my shoulder. "Is it okay if I close my eyes? Just for a minute? I wanna make sure the nightmare doesn't come back..."
I smile and kiss the top of her head. "Of course. You know what you can do if they do come back, though?"
May shifts, gazing at me expectantly, eyes wide.
I tap her cheek with a fingertip.
"If you realize you're having a bad dream just say 'Auntie Diane, Big Sis Celeste, and Grampa Roland come and scare the bad dream away!' and we'll appear in your dream and beat up whatever it is that's scaring you."
"Really?! You can do that?" May sounds completely taken aback and in awe, staring up at me as if she was unable to comprehend how on earth I was able to do something like that.
"I'm a mercenary. If I can't beat a mere bad dream, who'll hire me to get rid of their enemies?"
