Cape May's voodoo tree of Higbees beach. Higbee's beach used to be a nude beach all the way until the 90's (some still go nude). Sometime in June of 2003 myself and a group of friends went out to Higbee's to do some ghost hunting. Some myths surrounding the beach range from, phantom ships, to an apparition wearing captains clothes standing on the dunes. Our experience started while walking toward the voodoo tree to see if anything creepy would happen. All the locals know exactly where the tree is and can easily get to it. However this particular night we were having trouble locating the tree (which is extremely odd because it is on the shore line and is easily found). While walking we would occasionally hear stick cracking in the woods to our left (coyotes are known to dwell there, so that was our thought at first). As we reached a section of higbees where the jetties were we decided to turn back, because we knew we went too far from where the tree would have been. When we turned around we saw a pale figure squatting down, looking standing next to 2 large pieces of drift wood. We called out to the figure hoping it was an actual person. Instead the figure stood up and walked into the tree. That tree was the voodoo tree, how we missed it I'll never know, but that was my first encounter with the infamous voodoo tree.
Thank you for the acceptance of joining the group. I am from Cape May, NJ, one of the oldest tourist towns in America. New Jersey is full of myths and legends, as well as creepy experiences. So much so, there is a magazine dedicated to the phenomenons (weird NJ).
