Chapter 1 - The beginning of the end

It happened about fifteen years ago. The day the world as we knew it came to an end. However, I never got to experience life before the end so we aren't concerned about that. My names Kaiyo, I'm nineteen years old. I was pretty young when it happened so I don't remember much. I do have stories my family told me about before they died. Apparently, it was just another regular day. Everybody was doing their own thing and living their lives. Out of nowhere, the sky had turned a deep red. There were these rifts that appeared among the clouds. These alien type creatures began to crawl their way out of them. It wasn't long before the population started to quickly decline. We had reached thirty percent of Earth's original population before the drug Exceed was invented. Exceed was a drug that granted the user abilities. However, overusing the drug, or pushing your body too far, always resulted in death. There were human trials conducted to figure out which DNA structures the drug would best connect with. Honestly, there weren't that many subjects that the drug didn't bond with. Although, the ones that it didn't bond with, they melted into a puddle of their own flesh. It was a dangerous risk, sure, but we didn't have time to waste. We needed some way to combat the aliens. For the most part, the people that successfully bonded did as intended. However, there were still the few that felt above the law. That felt the urge to be stronger. People had somehow managed to get their hands on Exceed illegally and started charging people for them, meaning anybody could get Exceed as long as they had the money. That ended up dividing a lot people to join with the deserters, and others to join the fight for good. Though wars never lead to anything good. The division of humanity led to another five percent decrease in the population. The population of humanity continues to decrease while the population of monsters increase by the day. Anyway, that's the backstory of how we got to me, time to get into the story.

I'd been with a group of five for a few months now. I was in a group with a few friends as my parents had died two years ago. They were killed in an attempt to save me. I'll never forget their faces as I watched then take their last breath.

We'd found a school that still had a decent amount of medical supplies and a decent foundation for defense. We strengthened the gate around the school and boarded the windows. It wasn't much, but it was what we had to call home.
