The flight attendant came and gently shook her shoulder. "Ma'am, ma'am I need your help!"
SooYun pulled her sleep mask up and sat up. "What's wrong?"
"Mr. Grisham is ill," the attendant whispered, "His phone keeps ringing, but he doesn't seem to hear it at all."
SooYun got up and went over to where Warren was sleeping. His phone buzzed and she reached over his inert body and answered it. "Hello?"
"Thank God someone's answered!" came the panicked woman's voice. "I'm his sister, Grace. His insulin alarm went off more than an hour ago, I think he's topped out and needs his shot!"
"Where does he keep his supplies?" SooYun asked. "He's not responding."
"In his backpack," Grace said. "There's a red medical bag with all his supplies in it. He had his insulin pump removed for the trip, but he can't give himself the shots. Is he in shock?"
SooYun looked over at the flight attendant, "Do you think there's a doctor on board? I'll do what I can, but a doctor needs to check him out once he wakes up."
"I will check the manifest," the attendant said and rushed off. SooYun opened Warren's backpack and immediately found the red medical kit. She pulled the Velcro strap free and unrolled the kit. She took the phone and pressed the speaker. "Grace, you're on speakerphone, I see the tester." She loaded the test strip into the blood tester and pulled the trigger on the finger sticker. As soon as the bead of blood welled up she pressed the test strip to catch the sample. "It's 359. How many cc's should I give him?"
"He's never needed more than 10," Grace said, "Do 10."
The insulin pen had a twist mechanism that delivered the exact amount to inject. SooYun took an alcohol pad and tore open the packet. She pulled back the duvet and lifted Warren's shirt up to expose his stomach. She laid three fingers just above his belly button and quickly swabbed the alcohol pad over the skin, then pinched the skin and injected the insulin. The pen clicked when the amount had been injected. She swabbed the area again and pulled his shirt down.
Within minutes Warren began to stir. "Warren? Warren, it's SooYun! Can you hear me?" He rolled his head toward her, "You look really pretty with your hair down!"
"Warren do you know where you are? Do you understand what I'm saying?" She asked.
Warren nodded slowly then reached up and patted her shoulder, "It's okay, I hear you, loud and clear, Reb."
SooYun picked up his phone and took it off speaker, "Grace, he's coming around."
Warren frowned and took the phone from SooYun, "Grace? Yeah, I'm okay. I'll call you back later." He hung up the phone and tossed it on the bed mat. "What happened?"
"You topped out and the alarm on your phone went off. The flight attendant didn't know what to do, so she woke me up and I answered the call from your sister."
"Did you give me my shot, Reb?"
"I did."
"Thanks." He muttered then ran his hands over his arms. "Where?"
"Just above your belly button," SooYun answered and frowned back at him when he grinned suggestively at her. "It's something I can't unsee – it's burned forever in my mind. I'll probably need therapy!"
Warren scoffed at her then threw her a sly look, "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me!"
SooYun laughed and got to her feet, "Shut up, Benjamin!"
The attendant returned with a bedraggled man carrying a canvas satchel. "I'm a physician, let's check you over and get you settled again."
SooYun told him briefly what had happened, and the amount of insulin given. The physician nodded. "We'll recheck the blood sugar and see how that 10cc's worked."
She looked down at Warren, "Call or text your sister, she's waiting to hear from you." She went back to her cubicle and tried to settle down again. She listened as the doctor and Warren talked, and then everything returned to normal. The doctor stopped by her cubicle and handed her a piece of notepaper. "I spoke to his sister, and this is her contact information, she wanted you to have it – just in case. I'll come by later before we land, and make sure he's still stable."
She took the paper. "Thank you for coming so quickly, doctor." He nodded and went up the spiral staircase between the first-class section and the galley. She grabbed her phone and programmed the information into her phone contacts list put her sleep mask on and rolled to her side. Within a few minutes, she was sound asleep.
