Chapter 12: Demons and Madness IV

The sound that Reed's device emitted reverberated throughout Limbo, like a powerful shockwave that resonated not only in the air, but also in the very fabric of reality around them. Aleis felt the energy vectors around her fluctuate violently, as if the very structure of Limbo was losing its cohesion. The shadows that enveloped Madelyne Pryor began to tremble in an unsettling way, their edges becoming unstable, and for the first time, her mocking smile faded, revealing a hint of despair.
"What have you done?" the queen of Limbo growled, her voice filled with fury and bewilderment, as if she were trying to decipher an enigma that had turned against her.
Reed, swaying but firm in his stance, held the device as its screen glowed with a flickering, almost frantic light. A series of complex equations and energy patterns were displayed on it, indicating that the plan had begun to work, though the outcome was still uncertain. The tension in the air was palpable, and the oppressive atmosphere of Limbo seemed to vibrate with the same anxiety that the three of them felt.
"This… is nothing more than… a temporary alteration…" Reed said, panting as he struggled to maintain his concentration, "but for a few moments… it will cut you off from Limbo's full control."
The mutant didn't waste a second in assessing the situation. Taking advantage of the redhead's momentary distraction, he channeled the remaining energy in his body, feeling the suit amplify every pulse of his vector power emanating from his being. The white lines that ran through his suit glowed brightly, shining like beacons in the gloom. The dimension's vectors, now less affected by Madelyne's direct influence, began to respond to her control again, as if they felt themselves released from an invisible chain.
The woman screamed in rage, raising her hands in a desperate gesture to regain control over Limbo. Columns of fire and darkness surged around her, attempting to crush Reed and Susan in a last-ditch effort to maintain her hold. But Aleis was ready, prepared for any eventuality. With a cry of effort, she stretched her hands forward and deflected the force vectors, directing the attacks of the approaching demonic creatures in hordes towards her own allies, like a puppet master taking the reins of his show.
"Aleis, now!" shouted Susan, who had gathered enough energy to project a new force field, this time intended to contain the evil sorceress for an instant and give Aleis the opportunity she so desperately needed.
The invisible woman's glowing shield surrounded the queen, momentarily trapping her in a bubble of energy. The sorceress struggled against the barrier, her dark power unleashing in waves of pure energy, like an erupting volcano, but the distortion created by Reed's device had affected her capabilities. She was trapped, at least for now, but Aleis knew they couldn't relax; this might be their only chance to finish her off once and for all.
"I can't hold her for long!" Susan screamed, her voice filled with effort and pain, her eyes reflecting the intensity of the struggle. "Do something, Aleis!"
The albino knew this was his only chance, his last card in this desperate game. With the vectors under his control again, he channeled all his strength into Madelyne, directing every particle of energy he could muster towards her. His goal wasn't to simply hurt her, but to disrupt the flow of energy she used to manipulate Limbo, a monumental task in itself.
"You won't escape this time!" —the albino shouted, launching a massive wave of chaos energy redirected directly towards Madelyne.
The impact was devastating. The energy of the attack completely pierced Susan's shield and engulfed Madelyne, creating a vortex that tore at her connection to Limbo. Reality itself seemed to distort around her as her grip on the dimension weakened. The dark skies, which had once seemed so firm, began to collapse, as if Limbo itself was crumbling under the weight of her power.
"This can't be!" Madelyne roared, her body shaking as she tried to resist the attack. "I am the Queen of Limbo! You cannot defeat me!"
But her voice was drowned out by the chaos surrounding her. The energy vortex Aleis had created was unstoppable, and Madelyne, despite her immense power, could not hold control of the dimension for much longer. His body distorted, his figure flickering between reality and chaos, and his screams became increasingly inhuman, echoing like an echo of his own despair.
The former X-Man gritted his teeth in determination, keeping the flow of energy constant, not giving in one iota to the pressure. He felt exhaustion taking over his body, every fiber of his being screaming for a break, but he couldn't stop now. He knew it all depended on this moment, on his unwavering will. The energy of Limbo resonated through him, channeling into his suit, and he held on tightly to every shred of power he could control, like a sailor in the midst of a storm who couldn't allow himself to be carried away by the waves.
"No!" Madelyne screamed, one last burst of dark energy emanating from her body, but it was in vain, as if her efforts were simply the howling of a storm that had already lost its way.
With a final burst of light and energy, Madelyne Pryor vanished, consumed by her own hubris. The Queen of Limbo, the powerful sorceress who had threatened to destroy reality itself, vanished into a vortex of chaos and shadow, leaving behind a void that reverberated with the echo of her maniacal laughter.
Limbo, bereft of its ruler, began to crumble around her. Towers of flesh collapsed in a grotesque spectacle, the black sky split into fissures of blinding light that flashed like dying stars, and the demonic creatures that had invaded the place disintegrated into ash, like cinders carried by the wind, disappearing without a trace.
The albino fell to his knees, exhausted and nearly out of breath. The power he had channeled had brought him to the edge of his limits, but he had done it. Madelyne had been defeated, and with her, the chaos she had brought to the world.
"Did we do it?" "Susan asked, her voice barely audible, as she staggered over to Aleis, her expression reflecting the mix of relief and exhaustion they both felt.
Reed, though wounded and reeling in his own fatigue, slowly stood up, his device still glowing dimly in his hands, like a beacon of hope amidst the darkness.
"Yes…" Reed said, watching as Limbo began to collapse in on itself, the distortions of reality flickering around them. "But we have to get out of here before this dimension closes in completely."
The young man nodded, still catching his breath, feeling the burn in his muscles and the pressure in his mind. Susan offered him a hand, and with her help, he stood up, though his strength seemed to be deserting him.
"Come on," Susan said, her tone urgent. "We don't have much time."
The urgency in her voice was clear. The pressure of time felt like an oppressive shadow over them, reminding them that although they had won one battle, the war was far from over.
Together, the three heroes rushed towards the portal that had brought them to Limbo, their footsteps echoing on the distorted ground, as the walls of the dimension rapidly closed in around them. They could feel reality itself beginning to compress, as if Limbo were being swallowed by an infinite void, an abyss that threatened to devour them all.
When they finally crossed the threshold of the portal, they felt a tremendous jolt, as if they were being dragged through a tunnel of pure energy. Limbo collapsed completely behind them, disappearing in a silent explosion of light and darkness, like a dream fading upon awakening.

Aleis fell to her knees in the hall of Baxter Tower, feeling the firm ground beneath her hands. The air on Earth was thinner, cleaner, but he was exhausted, drained of energy and vitality. Reed and Susan also collapsed around him, both wounded, but alive, sharing the same relief and confusion.
The silence in the room was overwhelming. There were no demonic noises, no fire, no chaos. Only the sound of their labored breathing and the low hum of the machines of Baxter Tower, which seemed to mark the pulse of a world that, although still in danger, had managed to survive one of its greatest tests.
"We did it…" Aleis said finally, looking up at Susan and Reed, his voice full of disbelief and wonder. "We did it."
Susan nodded, her eyes shining with exhaustion but also with deep relief, a reflection of what this victory had cost.
"Yes…" she murmured. "But… at what cost?"
The future remained uncertain, but one thing was clear: they had faced hell and, somehow, survived. The battle had been fierce, and though they had emerged victorious, the cost of that victory might be higher than any of them were willing to accept.
Peace was a luxury they had to earn, and they knew they had to prepare for what was to come, for in the shadow of triumph, new threats always lurk, ready to claim what was once theirs.
