Chapter 69 - Intelligence Over 9000

--- Akira ---

After gathering information about the one pulling the strings, I couldn't help but let out a sigh.

'So, it's really him.'

Fenrir.

His strength is rumored to be among the top tiers of the Cult. That means his Magical Power and overall strength far surpass anyone I've encountered so far.

And, most importantly, he's the first immortal I'll ever face.

Can I handle him?

Well, even if things take a turn for the worst and I end up defeated, there's always an escape plan.

But, understanding the level of one of the pillars of the Cult is crucial for me.

Besides, I've never experienced or witnessed what could be considered a high-level fight personally.

I have so many abilities waiting to be put to the test.

It couldn't be compared to the First Trial.

Despite my Combat Prowess being labeled as [Low], I don't believe it accurately reflects the level of opponents I can handle at the moment...

Fortunately, it seems I've been brought right to Fenrir's doorstep. His plan is likely to conduct more experiments using royal blood, and if that adds significantly to the Cult, he might even get a promotion from the 5th to the 4th seat.

Well, that's a dream I'm determined to shatter now.

Gathering a few more details, I eventually arrived at Fenrir's private quarters.

Given my snooping activities, I had, of course, changed from my charming crossdress to the attire of a Cult member I'd killed earlier.

I was intrigued to test if my [Mirage Veil] could still hold up against a formidable foe.

With that in mind, I gave the door a knock.

"...Fenrir-sama, may I have a moment of your time?"

"Enter"

A childish voice greeted me, belonging to a young boy.

I steeled myself, but disgust still clawed at me as I opened the door.

There stood a boy with striking silvery white hair, dressed in a dark, long-sleeved shirt with a high collar and a zipper on the front.

Over the shirt, he wore a light, sleeveless vest adorned with a fur-lined hood and a belt cinched at the waist.

His dark pants featured patches and straps adorning the legs, while his hands were covered by gloves with spikes on the knuckles. Around his neck, concealed beneath the collar of his shirt, hung a pendant resembling a wolf's head.

He looked edgy as fuck.

The seemingly innocent child, kicking his legs on the chair while reading some report in boredom, was, in reality, a 500+ year-old geezer with a penchant for massacring people.

An urge surged within me, compelling me to unsheathe my blade and end this monstrosity. The act of feigning a child's demeanor grated on my nerves, but I restrained myself.

My theories took precedence over playing the hero. There would always be another opportunity to confront and eliminate him.

"...So, how is that kidnapped bitch? You made sure she's still alive, right?"

He didn't even bother to glance my way as he spoke, but I could feel a few veins popping on my forehead.

How dare you.

I couldn't test my [Mirage Veil] if he refused to acknowledge my presence, which is why I restrained my frustration.

"She's alive. You do not have to worry about that, Fenrir-sama. Actually..."

You should worry about yourself.

I proceeded to feed him some random bullshit, but he remained fixated on that dumb report.

Come on dude, are you doing this on purpose?

Feeling my patience wearing thin, I opted for the most convincing lie that would surely capture his attention.

"Actually, sir. The reason I rushed in here is because there's an intruder on the loose!"

Finally, my words seemed to have an impact, as he glanced up to meet my gaze.

Will my [Magic Veil] hold up?

"...Where is the intruder!? Why did you not tell me sooner? Useless subordinates!"

He tossed aside the reports, eager to dash out the door, not sparing me another glance...

I facepalmed.

And you're the 5th seat of Rounds? How has the Cult even achieved shit so far? Your ancestors would be rolling in their graves, dumbass.

Since the time for testing was over...

Why not try to harm him directly instead?

With such musings, I sneakily conjured a sword made of slime jelly and with a quick flick of my wrist, I hurled it towards him, investing more or less 40% of my physical strength into the throw.

As expected, he recognized the threat to his back and immediately went on high alert, narrowly dodging it before it collided with the door.

Well, to be more precise, it pierced through it, then the wall, and the wall beyond that...

With each impact, the sword left behind a trail of destruction, its passage marked by the splintering of wood and the crumbling of brick....

Yeah, I'm not getting that sword back.

The drawbacks of my Magical Power always seem to hit at the worst times.

"You..."

Finally. Has my [Mirage Veil] been pierced after all?

"Are you a spy!?"

...Just go to sleep bro, it's better for both of us, I swear.

The mission this time was easy!

Just tail the baddies who snatched the princess, and kick into action when she's in a pinch!

Hehehe, even someone like me could easily do it. This meant...

I can snack all I want later!

I'm so excited, I almost ran off after Lady Alpha ordered me to go, but to maintain my appearance as second in command, I didn't hurry too much.

Once I arrived at the scene of the kidnapping, my nose led me straight to their hideout in no time.

And just like that, I was there.

A few shady guys were loitering outside.

Did Lady Alpha give me any specific instructions on how to handle this?

Hmm...

She did not!

Last time, I got a bit of a scolding for going all out instead of just keeping watch. Maybe if I just take out the folks who catch sight of me, it'll be all good... right?

Gotta hope for the best...

I really don't want another scolding...

Lady Alpha is scary when she's angry.

Thus, with a carefree style, I strolled right up to the front door.

"Who are you!?"

"How did you get here!?"

Oh... those guys spotted me!

Guess there's no point in keeping them around.

If I handle this the usual way, it might mess with my mission, but hey, I've become wiser!

Since they're just annoying pests, I'll whip out my sword and not bother with anything else.

I must say, I am quite smart!

This way, a quick slash, and those guys were out of my hair.

Now, I could stroll in and assess the situation.

Let's see... how was the girl I was supposed to find?

Girl...

Silver hair...

Her eyes...

Wait, what about her eyes...?

...No way! I got so wrapped up in the snacks that I totally forgot!

I couldn't help but tremble in fear.

What if I end up getting the wrong person and go against Lady Alpha's orders?

I thought about going back to double-check, but what if I forget all over again by the time I return?

It can't be that big of a deal... right?

Right!

She mentioned silver hair as the standout feature, so there's probably just one girl with that hair color here! I'll definitely figure out who I'm supposed to keep an eye on once I delve deeper into this place!

With this mindset, I continued making my way through the building...
