This is a small town with a population of less than ten thousand and it's less than two hundred miles from Changdu. It's also close to the Yushu region where the Folun Temple is located and Kangding is to its southeast.
In ancient times, the Great Ancestor and Emperor Taizong showed great foresight and ambition. When they pacified Qinghai-Tibet, they granted all the flourishing cities such as Lhasa, Yushu, Changdu, Kangding as fiefs to the Lama monasteries and provided a large amount of land and small cities for the local Tu Division.
The Duogansixing Zhihuishi Division is one such case, with its base situated in the inconspicuous Dege City.
Strictly speaking, this division was not first known as Zhihuishi Division. The whole Duogan region was initially set up as a Zhihuishi Division.
