Lukas wasn't sure of the rules of the game, he had seen it played before but he hadn't ever tried it himself. Kai kindly explained the rules to him as simply as he could. The rules weren't that complicated on their own, but rather the complexity and draw of the game came from using those rules effectively.
In short, each player had a unit referred to as a 'castle'. If the castle is ever destroyed, or if one player runs out of ways to destroy the enemy castle, that player loses. There was only one exception, if a player's castle was destroyed and they had a clear attack on the enemy's castle, they could destroy it, resulting in a draw.
There were around 15 other pieces, but only 4 types. They all served as either a way to destroy enemy pieces or defend one's own pieces.
