Chapter 52 - Lightning Fast Reflexes

Left in the dust, Lukas rushed after the trail left by Kai's dash. Lukas was not surprised by the level of power Kai had, and he knew his power was related to that of lightning. But to see someone transform part of their body into lightning was drastically different than what Lukas was expecting.

He didn't know the limits of such power, or what its drawback was beyond how taxing a power like that must be. Surely, Kai must face tremendous risk or struggle to use his power. If not, then he may very well be the strongest member of the Fortissimo.

Soon, as Lukas ran, he saw ahead of him flashes of light, and the sounds of trees cracking and snapping. He ran as fast as he could through the slick mud, it stuck to his feet and weighed them down like clay. But he couldn't continue to follow Kai, as lying on the ground was a man bleeding into the mud.

"What happened!? Are you okay!?"

The man was barely conscious, bordering on the precipice of death as he clutched his abdomen.

"I... the ghast came out of... nowhere..."

His breathing was heavy, and he winced and cried in pain. Though he tried to muffle his agony, it was too little effort.

"It... tore my... leg off... and my sto... stomach is..."

Lukas looked at the extent of the damages. The man's right leg was gone just above the knee, and he had fashioned a rough cloth tourniquet on his thigh. His abdomen was much harder to look at, but a ghastly gash ripped across his lower torso.

They weren't too far from Mistfell, but with the weather conditions and nearby threat, there was little hope the man would make it back if Lukas tried to take him.

"I'll try to bandage you up to the best of my ability, but I don't think I can take you back fast enough. I'll get Kai to take you back, or call for more help."

With that, Lukas carefully took the man to a drier part of the forest. As far away from the rain and mud as they could get in this storm. There, he took out his medical kit and began to wrap bandages around the man's stomach.

He wasn't trained to be a medic but was given the bare minimum for first aid treatment. He had a little knowledge of how to bandage someone, but not to the extent of someone in Vesa's subdivision.

He stuffed the wound with bandages to clog the bleeding and keep the man's organs in place. Then he used the rest of his bandages wrapping around the man's torso. It wasn't the best, but it stopped his bleeding and would hold for at least until he got back to Mistfell.

Now, he had to find Kai and tell him to get the man back to Mistfell. But Kai and the ghast were fighting at a lightning-fast pace, and it was difficult to even get close to the two. It took Lukas a few minutes of calling out to Kai for him to finally hear him.

"Kai, I need you to take this man back to Mistfell as fast as you can. I bandaged him up but he won't make it if I take him back."

Kai only responded with a nod. He picked the man up and held him carefully. The man was bigger than Kai, but Kai was not weak in the slightest and held the man with ease.

"Kil"

In an instant, Kai and the man were gone. Now all that was left, was the worst part of Lukas' plan. He had to get back to Mistfell alive, all the while a ghast as fast as Kai was chasing him.

He began to run back, constantly watching his surroundings for a surprise attack. He felt its presence stalking him and caught a glimpse every so often. Every time he stumbled, every time he was whipped by wind, he saw it.

It hadn't made its move, but it waited for the perfect opportunity, like a hunter. Its mind was simple, yet cruel. It hadn't seen Lukas fight, yet it knew his weak points.

That's why Lukas was caught off guard when it shot out from the rain, straight for his right side. It was over in an instant, in less than a second Lukas lost his right arm. The pain had yet to reach his brain by the time it hit the floor.
