Chapter 57 - Chapter 57: Heavy Casualties

Observing the multitude outside the door, engaged in fervent discussions on countermeasures.

This time, Zhang Yi was indifferent to precision. Since they sought his life, there was no need for courtesy. He wasn't a saint. He raised his crossbow and began shooting. Several individuals quickly fell victim to the arrows.

Only now did the outside crowd realize the potency of Zhang Yi's crossbow. "He's armed! Be cautious!" they cried, attempting to disperse. However, the corridor was too cramped for a large group to scatter effectively, causing a chaotic commotion.

Unperturbed, Zhang Yi remained focused on his task, disregarding the chaos. The whistling of the arrows resembled a deathly hymn, intensifying the fear. Panic ensued, and people scrambled towards the stairwell, but the confined space made escape impossible.

Amidst the panic, a collective stumble occurred, triggered by the urgency. Zhang Yi, undeterred, concentrated on his task. The neighbors, suffering due to his actions, discovered the shooting holes and decided to block them. Some attempted to throw objects into Zhang Yi's room.

Nonchalant, Zhang Yi swiftly closed and locked the iron door behind the shooting holes, rendering it impervious from the outside. In one stroke, he eliminated dozens of combatants.

Seeing Zhang Yi unable to shoot arrows anymore, the neighbors regained their composure. The aftermath revealed a scene of havoc, with some fatally wounded by arrows. Yet, their disdain deepened upon identifying the rusty tetanus-inflicting arrows.

Fury and curses were directed at Zhang Yi. "Zhang Yi, you wretched scoundrel! You're despicable!" The responses, however, were met with nothing but the upbeat tunes emanating from his room.

Love is understood after experiencing it,

The depth of love in a relationship,

Understanding what to cherish after loss.

Outside echoed insults, inside resonated continuous revelry—a defiance by Zhang Yi against everyone. This proved to be true.

Having shot dozens of crossbow bolts, Zhang Yi, feeling a bit fatigued, entered the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of cola from the fridge, gulping it down. "Ah, refreshing!" he exclaimed while monitoring the movements of the crowd outside.

Outside, witnessing the impregnable fortress of Zhang Yi's house, the neighbors felt a mix of anxiety and despair. "What should we do?" they fretted.

At that moment, Sun Zhichao shouted, "Don't worry, everyone! I have a solution!" The crowd turned to see Sun Zhichao limping over, pointing at the wall of Zhang Yi's house. "Their door may be made of alloy, but isn't this wall just bricks and mortar? I don't believe we can't break it!" The revelation sparked excitement among the crowd.

"That's right, why didn't I think of that?"

"If the door won't break, we can smash the wall!"

"With so many of us, it won't take long to break through this wall."

"Haha, Zhang Yi, you scoundrel, didn't expect us to have this method, did you?"

Zhang Yi, inside, raised an eyebrow at the sudden jubilation but remained unperturbed, opting to observe quietly.

After about twenty minutes, the noise outside ceased. The residents, faced with an impenetrable metal wall, sank into despondency. The cruel wall seemed to crush their hopes of accessing resources.

In despair, someone exclaimed, "Why is this happening? Why would someone build a house like this?" Tears streamed down faces as reality set in.

Sun Zhichao, Zhou Peng, and Ge Jialiang, bloodshot eyes, realized that if the entire apartment complex couldn't breach Zhang Yi's house, they were condemned.

Sun Zhichao, biting his lip until it bled, shouted, "Zhang Yi, he knew about the snow disaster! Everything he did was to fend us off!" Angry cries and curses followed from the neighbors, blaming Zhang Yi for his supposed selfishness.

Zhang Yi, unaware of their plight, continued enjoying his time inside. He dismissed their concerns, convinced that he had thought of everything. The constant hammering outside was disrupting, prompting him to activate the room's noise-canceling feature, preventing potential attacks using noise.

After some time, the pounding ceased. The whole building's occupants stared blankly at the metal wall, feeling the chill inside surpassing the external coldness. "What do we do now? Why would someone build a house like this?" someone murmured.

Some residents blamed Zhang Yi for not warning or assisting them, imagining the remorse he must feel. Unbeknownst to them, Zhang Yi was content in his fortified sanctuary.

Chen Zhenghao, holding a gun, was now solely interested in claiming Zhang Yi's house. "Don't worry; this is just the beginning! Even if their walls are iron, what about the ceiling and floor? I don't believe he built an iron box!" he declared coldly.

Zhang Yi, overhearing Chen Zhenghao's words, nodded approvingly. "This guy's brain works well," he remarked with a sigh. "Unfortunately, I'm not foolish." Outside, the neighbors, desperate, began assaulting Zhang Yi's house from above and below, using every tool at their disposal.

They were only 20 centimeters away from their hope of survival. Yet, they soon discovered that Zhang Yi's house was indeed an iron box, impenetrable from every angle. The realization deepened their despair, knowing they would need years to break through with their crude tools in the absence of power tools.
