Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 - The Hunters Guild

Alex's journey through the bustling streets of Greenhaven led him to the imposing structure of the Hunter's Guild. The building, a relic of medieval architecture, stood in stark contrast to the surrounding modern structures, as if a piece of history had been preserved amidst the chaos of the new world.

The guild's emblem, a fierce wolf entwined with a serpent, adorned the massive wooden doors, symbolizing strength and cunning – traits revered among hunters. As Alex stepped inside, he was greeted by a lively atmosphere typical of such guilds in adventure stories.

The main hall was expansive, with high ceilings and banners representing various hunter ranks. The air was filled with the scent of polished wood and old leather, mixed with the faint aroma of exotic spices and herbs, perhaps from potions brewed within these walls.

Hunters of all levels milled about, their armor clinking softly as they moved. Some discussed their latest exploits, while others checked notice boards filled with quests and bounties.

The guild hummed with the sound of hushed conversations, punctuated by occasional laughter or the clank of a weapon being sheathed.

Alex paused for a moment, taking in the sight of weapons and trophies adorning the walls. Each piece seemed to tell its own tale of bravery and adventure. As he gazed at a particularly ornate sword, an elderly hunter approached him. The man's eyes, deep-set and wise, held a glint of curiosity.

"First time at the guild, young one?" he asked in a gravelly voice. Before Alex could respond, the man continued, "Remember, every great hunter was once a novice. Respect, courage, and a keen mind will serve you well here." With a nod, the old hunter shuffled away, leaving Alex to himself.

At the center of the hall was the reception desk, manned by stern-looking officials who managed the day-to-day operations of the guild. Behind them, a large board displayed the names and ranks of all active hunters, a hierarchy that every aspirant aimed to climb. The ranking system, as Alex had learned earlier, ranged from Rank 1 to Rank 5, with each rank represented by a color.

Rank 1 - Initiate (Red Emblem)

Rank 2 - Journeyman (Green Emblem)

Rank 3 - Guardian (Silver Emblem)

Rank 4 - Sage (Golden Emblem)

Rank 5 - Master (Black Emblem)

Alex approached the reception, where a seasoned hunter was discussing a quest with the guild officer. He overheard bits of conversation about tracking a Terra Guardian, one of the formidable creatures from the Verdant Wilds. It was a world away from the boars and wolves Alex had faced in his dreams.

After waiting his turn, Alex introduced himself to the officer, a middle-aged man with a scar running down his cheek. "I'm here to take the Hunter's Test," Alex stated, trying to sound more confident than he felt.

The officer sized him up, his skeptical eyes scanning Alex. "You're quite young. You sure you're ready for this?" he asked, his tone implying doubt.

Alex nodded, determination in his eyes. "I'm ready. I've been preparing for this." The officer gave a noncommittal grunt and handed him a form.

"Fill this out. The test will be tomorrow morning. It's designed to assess your basic skills and potential. Pass it, and you'll earn your Rank 1 badge."

Filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness, Alex completed the form. He used his real name "Alex Walker" when filling up the form. He was given a slip with his test details and a number. "Report to the testing grounds at sunrise. And kid, be prepared. It's not a walk in the park," the officer warned as Alex turned to leave.

At first, Alex was surprised that the officer did not ask him to remove his hoodie, but after spending some time in the guild, he noticed that a number of hunters kept their armor on, which included helmets and masks that shielded their face from any unwarranted danger and gazes.

"I guess it's normal for someone to be covered up here; that's a big relief off my shoulder. I had no idea how I would explain my way around refusing to take off my hoodie to show my face".

As he exited the guild, his mind raced with thoughts of the upcoming test. He had only a day to prepare, to turn his newfound abilities into something tangible.

"This is it, the first real step towards becoming a hunter, towards understanding my powers and this strange transformation," he thought.

Just then, a loud voice echoed through the hall, calling out his number. "Candidate 247, Alex Walker! Report for your preliminary assessment!"

Startled, Alex realized the test was beginning sooner than he expected. Wasn't he supposed to wait until sunrise? His heart pounded in his chest as he turned back towards the reception.

This was the moment of truth, the start of his journey in the world of hunters.
