Chapter 1 - The test

Chapter:1

The test

It was one o'clock in the afternoon on a cloudy day in the city of Roses. Savannah was sitting in psychology, preparing to take her final test when she noticed someone in a suit placing signs in the grass outside the window.

Intrigued, Savannah tried to get a better look but was quickly disheartened to see that the back of the sign was blank. Disappointed, she turned back to her test and began answering the questions with remarkable speed, as they were all ones she had prepared for in her notes.

After about 30 minutes of uninterrupted test-taking, Savannah stood up quietly and walked to the front of the classroom, where Mrs. Benson was calmly grading assignments from a different class. Savannah approached Mrs. Benson's desk directly, but the teacher was so focused on her work that she didn't notice her student right away.

Savannah waited silently for what felt like several minutes. Finally, in a meek yet assertive voice, she said firmly, "Mrs. Benson, I'm finished." The sudden noise startled Mrs. Benson, causing her to jump in her chair.

"Oh, Ms. Gonzales, you finished already?" she asked, surprised.

"Yup! It was all pretty straightforward since you let us use our notes," Savannah replied.

"Good, good! I'm glad you didn't have much trouble. You've always been a diligent note-taker. If you like, you can head home early."

Holding back a cheer of excitement, Savannah calmly responded, "I'd love that! You have a wonderful winter break, Ms. Benson, and I'll see you next year."

Savannah then briskly walked back over to her desk and started to pack up her things. This invited a mix of envious looks and subtle gestures from those in the classroom. James one of Savannah's school friends to whisper.

"kill me"

While placing a finger to his throat and pretending to slice it while tapping on his test then ending his bit by falling over as if his head was actually cut off.

Mrs. Benson, still focused on grading papers, projected her voice as if she were disciplining a mischievous child.

"No cheating!"

Everyone in the class quickly turned their eyes back to their papers, except for James, who continued to lay on his desk, searching for answers on his phone.

Savannah noticed this and shot James a disapproving look, but he was too engrossed in his phone to notice her.

As she packed up her things and headed toward the door at the back of the room, Savannah took one last look around before returning next term. When her gaze landed on Mrs. Benson, she gave her a polite bow and a smile before exiting.

After entering the hallway, Savannah turned her phone back on since she had turned it off for the test. The phone immediately began vibrating with all the notifications she had received.

***Your Amazon package has been delivered.***

***Hi, sweetheart, how was your test?***

***Best of luck, sis! You can do it!***

***What's the answer to number 6?***

Savannah cleared all her notifications before attending to her messages. First, she replied to her dad, then her sister, and finally, James.

***It went well!***

***Of course I can! Big head! By the way, how is your day going? It's so cold here! :) :)***

***No cheating, James! I'll tell Mrs. Benson.***

After sending her last message, Savannah walked through the double doors that led outside. Immediately, she spotted the back of a sign in the grass. This made her look left and right, as if she were about to do something she shouldn't.

Once she was sure the coast was clear, she skipped over to the sign out of curiosity. On a white background with red writing, it read: **"Red Cross Blood Bank"** with a red arrow pointing in the direction of another sign.

Savannah pulled out her phone briefly to check the time, just as her sister sent her a message:

1:36PM

***"Don't get cocky, stinky feet! Also, it feels incredible here; I'm at the beach, trying to get a tan!"***

Savannah replied immediately, her fingers moving so quickly over the screen that it could have probably earned her a world record:

***"My feet don't stink; that's just your upper lip! ;) Also, lucky you! I wish I were in Japan!"***

Savannah bumped right into something and began to fall backward, bracing herself for impact. Suddenly, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her. Once she was secured, she realized her eyes were covered. When she opened them, she saw a smile that had an odd dazzle to it, as the man's mouth was closed, hiding his teeth. He was wearing an all-white lab coat with the name "Riggs" on it. Savannah started scanning her surroundings and noticed that she had arrived at the blood drive. She must have been walking quickly and accidentally bumped into the man in the lab coat.

Riggs helped Savahanna to her feet, and for a moment, they just gazed into each other's eyes.

"So, Riggs, how's it going on Grey's Anatomy?" Savahanna asked mischievously.

Riggs replied with a closed mouth but a bright smile, "Ah, it saddens me to say that while Nathan Smith and I may share a name and an adorable nickname, unfortunately, my looks are too good for the world. I find myself retreating into the back of this shady van to help lower my radiance, even if the quantity is insignificant compared to my great pool of greatness."

This left Savahanna stunned and unsure of how to respond to the clearly narcissistic doctor. She nodded politely to Riggs and was getting ready to turn around and leave when a man in a MAGA hat walked by and immediately started yelling.

"&$#& you little &$&#*# #$# coming ober #@#E FE##E@ sh#@ up we need a wall !@!@ !@!@ illegal @##@ 32is c@##ntry"

Sevanah couldn't tell for sure what the man was saying due to his thick Southern accent, but she caught words like "wall" and "illegal." She figured that whatever it was, it wasn't something she really cared to hear. As she turned to face the man, Riggs approached him and got so close that the man's figure disappeared behind Riggs' lab coat. In a low, menacing tone, Riggs told the man to go back to whatever old, run-down shack he called home and attend to his inbred wife before he ended up giving a blood donation to the sidewalk.

This caused the man to change his attitude as if a switch had been flipped. He took off his hat, looked up like a lost puppy, and began to say something before running off and flipping Riggs the bird.

As Savannah watched this comedic scene play out, another man in a black suit approached her and asked if she was okay. He then offered her a bottle of water and gestured to a seat beside the van.
