"What are you talking about? How could it be me? I don't even know this man. Marshal, please do not believe his mad ravings!"
This back-and-forth exchange solidified a fact in the minds of everyone present in the tent: there must be some truth to Stephen's accusation of Brita colluding with bandits with intentions of rebellion.
Stephen, with a slight smile and in a calm tone, said, "Good, if it's him, then that settles it."
His tone then shifted as he sternly proclaimed, "This man was caught last night as a bandit spy at the entrance of your tent. Even now, you dare to make excuses! Such obstinacy is a disgrace to all soldiers."
"Take these two away and execute them!" he commanded.
As soon as the words were spoken, the guards escorted the two kneeling figures out of the tent.
After two crisp sounds, the cries of injustice and pleas for mercy were abruptly silenced.
Silence once again enveloped the grand tent.
