Chapter 43 - Chapter 39 part 1: Founding Festival

Rimuru's POV:

Finally, it's festival time, and the formal beginning of our federation on the world's stage. Before launching the actual party tomorrow, I had to welcome all the dignitaries we invited, accompanied by the old hag. Shion and Diablo followed us as our guard and butler. Kumi and Testa stayed on standby for these small talks, and will join us once we get to the banquet for the nobles.

Kumi won't be accompanying me solely as my girlfriend of course. She demonstrated her skills and determination to learn under Testa's guidance, enough to satisfy her and start acting as an official. She will still receive advice from our dear Minister of Foreign Affairs for now, but starting from today, Kumi is the Central Bureau's Director. She will oversee the employees of the Central Office and do the link between the different ministries and myself when needed. Man, I'm so proud of her, a true bright star that illuminates Tempest.

I can't wait for the meal, and have a look at her wearing a dress. If I was Japanese, I would already have a nosebleed from my imagination. Talking about dresses, we have managed to make the old hag wear one. I must thank Shion, for her puppy eyes won over Mithra's initial refusal.

We chose a sparkling black one, cut above the thigh in front and flowing down the knees behind; elegant yet highlighting her strength. It let her shoulders apparent, with enough cleavage to hint at what's hidden underneath without giving too much to the eyes. It's still a formal dress after all. Two silver bracelets and earrings completed the picture. Shion wanted to add high heels but we decided it would go too far. We had to avoid giving her a stroke, but this is pretty good already.

She managed to keep a straight face during our meeting with the dignitaries, while being dead inside. Behind her, Shion struggled to hide her joy, witnessing her boss wearing woman clothes for the first time. Diablo let out a smirk, ignoring his shaking legs and remembering the time when all the demons cooperated to use her as a dress-up doll.

Our guests were astonished too, as the legends tell the Demon of Honor always wear neutral gender attires. Gazel let out a whistle of satisfaction. Myuran almost killed her from embarrassment with a shower of compliments. Elmesia was kind enough to not put the final nail on her coffin… Yet.

The rest of the nobles were smart enough to not say anything about it. Most of them had met her once before, when she was distributing her coins to worthy rulers. Outside of the few possessors of said coins, we didn't send invitations to many political figures. Only those who had shown their potential, after a little unsuspected monitoring from Souei and Moss. Not only kings, but we also looked over local aristocrats, as they have their own importance.

After all, most human nations here work by feudality's rules, making lesser ranked nobles more important than one could think at first glance. Many tend to forget, but before absolutism got implemented, kings had to prove themselves to their vassals. Sometimes, dukes and even counts ignored the royal authority if the crown wasn't strong and prestigious enough. A few in history were in reality more powerful than their lord, creating a huge mess in their countries.

Because of this, the guest's list got smaller than what would be regarded as optimal for an event of this size. According to Gazel and Elmesia, they could have up to twice more the number we settled upon for similar festivities. Yet, it's more of an advantage in our case, thanks to Mithra's work in these past centuries.

Our guests will feel honored for this special show of trust. By rebound their lands will become more attractive in the Western Nations, for merchants, intellectuals and commoners alike. It will force the rest of human territories to step up their game, if they don't want to feel weeded out of our sphere of influence. This is also why we don't need to enter the Council and make Testa collapse under unnecessary and tedious meetings with dumbasses. Our soft power will do most of the work.

As the banquet was about to start, Testa and Kumi arrived. A few guests recognized the feared White Primordial in her queenly attire, but it didn't cause much more than a few whispers. Of course, they're all desensitized due to being in the land of two Demon Lords, with one of them being the old hag. As for Kumi…

-"I assume you like what you're seeing, but don't forget to close your mouth or you'll swallow a fly." She laughed and pressed on my chin with her thumb.

-"Well, isn't it normal for a guy to admire the girl he likes? You're beautiful no matter what you wear, but today feels different. You're dazzling in it."

I'm sure I look like an idiot fawning over her, but I can't help it. She wears a night-blue robe flowing down the floor, complementing the golden color of her tails, showing their glory thanks to a diamond-shaped cut in the back. It's also cut on the side to allow a glance to her beautiful legs and highlight all her perfect curves, completed by finely laced sandals. A discreet necklace and two long earrings surmounted with a ruby encapsulate the beauty of her playful face.

Looking around, I see I'm not the only one stunned by her beauty. Many guests are trying to not appear rude by ogling too much. Even Mithra forgot to be gloomy, and went to praise my girl for her great tastes. Testa smiled and silenced a laugh, seeing our little spectacle.

-'Damn, she's so beautiful, I must save this.' Ciel took a pic and placed it in a special folder for 'future references' or something, next to Mithra's pic. 'Once this is over and I can get out, I'll go find a good dress for myself.'

-'Oh? Getting bolder I see. I'll look forward to it.'

-'...Idiot…' She muttered while hiding in a corner of my mind to not let me see how flustered she is.

Somehow, I'm glad Lulu isn't attending due to her secret identity, or she could have created chaos with Kumi, Testa and all the pretty girls here. Ah, and not forgetting Hinata, who represents Ruberios. She looks fine, but can't compare to my girl.

Yuuki gave me a smug look, seeing how bewitched I was. This brat, he won't keep it much longer, as I can easily tease him about Kagali who came alongside him. He may have good social skills, but he remains a typical young japanese guy with an elf fetish. He'll crumble as soon as I target him.

The rest of the Moderate Troop is in the streets having fun, Clayman -with his identity concealed to not create a mess- and his maid included. Laplace also wishes to meet with Elmesia, now he has recovered his previous life's memories. His friends respected his decision, even if they feared he might leave them for good afterwards. Laplace reassured them, stating he won't forget his new family for the old one, but caring for both instead.

Yuuki and Hinata wondered if Shizu would attend the banquet, but she declined. She prefers enjoying the festival with the kids and Chloe, far from the headaches her reputation as a former champion would bring. Dealing with the nobility isn't her forte. Lulu joined them for the time being, before following Hinata as a maid for the dignitaries' tour tomorrow.

Milim's group arrived right at the beginning of the banquet. The appearance of the Destroyer didn't cause a turmoil among the human representatives, nor did the revelation of Elmesia's attendance. Again, most of them were already acquainted with the old hag before I arrived in this world. Witnessing total absurdity once tends to lower the impact of the next absurd things you're going through.

The dishes we served were the culmination of Shuna's hard work, and I won't lie, she's better than me when it comes to pleasing the palates of nobles. Even if I'm competent with high grade recipes, I never sought to reach over-the-top refinement in my own cooking. I prefer the generosity of a common dish over the complexity of these luxury meals.

Everyone praised her full-course. Middray cried between two mouthfuls, cursing his stubbornness in defending his previous beliefs. Hermes and Milim went for a high-five. It's been a few months already but they still find it hard to believe. The raw Spear Tuna had some difficulties to find its public at first, but with the japanese' help it became popular fast. Hakurou and Momiji worked hard to serve everyone, while Yuuki trolled Hinata for her 'childish' taste buds.

-"It's so good." Kumi savored her steak with the grace of a lady, she even managed to refrain from wiggling her tails. "Yet it doesn't feel the same as your cooking. Like it's lacking something."

-"It lacks the love your boyfriend pours into his, maybe." Mithra acted all cheeky between two gulps of beer. "Good for you, Rimuru. You know she'll stay at least for your skills in the kitchen."

-"Man, what a blast to feel supported by your family. I'm grateful for these encouraging words overflowing with trust."

The old hag stuck out her tongue at my sarcasm. Testa was sighing, albeit smiling at our little tomfoolery. Shion was in her mental world and seemed to agree about the power of cooking. Milim didn't care about what happened and razzied the food, forcing Frey to keep her in check.

-"Hey, you can't blame me for having difficulties to realize it's real. You, having a chick. After a literal void as a human, long enough for a normal dude to mummify twice. And now, as a blob, it took you less than two years to get one, and such a breedable beauty at that. What a speedrun."

*Spuuurt*

That remark took us by surprise as I spat out my wine and Kumi choked. Once she recovered, she slapped Mithra with her tails in embarrassment, eliciting laughs from that idiot. Testa hid her face, ashamed of being friends with that braindead, and Shion looked away with a blush.

-"Bwahahaha! This is getting better. Again. Again." Carrion couldn't stay composed anymore and threw away all decency, laughing all-out.

-"Mmh? What was that?" Milim's attention shifted from her food to Mithra's punchline, that's dangerous.

-"Nothing, would you want another steak to help you finish your vegetables? You can have mine, I had enough." Frey took the initiative and diverted Milim from the touchy subject, defusing the bomb. I thank you a thousand times for your keen instincts.

Her twins seemed interested in what we were talking about. Suphia and Albis tried to calm their boss, while Hermes and Phobio decided it was a better idea to do as if nothing was happening on our side. I saw Middray refraining to show his reprobation about us talking shit in the presence of his goddess, as he knew he couldn't win against the old hag.

Once the shock subsided, Kumi couldn't help but follow through, and laugh. Well, we all did. I can't express how precious these moments are. Nor can I tell how relieved I am to see my girl enjoying herself wholeheartedly after her moment of self-doubt this morning.

*A few hours earlier, third POV*

Some time before Rimuru went for his private meetings, he reviewed one last time his planning with Testarossa and Diablo in his office. They got cut off by a knock at the door, and Kumara came in, lacking her usual jolliness as her ears and tails dropped a little.

Rimuru knows her well enough to see she's filled with anxiety. He left his seat and passed by the two demons, before taking her hands in his. He waited for her to speak her mind and troubles, caressing her hands tenderly.

-"Are you sure I should be accompanying you to the dignitaries' tour? I fear I'm not fitting for this."

-"Why do you say that? Perhaps you lack experience in dealing with this kind of guests, but I assure you-"

-"No Rim, that's not it. If it was something so trivial I could have ignored it." She shook her head and groped harder Rimuru's hands as she's trying to find her words. "I… If someone had to follow you for this event, it should be someone like Blanche, Shuna or Testa. They have what it takes to represent our country in a true dignified way, due to their positions and skills. I'm nothing like them. I'm just lucky to be your girlfriend, I don't deserve to be treated as some kind of figurehead."

-"Haaaaaa… I see what's going on here."

Rimuru sighed and released her hands, making Kumara look at him nervously. She then yelped, as he took her by surprise, picking her in a princess carry. As she blushed with a profound red similar to Testa's eyes, Rimuru returned to his seat and put her sideways on his lap. He began to pet her, completely ignoring Testa and Diablo's amazed looks.

-"You say you don't deserve your position, huh? Let me tell you a truth about the world: no one, me, Mithra, neither Testa and Diablo," he glanced briefly at the two demons. "No one reaches their position because they deserve it."

-"...Wat?" Kumara looked at him dumbfounded, her brain couldn't process such a take.

-""Mmmh, I think I understand where it's going."" Funnily enough, Testa and Diablo shared their thoughts at the same time, much to each other's annoyance.

-"You can? Can you explain, because I'm lost. Rim, of course you and Mithra deserve to be where you stand, as this forest's rulers. No one would disagree."

-"What makes you say we deserve it?" Rimuru raised an eyebrow in a playful manner.

-"You two are strong enough to unify and protect the whole land. You got Veldora's blessing and the recognition of the Dryads, you made the unanimity in the minds of all forest's dwellers, and you're so caring of everyone. And there's probably a few more things I forgot. You're a perfect fit for the title." She clenched her fists with determination, having forgotten her own troubles and remembered why she loved him.

-"Hehe. Thanks, but you're looking at it in the reverse order." Rimuru smiled when he saw her sudden mood switch, making him eager to tease her some more afterwards. "You enumerated a few qualities that helped us, but the rest is not about our intrinsic value or abilities. It's first and foremost about circumstances."

-"What do you mean?"

-"Why are we the ones that unified the forest? Elementary my dear Kumara. Because we were lucky no one before us did, that's the answer." Rimuru impersonated a certain detective, eliciting a smirk from Kumara as she understood the reference. "We were strong enough, but others in history may have been. Of course, many were unfortunate to suffer from a harsh competition, something we didn't have to bother with.

We had the backing of the forest's managers and Veldora's permission, but others could have gotten it before us if luck was on their side…" Rimuru stopped for a while, as he got stuck deep in his thoughts. "Okay, that might not be the best example as it's really hard to do, nevermind. My point still stands. Even everyone's loyalty wasn't granted at first, but offering a solution in time of crisis appears to be a good incentive.

This is the truth. We didn't become this forest's rulers because we deserved it, but because we were the first to have such great circumstances in our favor. It's only afterward, by working hard to give a better future to its inhabitants and gaining their true loyalty, that we became deserving."

Realization dawned upon Kumara, as her eyes became big like saucers. Behind her, the demons were nodding. They knew they were the rulers of the Underworld firstly because they were born that way, and only had to show their strength to keep their place. Then, Testa approached with a small grin and pinched Kumara's cheeks.

-"I assume you thought I went easy on you about your studies as a friend, but far from it. It would've been insulting if I did that. I wasn't being ruthless like I can be with my dependents, but that's all." She released Kumara before petting her too. "You have worked hard to satisfy me, and I'm being honest when I say you're ready for it."

-"Kufufufu. Coming from Testarossa, getting this kind of compliment is a feat by itself, I assure you. Stand proud, you've shown your worth in more ways than one." Diablo put his hand on his heart and bowed a little, acting like a proper butler. "Even as Sir Rimuru's girlfriend, I can't think of someone more fitting of the title, much to my dismay."

-"...Care to elaborate?"

Rimuru demanded with an underlying heavy tone, with the girls looking suspiciously at Diablo. Oblivious to the danger, Diablo picked a notebook and lost himself in one of his explanations.

-"Of course my Lord. You see, when you started to show interest in girls, I began to keep track of every characteristic they possessed, pondering how you reacted to them. Then, I compared it to my own female form, which I will refrain from showing you. Unfortunately for me, it doesn't really meet enough good points for your standards yet. I admit my loss on that matter for now, until I have successfully reworked my physique."

An awkward silence fell. Testa made a step backward to stay far enough from this idiot. Rimuru and Kumara looked at each other with dread, feeling something creeping on their back.

After a while, their mood switched. Kumara left Rimuru's lap, a murderous gaze scarring her face. As for the slime, he pinched his nose hard, trying to not erupt himself.

-"Diablo. Don't move. And don't raise your defenses either. Kumi, go for it, as hard as you can."

-"With pleasure." Kumara walked toward the creep, her aura bursting as she coated her leg with Soul Magic. "This is the last time you're prying on me, pervert."

She kicked him in the nuts with all the strength she could muster. The loud crack didn't leave any room for imagination about the fate of his crotch. Even if he was disappointed at Diablo, Rimuru winced and couldn't help but feel empathy. He remembered some painful memories when the shockwave reached him.

-"Hm-hm. As she said, you better not try anything funny again toward her, or any girls while I'm at it. I don't really mind if it's only me, but be aware of the limits. Got it?"

-"M-My apologies. I'm ashamed of my own stupidity. Be assured, Kumara, I will do what I can to repair the wrong I did." He managed to show genuine regret and bow without letting his pain bother him. "I will let you finish in peace, and I'll meet you later for the private meetings, my Lord."

He left at a steady pace… Well, as steady as he could, with how much his legs were shaking. Kumara looked away, not acknowledging that idiot's regrets for the moment being. Testa let herself fall on a chair, throwing elegance out of the window. She couldn't believe this guy is her sibling, and felt ashamed to have him as a fellow Primordial.

-"Well, forgetting about this unfortunately too believable Diablo moment… You don't need to doubt yourself Kumi." Rimuru stood up and embraced her from behind. "Okay, you had favorable circumstances, but same as everyone here. You have proven your skills afterward, thus you deserve it. End of story."

-"I see your point now. Thanks a lot you two, and sorry for returning to my bad habits. Well, I'll see you for the banquet. Don't get distracted in the meantime, Rim, do your job properly."

Kumara left, but not without giving a wink to her beloved slimy boy. Relieved to see she's in high spirits again, Rimuru finished his meeting with a light heart.

*End of flashback, return to Rimuru's POV*

Outside of our table, the banquet went well. Elmesia couldn't help but tease Gazel after they witnessed our tomfoolery. I wonder what she's saying to make him bury his head in his hands, must be epic. Good luck pal, don't die on me yet.

The other dignitaries relaxed and dropped the decorum after watching us. I know Shuna would be cringing if she saw what's happening, but it's not like she could do anything. When the old hag has decided to do things her way, we can't change it.

Every guest left for their rooms with a full stomach and sweet dreams about our food. According to Souei's report, everything is fine and under control in the streets, so we'll take our leave for the night too.

-"I'll go on my way then. Good night, Boss. I hope you'll enjoy yourself tomorrow." Shion waved at Mithra before leaving with little hops, hiding a sly smile.

-"...Okay? Good night to you too. Geez, what is she implying? I bet she planned something unexpected, and I'm a little afraid she's going overboard." She scratched her head and turned to us. "I'll go back home first, so I can be free from this dress as long as possible. Don't take too long, it would be bad if you're not fresh for the actual party, you two."

I understood what she implied, and Kumi too, seeing how hard she's blushing. Of course we wouldn't do it tonight, not when we're in the middle of such an event. What does she take us for?

Nevermind. As for what Shion planned to do, she trusted Kumi and I about it a few days ago while searching for Mithra's dress. Honestly, I was taken aback. Even knowing she was raised as Shuna's guardian and had to learn such things, I underestimated her. I'm sure the old hag is in the same boat, and she will fall from her seat tomorrow. I'm curious to see how it will play.

In the streets, Chloe's POV:

Aaaah, the founding festival. I can't tell how many times I experienced it, but the effect's still the same. It shows that Rimuru managed to survive long enough, making this timeline stand among the previous catastrophic ones. It's like a checkpoint, kinda.

It's funny to spot all the differences between the festival iterations. Some things never change, like Veldora running a stand under his alias 'Alias'. This time, Myourmiles wasn't working in the planification of the event, but I saw him checking on his employees' shop, a little further. This man really has a good smell for money, I'm sure he'll find a way to stand above the merchants this time too.

And most important of all, Shizu is alive and enjoying herself. It hits so differently, seeing her acting more childish alongside Alice and the others, forgetting the harsh life she faced, partly because of me.

-"Hey Chlo, do you prefer a crepe or an ice cream?" Alice ran in alternance between two stands, salivating.

-"A crepe sounds good, wait for me."

-"I'll take two, I'm hungry." Shizu said while her stomach rumbled, unfazed by the boys laughing at her acting like a glutton again. "While I'm at it, what flavor do you want, Lulu?"

-"It's hard to decide, so I'd say… The same as yours." Luminous said cheerfully, humming as she's enjoying visiting incognito with our group.

For her disguise, she chose an unusually simple, red and black dress, completed with sandals and a summer hat. She could pass for another tourist in the streets like that. It's a weird change, having her next to me while I'm still keeping my act for the kids. At least she isn't trying anything stupid that would blow my cover.

When the others heard Shizu's explanation about this unknown girl following her, they took it without any problem. A friendly vampire she met during her first stay in Tempest, and who's also friends with Rimuru, of course they would accept it. Shizu being their model, her friends are held in pretty high regard quite fast.

-"Can a vampire even eat something other than blood? Or maybe it's to hide the mouth's smell." Kenya mumbled without a care, thinking we wouldn't hear it.

-"Won't you share your thoughts louder, boy?" Lulu pressed her index under his throat, a menacing smile displaying her fangs.

-"Hiiii! I'm sorry!"

A true Kenya moment. He hid behind Shizu, only to get scolded by her. I swear, this boy manages to be rude to at least one girl in each timeline, without fault. And I don't know why, he picks on the most dangerous girl in the vicinity every time. Is he a masoch- Wait. What am I thinking? I'm getting corrupted by Lulu, Mithra and their nonsense. One pervy woman wasn't enough, now we have another contender.

We sat on a bench where we ate our crepes in peace. It tasted so good, it's worth living for these small pleasures. Glancing on the side, I saw Shizu eating hers so fast she got cream on her cheek. And Lulu wiped it with her fingers and licked it, teasing the poor girl, nothing out of the ordinary…

…So, she's starting to flirt with Shizu now she's fully healed? Why am I not surprised? It's even a feat for that vampire to have waited for so long before making a move. Well, I won't intervene. Sorry Shizu, but it's easier for Hinata and I if one more girl becomes her target, lowering the pressure on us.

-"Heh, already searching for a new pussy to eat, aren't you?"

-"Who said that?" Lulu jolted at the crudeness of the remark and turned to the origin of the voice.

Pico and Gracia waved at us, their arms overloaded with goods. Of course it would be the winged gremlin, I can't believe an Angel got such a foul mouth. Shizu took the opportunity to escape from Lulu's flirtation and went to pinch Pico's cheeks and lectured her.

-"You can't use this kind of language in front of children, you idiot. How do you intend to atone if they start imitating you? Even Mithra and Lulu know better than that."

-"She's right. If that happens, I'll consider that I don't know you. I don't wanna get my reputation tainted by your actions. I had enough with Dino freeloading for thousands of years." Gracia abandoned her colleague and went to sit next to Alice. "Kids, forget what you heard. It's adult talk."

-"Sorry…" Pico dropped her head in shame. She didn't say anything when Shizu began to pat her once the lecture ended.

-"As long as you're careful next time, it's good."

Thankfully, Kenya and the others didn't press the matter and we changed subjects. We girls were having a surprisingly normal talk, while the boys got excited about the planning of the next day.

-"I can't wait for the tournament to start. We'll be cheering for you, teacher. Show them what you're made of." Gale said as he looked at a poster showing the colosseum. The others encouraged Shizu soon after.

-"Thanks, I'll do my best and make you proud." She stroked their hair, causing a few laughs.

-"Still, be careful. You're not perfectly used to your new power yet." Lulu surprised her with a pat, eliciting a huge sigh of resignation from Pico.

-"I-I know, don't worry." Shizu froze and stuttered under the embarrassment. "I'm not planning to overdo it. I want to have some fun fights, now I can wield my sword and flames without putting others at risk."

Shizu in the tournament… I never hoped to see that one day. But if the contestants are the same and she's unlucky, she could have to face Lion Mask, or that disgusting adventurer that killed Myourmiles in the Labyrinth. Well, I'm sure nothing will go wrong, Rimuru wouldn't let something happen to her.

…Wait, I almost forgot after all this time, but someone's missing. Where's Masayuki? We never heard anything about his achievements this past year… Is he even in this world yet?

The next day, Mithra's POV:

Aaaaaaah… It's good to return to my normal attire. I can't stand dresses, I feel so out of place and vulnerable in them. I prefer the sturdiness of a good ol' uniform or the simplicity of everyday clothes.

Today we start with the first official performance of Tempest's Concert. I didn't take a peek during the rehearsal to not spoil myself the fun of the real deal, and I was right to do so, as Rimuru told me I'll have a run for my money. We don't have the same tastes in music, but I know I can trust him when he's serious.

Unlike yesterday, Shion isn't following me. Apparently she's needed by Benimaru on some project. That's weird though… Bah, whatever. No need to stick my nose in it, she's competent, I trust her to do her job.

I sense the excitation of our guests. Between yesterday's banquet and the opera's architecture, they expect something grandiose from the Concert. Well, knowing how our citizens tend to surpass themselves in anything they're doing, we'll have a blast listening to the performance.

Lulu took a place behind Hinata in her maid attire, she really knows how to act inconspicuous. I imagine the uproar if both her secret identities were to get revealed to the humans. Obviously I won't do anything to spread the word, I'm not an asshole.

Ah, the lights faded, it's time. The conductor, Takt, arrived and saluted the audience, while the musicians readied themselves to show their hard work to the world. It's funny to see all races participating, when you remember how fragmented the forest was less than two years ago.

As expected, it's like candy for the ears. These guys honed their skills to the extreme, they're doing honor to most famous bands I know of. I recognized a few classical pieces from our old world, an original creation and… Wait, are these?

-'Anime openings, heh? That's a bold move y'know. Not that I find it unpleasant mind you.' Yuuki sent a telepathic message and gave a thumb-up to Rimuru while slowly banging his head.

-'Not only anime, I also gave them a few game soundtracks to work with.' He fell deep in his seat, hands behind the head. 'Why not go all-out with the references when we can?'

-"What the? Captain Harlock?" I looked at the slime in disbelief. 'You son of a… You did it.'

-'Heh. I thought I had to give you a little surprise. You can thank me for having seen some old school pieces of work, since you wouldn't know the modern ones.'

-'Hey, low blow. We aren't the same generation, but even I know a few modern bangers.'

-'Like what?'

-'Guren no Yumiya.'

-'Based, even if it wasn't that modern anymore when we left Earth . I remember falling on the floor the first time I saw you watching it and yelling like a madwoman.' He summoned sunglasses to get in the mood.

-'...Rim. You'll have to show me these 'anime' if you can.' Kumara looked at us with great interest. 'And it seems I'm not the only one to be curious about it. Right, Hinata?'

-'Errr… Okay, I concede, I am interested too. Who wouldn't?' She was on the defensive, revealing her tsundere side. 'I wasn't a massive consumer of manga and anime, but I'll appreciate having access to it again.'

Great. If it continues, we could create a club of manga/anime lovers. Ah, we'll have to include Veldora and Ramiris in it, or they'll throw a tantrum if we let them out. Milim too. The class S would like it to be in it, Scylla started to read a few series. Mmh, let's not forget to introduce Shizu to this marvelous world, we'll show her what her country managed to create. Somehow, I think even Shion, Carr and Esprit would be interested. What a glorious fuckfest it would be if everyone shared this passion. I'll have to read some myself, it's been ages.

While we were discussing anime, the representation almost finished. It's a shame, time flies so fast when we're enjoying ourselves. Welp. Next is the scientific presentation then… Ah? The light turned off again. There's an extra? Good, I wanted more.

So, this time it's Shuna and… Shion? What the… Is that a violin? Does she know how to play such a difficult instrument?

*Duet starts*

…Wow. She can. I didn't expect that. She's completing Shuna's piano so well. And since when was she practicing? I never saw her with an instrument before… She's so full of surprises. And that dress. It suits her so well and encapsulates her curves, with her hair flowing freely. It's like she's dancing.

-"...How come I never noticed how beautiful she is?"

-'Is her dress that stunning?' I heard Rimuru on my left laughing in my head. 'Well, I'm sure a few here had a similar reaction when they saw you wear one yesterday.'

-'Y'know what? I'm gonna keep a picture of your face and edit it a little. It will look good if I make you look like you're drooling.' Ciel opened an encrypted line to tease me.

-'For sure. You should wear one more often, you have a great body and it would be a shame to not put it in value once in a while.' Kumara enjoyed toying with me too.

-'I can't believe I'm saying that, but I agree with her. But don't get a big-head from it. You still aren't my type, idiot.' And now it's Lulu who's putting the last nail.

Somehow, I didn't reply to their remarks. No, I'm too focused on Shion's performance for that. So delicate, yet so violent, a good recall of who she is; gentle and cheerful, with a strong latent power hiding the inner turmoil she faced for years.

…I'm ashamed of myself. She's been around me for quite long, and I never imagined she had such talent. I was too focused on training her as my right-hand, or telling stories about us when she showed interest. And the times I asked about herself, I fear it was superficial. Tch, what kind of friend am I, seriously?

When their performance ended, they and the philharmonic received an ovation. It's deserved, they demonstrated the depth of their skills and brought pride to the nation. On my side, I forced myself to not let my concerns transpire, and applauded with all my might. I have to find a way to apologize. Also I'll arrange my schedule for the week to pass more time with her, I need to compensate for the few times I let her alone the past month without notice.

We left the opera and moved toward the Science Exhibit. Shion told me she will join us for the tournament, as she has to get changed and talk with the musicians. Behind me, I could hear Lulu ranting to Hinata about the prestation, and how they need to bring some people here to pump up Ruberios' creativity. It's good to see that vampire can act like a proper ruler herself when she's not horny.

In the exhibit dome, we could observe many mock-ups of ongoing projects and boards full of complicated calculations. The scholars among our guests were already scrutinizing everything with all their souls. You could hear the gears in their heads rotating at full speed.

Vesta was waiting in front of a table full of potions, and with him… Dino?

-"Hey, where's Gabiru?" I turned toward Rimuru who didn't seem that surprised.

-"He decided to enter the tournament, so Dino came to replace him. Don't worry, Charys hid his favorite pillow to be sure he wouldn't dare take a nap during the exposition."

-"Greetings, ladies and gentlemen." Vesta bowed, a handful of papers in hands. "I bid you welcome to our little exhibit, which I hope will be successful in demonstrating the advancements of Tempest on the scientific domain. Without further ado…"

He started by explaining the history of our potions and their potency in an overly academic way. Many guests were bored, some started to doze off. I even managed to get lost while I already knew the basics of it. Well, the theoretical way isn't what suits me best, so…

-"Sorry Vesta, but it seems we need something more stimulating." Dino intervened without yawning, such willpower. "Why not do a little demo to mark the minds?"

-"Hmmm. Indeed, it would suit the atmosphere best. Then, everyone. If you could pay attention to this."

Vesta then picked a broken sword, and proceeded to drop some potion on the blade, gluing the pieces back. This display shocked almost everyone. Next, his explanation about the phenomenon and the true nature of Hipokute caused an uproar. Now I see what he did. He deliberately acted in a too serious way first to give more weight to his demonstration. Good idea, the little dramatic effect.

-"Hmm, isn't it too dangerous to reveal something like this to the world so casually?" Kumara whispered, a hand on her chin.

-"It would be if the human nations had the capacity to do something in grand-scale with this information. And that's the important word: 'if'." I whispered back with confidence. "We can do it thanks to the magicule-rich environment of the forest and our living generator called Veldora."

-"I'll add that these potions have a limit, no matter how potent they are." Testa approached with the intention of teaching her pupil. "They lose most of their utility once you reach a certain power threshold, and can't heal every type of wound. It's useful for mortals, but with everyone's strength in Tempest, we can heal anything in more efficient ways."

-"I see. So, we can reveal the secret behind the potions, we won't care because it's already a commodity like another for us and we have better. Because it will be hard for outsiders to develop their own at an industrial scale, we'll still benefit from our dominant place in the market for a long time." Kumara nodded and crossed her arms. "Also, since we're revealing it only to our trusted guests, it will serve as another incentive for the lords of poorly managed lands to work harder."

-"Full marks, well done." Rimuru went to pat her. "Your concerns were valid, it's good to question the implications behind any disclosure. But don't worry, we already defined what must be kept secret beforehand."

Yeah, we discussed it with the scientific department's executives. There's a few inventions we would release in due time to the world, once the fundations for a proper usage had been laid. And there's some others we will straight-up ban or control massively because of the experience we got on Earth.

When we explained our reasoning, Vesta, Gabiru and Kaijin agreed, despite their prior reluctance in impeding science in any way. Ramiris and Dino were on the same wavelength as us. They knew about Veldanava's prediction about the demise of civilizations due to unregulated progress. We're not fans of his ruthless solution called 'Tenma War', but we admit there's at least a good reason behind it.

The presentation ended soon, and the dignitaries discussed among themselves what they learned on the way to the coliseum. They are all competent leaders as expected. They understand the value of these discoveries and are already wondering how to use them for the good of their countries.

And most surprising of all, Dino did a good job in helping Vesta. He's still lazy most of the time, but he's starting to work without needing a scolding from us once in a while. It seems finally knowing about his boss' whereabouts gave him some motivation. Too bad he didn't change clothes, looking like a neet as usual. I can't believe they all thought it looked like a useful suit for experimenting in a lab.

We arrived at the VIP lodging. Since the tournament is an optional activity, some guests took their leave and went strolling in the streets instead. As she's not needed for now, Testa also went to profit from the festival with Blanche. I swear I saw her do little hops while humming, but it's best if I keep quiet.

-"Hi, boss." Shion arrived on my left, a little nervous. "Did you like my surprise?"

-"That was incredible. What other talents do you hide from me?" I pointed to the seat next to mine, telling her to sit since there's enough for everyone.

-"Nothing else, I swear. But I'm so happy you like it."

-"...Hey, Shion." I looked at the floor, finding it interesting all of sudden. "I'm sorry."

-"Huh? For what?" She tilted her head in confusion.

-"Once the festival ends, I plan to get a free week, so I can compensate for my unplanned absences this past month. I'm not talking about training. For example, I would like you to teach me how to play music among other things. I tried before, but I kinda sucks… If that's good with you of course."

-"...With pleasure." She beamed and almost jumped out of her seat of joy.

-"Ah, one last thing. I should have done this way earlier but, when we're off-duty, don't call me 'Boss'. Call me by my name, okay?"

-"Okay. Somehow, it makes me nervous."

I chuckled at her remark, she's cute when she acts so innocently. Well, that's a good thing done, and a weight lifted off my shoulders. I didn't name her just to be my guard after all, I wanted to help her grow as a person, and be a true friend. It's time I act the latter part some more.

So, today we have the quarters and the semi-finals, the final is kept for tomorrow as a link for the Labyrinth's revelation. We have many known faces among the contenders: Shizu, Gabiru, Mezul and Gozul from Tempest; Carrion hiding his identity as Lion Mask; a rude A-rank adventurer from Ingrassia named Gaiye; Grucius, who wants to impress Myulan… Wait a minute. That girl, is that Clayman's maid? Eva, was it? Okay.

The quarters were short and one-sided most of the time. Carrion pummelled Gabiru into the ground after taking a firm grip on his trident. Bad luck again, he faced the worst opponent right away, his speed and aerial advantage meant nothing as Carrion got experience thanks to Frey. Grucius subdued Mezul with ease, that's the ex-captain of Eurazania's guard for you. Shizu turned the fucker adventurer into charcoal after he insulted her, under the applauses of the arena. The humans in the public were surprised to see the Conqueror of Flames was still alive and kicking, and cheered for her. Lastly, Eva choked Gozul with a thicc thigh grab, making the bull pass out… That was interesting, for lack of better words.

-"You can't imagine how much I envy him. I want to be between these legs so badly." Lulu licked her lips in a way too suggestive way.

-"Of course we can. No horny." Those who know her spoke in unison without batting an eye —minus Milim, who didn't care— making her pout.

After a small break, the semis started with another rapid clash between the two Beastmen. Even if Carrion had to hide his true strength to not give away his identity, he still showed his blatant superiority against the poor wolf guy. Well, Grucius still arbored a proud smile as he got an opportunity to face his idol.

The fight between the girls proved to be intense and spectacular. Fists and kicks against sword and fire. A dance of swift strikes, feints and counterattacks. Eva got the advantage in experience and skills —I heard she can even subdue Clayman— but Shizu is giving her a good fight. Not only she recovered from her separation with Ifrit and the loss of her previous Unique Skill, but now she's beyond her prime when she was an adventurer.

Shizu mastered the control of her flames thanks to her new Spirit and an intensive training with Charys, who wanted to redeem himself toward her. It's still awkward between them, but at least she's not antagonizing him anymore and accepted his apologies. Also, her desire to live and help in creating a better future for the children crystallized into a new Skill.

[Teacher] is more of a support Skill, destined to help others grow, but it has a twist. When those labeled as her students learn something under its influence, she gains a part of their experience, stored inside the Skill. A true display of a teacher's role, growing alongside one's students and gathering knowledge together.

Of course, it's not working with Chloe, as she's stronger and more experienced than Shizu, but that's not a problem. Thanks to the kids' efforts, she got better at handling her own Spirit. If it continues that way and they master their own fighting styles, Shizu will gain part of their experience and become a real jack of all trades.

They went back and forth, waiting for an opening. Despite their difference in strength, Eva knew better than rushing and risking to face head-on a heavy flare that could damage a Seed. Yet, it couldn't continue for long.

Feeling her stamina depleting, Shizu took a bold gamble and rushed for a finishing move in hope it would suffice. She's fast, but not enough to take her opponent by surprise. Eva charged her Battlewill to the max and deflected the strike. She suffered a few burns, but the result is clear: Shizu fell on her knees and surrendered.

Despite her loss, the audience cheered for her, elated to have witnessed firsthand the return of a human champion after a long period of calm. In the row behind me, I saw Yuuki blowing his nose, happy for his foster mother, while Hinata teased him about being a good boy.

The events of the day finished on a good note. Now it's free time for everyone, I'll make sure it's going well with Veldora. We wouldn't want him creating a mess by accident and let slip up his identity to passersby.

In the evening, Third POV:

-'Marvellous! My shop runs at full capacity, and I can tell by my customer's expressions it will continue like that until I'm out of stock.' Veldora laughed in his head as he displayed his skills with spatulas, flipping meat on the grill. "Come! Come and fill your stomachs with treats prepared by the mighty Veld— Ahem… Alias, the master of Japanese street food."

-"I returned with more soy sauce, Master." Ramiris struggled with the weight of her cargo, despite Beretta carrying most of it.

-"Thanks, my apprentice. I'll let you complete this order while I fry the next batch. Oh, hey girls!" He noticed Ultima and Carrera patrolling this way and called them. "You don't seem to be busy. Wanna try something?"

-"Mmmh… I'll take some takoyaki, it looks appetizing. At least it will occupy me because I have nothing to do." Ultima leaned on the counter and sighed.

-"Yakitori for me, thanks. I pity you, midget. You won't have much work as the Head of Police, so you can dedicate more time to your side job as a brewer for Sir Rimuru." Carrera poked Ultima's cheek with a smug, making her groan.

-"To be honest, I don't know if we should pity or be impressed by the guts of the first one who will break the law here. It would be the same level of suicide as pissing off Lady Velzard." A blue haired girl wearing jeans, a jacket and a beret spoke while eating a sandwich.

-"That's for sure. When that happens, we shall write the name of the fool, so it will be kept for posterity… Wait." Ultima bugged and turned toward the intruder. "Slacking off in another country again, Rain?"

-"Why is this your conclusion?" Rain stepped backward, feigning shock. "I merely took the liberty to watch this place for Sir Guy, making sure nothing outlandish is happening."

-"Yeah, so you're slacking off. Heh, not our buisness anyway. We won't save you if you get caught." Carrera decided to ignore her and watched Veldora prepare her order.

The three demonesses engaged in small talk, and took place around a table once they got their food. Despite saying they were bored, Ultima and Carrera couldn't hide how they enjoyed the atmosphere in the streets. Even troublemakers and battle maniacs can love peace and fun. Soon, Testa and Blanche joined them, the latter having her arms full of treats.

-"Why are you overloaded? You know you don't need to eat if you want to grow now you're a demon." Carrera chuckled at Blanche's difficulties to not drop anything on the floor.

-"I couldn't choose, so I didn't bother and took everything. And I don't know everyone's tastes well enough, so I'm sure you'll find something you'd like this way." The young girl tilted her head, looking at the blondie.

-"Urrgh." Carr and Ult suffered a heavy blow from Blanche's innocent reply. They don't know why, but her marks of friendship are so effective toward them.

-"So cute, you really look like her sister." Rain's artistic tendencies bursted as she scrutinized Blanche in every angle. "Imagining you, posing as an aged down Testa, that would be epic. I would pay a generous amount to not be the youngest anymore."

-"Stop deluding yourself, idiot. You are the youngest, and will ever be. And leave her alone." Testa shooed her sibling, making Blanche laugh at her overprotectiveness.

-"No way. She's calling you big sis? Then I'll take her as my sister too." Rain tried to overpower Testa physically and they got stuck in a deadlock. The white queen smirked as she knew it was more playful than anything. "It's fine though? I heard she became the co-queen of your lineage, so technically my point stands."

-"I agree. At least Blanche is someone I'd be glad to call my little sister, with how adorable she is. Not like someone I know." Carrera gave a side glance to Ultima who stopped eating after this insinuation.

-"Bitch, say it if you can't stand my royal grace. Who would like a barbarian like you in their family anyway? Even this crybaby," she pointed at Rain, who protested on the spot. "And even the boring Mizery aren't such eyesores."

-"Now you asked for it, brat." Carrera cracked her knuckles. "Don't cry after I give you a good spank, that's the only thing your underdeveloped body is good for."

-"You dare? I'll remodel your face so hard even Dagruel will look like a beauty god in comparison."

This is how a brawl started between these two. Thankfully they were aware of their surroundings and only used their fists to reduce the incoming mess. It didn't prevent the passersby from becoming uneasy, even when Testa and Rain tried to stop this unsightly spectacle.

Blanche could only stay on the side, helpless and wondering 'Should I go fetch the Police?'. Only to remember one of the belligerents is the Police. When she noticed a familiar muscular woman accompanied by a purple-haired oni coming this way, she let out a nervous laugh. It was clear Carrera and Ultima would have a bad time soon enough.
