Chapter 37 - HOW DO I SPEAK

Detective Philip arrived at Jesse's place, stepping out of his black saloon Benz car, hoping it had weathered the challenging road conditions intact. Jesse emerged from the room, holding baby Ama on his shoulder.

As the baby caught sight of the detective, her face lit up with joy, and she started squealing and bouncing in excitement. Jesse, curious about his sister's sudden happiness, turned to see Detective Philip approaching with a warm smile for the baby. Baby Ama, eager to be closer, nearly jumped into the detective's arms, eliciting a chuckle from him.

"Going somewhere?" Detective Philip inquired, glancing at Jesse while continuing to play with baby Ama.

"We were going to get some lunch," Jesse replied.

"Well, then, I haven't had lunch myself. We can go together if you're okay with it," Detective Philip suggested, still entertaining baby Ama in his hands. Before Jesse could respond, Detective Philip smoothly sent the delighted baby back to his car. Jesse hesitated briefly before calling his mum to inform her that they would be out for a while.

Jesse settled into the backseat of the car, and Detective Philip suggested, "You should have come upfront."

Choosing to remain silent, Jesse gazed out the window, lost in thought. Detective Philip, undeterred, attempted to place baby Ama in the passenger seat, but the baby insisted on staying attached to the detective. With no other option, Detective Philip drove with baby Ama on his lap.

They headed out of Madina towards the nearby KFC restaurant. Parking the car, Detective Philip stepped out, with Jesse following at a slower pace. As they approached the restaurant entrance, Detective Philip inquired about what food baby Ama could eat.

"She can eat the same food we'll be having. However, you'll have a hard time feeding her with those foods," Jesse replied quietly.

Opting for the upstairs area, which was almost deserted, they settled in. Jesse, expressing indifference to the choice of food, was served jollof, ordered by Detective Philip. The detective ordered the same for himself and baby Ama, knowing she couldn't consume the entire meal. He made a mental note to buy baby food later.

Detective Philip glanced at Jesse, who hadn't touched his food. "You can dig in," he suggested, bringing Jesse back to the present. Jesse nodded and began eating, while Detective Philip fed baby Ama small amounts of rice.

Observing the man before him, quietly consuming his meal, Detective Philip couldn't help but notice Jesse's soft features. From his big, cute eyes and small nose to his little chubby cheeks, Jesse's small, lean figure and attractive lips.

A sudden jerk in his lower body diverted Detective Philip's attention. Deciding to focus on the baby, he discovered she was fast asleep. Gently cradling her against his chest, he resumed his meal.

Glancing at Jesse, now playfully toying with a spoon in the rice, Detective Philip couldn't help but smile. Something was intriguing about the man before him.

"Can we talk now?" Detective Philip inquired.

Jesse raised his head, meeting the detective's gaze, and nodded. "Good. So, what did you want to tell me?" Detective Philip asked, his eyes fixed intently on Jesse.

"Will you be recording?" Jesse softly questioned in a hushed tone.

Detective Philip stared at him momentarily before chuckling. "Even if I were to record, I doubt the recorder could capture what you'd be saying, given the way you speak."

"How do I speak?" Jesse asked, raising his head to look back at the detective.

"Above a whisper," Detective Philip replied, still keeping his eyes fixed on the man.

Jesse maintained his unwavering gaze on Detective Philip, who reciprocated the stare. Sensing an unexpected tension building, Detective Philip felt a rush of arousal in his cock, he could feel it rising.

Detective Philip, feeling a rising tension, broke the intense stare with Jesse. Sensing the palpable energy between them, he cleared his throat to refocus.

"I'm not recording. Let's get this done," he stated, attempting to shift the atmosphere back to the purpose of their conversation.

Jesse, seemingly unaware of the impact of his actions on Detective Philip, licked his lips, unintentionally intensifying the detective's arousal. "I didn't kill him, and I don't know what happened to him," he paused briefly before continuing, "but I know the last person he was with," Jesse revealed.

Detective Philip, though grappling with his own emotions, decided to focus on the conversation. "And if I may ask, who was it?" he inquired.

"It was his girlfriend," Jesse replied. The detective, now fully attentive, listened closely.

"Why didn't you mention this when Elena was looking for clues?" Detective Philip questioned. Jesse remained silent, staring back at his food.

"Where is she located?" Detective Philip pressed further.

"At Nima," Jesse responded.

"Well, Nima is not that far. We can pass there," Detective Philip suggested, but Jesse continued to play with his food, offering no response.

"Should I have them pack it up for you?" Detective Philip asked. After a moment's hesitation, Jesse nodded, considering the option to share the restaurant meal with his mother, as they hadn't enjoyed food from a restaurant in a long time.

They left the restaurant after the food had been packed, with Detective Philip making a quick stop at a small supermarket to purchase a pack of baby food for sleeping baby Ama. The journey to Nima was mostly silent, although Detective Philip occasionally stole glances at Jesse through the rearview mirror.

Guided by Jesse, who spoke only when asked for directions, they reached an old house. The large house accommodated numerous tenants, resembling a compound house available for rent. Detective Philip decided to bring sleeping Ama with them as Jesse led them into the house, where they encountered an old man sitting at the entrance, absorbed in a newspaper.

"Good afternoon, pa," Jesse greeted softly, and the old man nodded. "I wanted to see Akua," Jesse explained.

"Ah, Akua," the old man croaked, pointing towards a door on the left corner. "Go to the door on the left corner; you'll find her mum there."

Expressing his gratitude, Jesse led the way followed by Detective Philip. Jesse knocked on the door twice, and after a brief moment, a chubby woman opened the door.

"Who are you, and how may I help you?" the woman inquired. Before Jesse could respond, Detective Philip interjected.

"I wanted to see your daughter," he said, flashing one of his charming smiles.

"She's not here at the moment," the woman replied.

"Oh, that's no problem. When will she be here? I can come back," Philip suggested.

"She traveled to our hometown three weeks ago," the woman explained.

"Please come inside, and I'll get you some water. Sorry for making you stand outside," she offered as she opened the door wider for them.

"No, that will be okay. I just wanted to discuss something important with your daughter. I would be glad if you could give me the specific details of where she is at the moment," Detective Philip requested with a friendly smile.
