Chapter 30 - ATTEMPTED MURDER

Detective Philip arrived at Rexford's residence, where a small contingent of police awaited his presence. Tasmina, overcome with urgency, rushed past the officers and entered the house. Straight to the kitchen she went, opening a sizable fridge, revealing her sister in a distressing state—bleeding profusely and unnaturally cold.

Detective Philip, calmly approaching, witnessed the heartbreaking scene. Victoria's lifeless form lay within the chilling confines of the fridge. Tasmina, visibly shaken, stood in despair.

With a measured demeanour, Detective Philip carefully lifted Victoria from the fridge, his experienced hands swiftly checking for signs of life. A faint pulse offered a glimmer of hope, albeit feeble. Urgency propelled him into action; he cradled Victoria and swiftly conveyed her to his waiting car, where Yaw silently trailed behind.

Leaving Tasmina in a state of shock, Detective Philip initiated the car, racing towards Ridge Hospital with Victoria's fragile pulse hanging in the balance. The air of urgency accompanied them as the detective navigated the city streets, determined to secure medical intervention for the gravely injured sister.

As Detective Philip sped towards Ridge Hospital, he maintained focus, his mind racing with the urgency of the situation. Yaw, ever-loyal, holding Vicky's body at the back silently.

Upon reaching the hospital, Detective Philip swiftly coordinated with the medical team. Victoria, now confirmed to be in a coma, was admitted for immediate attention. The sterile hospital surroundings contrasted with the intensity of the ordeal.

Detective Philip, waiting anxiously, grappled with the weight of the unfolding events. The medical staff worked diligently to stabilize Victoria, their efforts a beacon of hope in the midst of uncertainty.

In the quiet of the hospital corridor, Detective Philip contemplated the tangled web of mysteries surrounding the Rexford family. With Victoria in a coma, the investigation took on a renewed significance. Determined to unearth the truth, Detective Philip prepared for the challenges that lay ahead, aware that the answers might lie hidden within the depths of the unfolding drama.

"What's going on?" Maddy inquired as Nathan, part of the backup Inspector Evans arranged, joined them as they had just arrived.

He was part of the group which help caught Thomas.

"It's about Officer Rexford's son," he answered.

"You mean Thomas?" Freda, another colleague, asked.

Gathered in the reception area where Peter and Maddy used to sit, Maddy stated, "He had one son, Freda."

"I don't get it. What did he do?" Peter asked.

"I think he killed his father," Onua, who had just arrived, shared.

"That's him," Nathan whispered. The group turned their eyes to Thomas, in handcuffs, followed by Officer Tod and two other police officers, with Inspector Evans leading the way.

"Oh my, he's remarkably handsome," Maddy exclaimed, batting her eyelids.

"I'm uncertain he could have killed his father," Peter whispered.

"We apprehended him in an attempted escape," Nathan added.

They gazed at Thomas until he vanished from their sight.

"What's our course of action?" Officer Tod inquired as they reached Inspector Evans' office.

"We await Philip. I attempted to reach him, but he's unreachable," Inspector Evans responded.

"I demand to speak to my lawyer. There's no basis for cuffing me," Thomas retorted.

"Young man, you need to quiet down. If you weren't up to something, why attempt to escape?" Officer Tod admonished sternly.

"Who said I was escaping? Just let me talk to my lawyer," Thomas replied.

"Take him to the interrogation room until Philip arrives; he's the one who needs to handle this, not us," Inspector Evans instructed the two officers who had accompanied them.

Back at the hospital, Detective Philip had remained by Tasmina's side for approximately two hours. Upon Tasmina's arrival, she learned about her sister's coma and promptly informed her mother, who was en route to Accra.

Upon waiting for a while Detective Philip decided to leave.

"I need to check on your brother, Tasmin. You should get some rest," Detective Philip suggested.

"I'll be okay. Don't worry about me," Tasmina replied softly. Philip felt uneasy leaving her alone, so he requested Yaw to stay with her and notify him if anything occurred. With that, he departed from the hospital and made his way to the police building.

As Detective Philip entered the police building, he headed straight to Inspector Evans' office.

"What's going on, Philip? Why was he escaping, and where were you?" Inspector Evans inquired upon Philip's arrival.

"Where is he, Evans?" Detective Philip asked, cutting to the chase.

"He's in the interrogation room," Inspector Evans replied. Philip nodded in acknowledgment and proceeded to the room, where Thomas, still handcuffed, wore a frown.

Inspector Evans followed him but stayed outside the room, attentive to whatever conversation might unfold between Detective Philip and Thomas. The air in the room held a tense anticipation as the detective prepared to address the unfolding situation.

"You have to let me go; you have nothing against me. This is illegal!" Thomas barked as Detective Philip took his seat.

"So is almost killing your sister, Thomas. If arresting you is illegal, why don't we say I've arrested you based on an attempted murder, huh?" Philip countered.

Thomas breathed in and out to calm himself; he knew he had no way out of this.

"Listen, she didn't die, right? She was just knocked out," Thomas insisted.

Detective Philip chuckled, "AN ATTEMPTED MURDER, Thomas. Didn't you catch that?"

"Now, answer me. I know you're involved in your father's death, Thomas. In order to end this whole drama, why don't you confess?" Philip said with a sly smile.

"I'm not talking until I talk to my lawyer," Thomas asserted.

"Alright then, I'll throw you in prison until your lawyer gets ready," Philip declared, standing up to leave.

"You can't throw me in prison; I have to talk to my lawyer. I haven't done anything," Thomas protested.

"I'm putting you there on an attempted murder charge, Thomas. I'll be available when you're ready to talk," Philip said as he left the room, passing Inspector Evans standing outside.

Philip exited the police building, intending to get some rest. Before doing so, he called Yaw to check on Tasmina.
