If Daisy hadn't left me here all alone, I would have made sure she knew her worth. It would've been the brightest of mornings. Heaven would be smiling at its competitor on earth as her presence would've made this netherworld divine. My heart broke at the imagination of what could've been.
As Daisy walked into class, the room felt less lonely, as if all the company I would ever need was right in front of me. For the first time in months, she didn't go directly to her seat. I watched how her steps closed into mine and we faced the warmth in each other's smile. Time flew by quickly as I watched the first hello turn into a big hug. "Hey Neil. I was up thinking about you all night. Do you mind if I sit next to you?" Her words struck my ear like a bolt of lightning. Suddenly, I was starring in a 90's movie and the hero had finally gotten the girl. I nodded eagerly, inviting in the destiny that was waiting at my door.
The warmth of her pinky finger as it gushed against mine while we took down notes gave the feeling of a soft woolen jacket in the harsh winter mornings. Every touch of her hand against mine gave me an uncontrollable jitter in my body. It felt as if she was almost doing it on purpose, waiting for my cheeks to turn red. I held strong while Sammy rolled her eyes at our cheesiness. Daisy held a composed outlook but, on the inside, she was titillated. She knew just how to press my buttons.
As the class ended, I felt myself drawn towards Daisy's every move. "Hey, do you want to get something to eat?", I asked her. Her immediate replies were my favorite thing. We jilted towards the cafeteria, hand in hand, and for the first time, I felt like I belonged here. As we shared the straw, we left a tiny sip for the other as if it were a competition on who got to drink more, except we both wanted to let the other win. Our knees glided against each other like two snowballs colliding and becoming one. The layered strands of her hair had finally found the man who could put them in their place. Our sync was tremendous. The day ended without any bouts of misery.
I was certain of the fact that once I got my Daisy, I had to find someone for Sammy. I didn't have the heart to watch Sammy feel left out after all she had done for me to get here. She had been a great friend, but above that, she was also a great pillar towards my goal. Even though she always found a way to torture me with her sarcasm, she was the funniest person I had ever met. Before a cold war began between Sammy and Daisy over me, I had to make things right.
The study date from our original plan finally took place. Sammy was awkwardly third-wheeling to the wonder couple- Daisy and I. "Hello ladies. I wanted to properly introduce you to each other. This is Sammy, my best friend, my protector, my partner in crime, my mother-figure and the only person who helped me survive a month here. She is going to kill me for embarrassing her with such sweet words but the occasion calls for some sweetness. Here we have Daisy, my- well we haven't quite put a word on it but Daisy is the most beautiful lady I ever laid my eyes upon. She has an angelic soul. I never thought I would be saying this in front of her but here we are, sipping coffee and reading a bunch of books together. Daisy is my dream come true. I want the two most important and intelligent women I know to befriend each other. I know you have your group Daisy and that's fine by me, but Sammy is all I have and I want to share her with you." I felt as if I had delivered a speech in front of the President. The pressure I had built up on Daisy and Sammy was starting to affect me. Their expressions didn't look too pleased but they were prepared for anything when it came to me.
Sammy was quiet for a while. She quietly muttered, "Daisy, you are quite the topic in our group. I should probably welcome you with garlands for your greatness. All this time, I have only had one person to talk to, Neil. My heart aches that he wants to share me with you. In all honesty, when I decided to set you two up, I didn't think of the consequences. I had no intention of having to share my friend but here we are. You seem like a great girl and I apologize for my sarcasm earlier. It is going to take a while for me to adjust with our new situation but I guess anything for Neil, right?" Daisy was red with embarrassment. I had never seen her look so weary. She stood up and cried, "Samantha, I really look forward to being your friend. I am sorry if I intervened. I thought Neil liked me and I jumped at the opportunity. I am so sorry." With the blink of an eye, my dream was leaving right in front of me.
"Stop! Don't go." I screamed. Sammy asked me what was wrong. Reality sucked more. Daisy was gone forever. All the searching and interrogations had left me exhausted and I had fallen asleep. This strangest dream left me with a question- would anything be much different if Daisy hadn't left? My dream showed me that no matter what happened, Daisy could probably have never been mine. The probability of what would've been coincided with the reality of what was.
After class, Sammy knew I had dreamt something weird as I kept my distance with her. Eventually, I spilled the beans and told her all about the nightmare I had had. Sammy immediately had a lot to say. "Are you crazy? First of all, you made me sound like a creep in that dream and I am too cool for that. I would never say anything to your Daisy because I know how much she means to you. She seems like a good enough person and it is about time I had a girl-friend. All my sarcasm is reserved for you buddy. Don't worry we will find her and eventually the really cheesy first part of your dream will be fulfilled. Of course, I will be there to roll my eyes when it happens." She laughed as she punched my shoulder, cheering me up. Knowing the possibility of a future with Daisy was reassuring and peaceful. Somehow, Sammy had saved me from the pit of what would've been and pulled me back to the reality of finding out what actually happened. Mission Daisy was on its way.
