Chapter 8 - Self-Taught Enchanter

It was around this point that all idea of these years being an absurdly long dream had begun to vanish from my mind in the truest sense. I, Rhine El Varn am the 88th child and 35th son of Geralt el Varn, the Viscount of Varn who coincidentally rules over the city of Varn. I had just spent around an hour trying to make sense out of the book on Enchanting that my potential teacher had sent me currently had me stumped over the parts that make up the Enchantments at the very core. Those core components are known as runes and from what the book I had been sent explained I had summarized it to be a manipulation of the laws of the world. That itself was what confused me the most especially since this world had no mention of the wuxia like cultivators to my knowledge. Trudging out of my room I stopped by to visit my mother Haruka who had mostly taught me how to use magic.

"Mama, I don't understand this law of the world stuff. I can cast fire magic just fine, but I can't figure out the runes. Do you have any idea Mama?" Haruka had a somewhat pained and pondering expression on her face for a bit. "Rhine don't think about that law of the world stuff that book is telling you, and don't think about trying to make a rune in particular. Hmmm, I know you have a great imagination and talent for magic. Why don't you think about casting a fireball spell in your mind, but maybe draw it out on a scroll instead?" I put a hand to my rather adorable chin in contemplation and gave a nod rushing off with a smile as I returned to my room quickly grabbing numerous empty scrolls. I thought about the fireball spell itself imagining a fireball the size of a nickle and when I grabbed a brush that I dipped into ink, the moment I set it atop the scroll it was as if shivers were running through my body. I yielded to the odd sensation letting my body move on autopilot as a magic circle was slowly taking form on the scroll. Once the magic circle had been drawn into completion I heard a rather familiar ding I had almost gotten used to hearing.

[Congratulations on the creation of your first crude scroll! No experience rewarded.]

I set down my brush letting it soak in the ink for a while thinking on what might have gone wrong. Maybe it was the size I limited? Maybe I should have thought about what those tingles were trying to transmit to me and then following along with it? I decided for my next attempt I would put it at the generally normal size of the first of the caster and instead of firing off the spell I would draw the circle that appears in my mind.

Setting the brush against the scroll once more I felt the tingles closing my eyes for a second getting a vivid image of the magic circle for the fireball spell as I started at the base trying to keep my nearly trembling hand as steady as possible which was only possible due to my abnormally high dexterity. Once the intricate circle had been drawn to completion I heard the ding once more and this time I thought my jaw was going to drop.

[You have created your first Steel scroll! 10% XP rewarded.]

I took a deep breath after reading that notification over a few times and recalling the time that my mother had told me about the quality of scrolls. A crude scroll would be comparable to the fireball of an apprentice mage, A porcelain scroll would compare to the fireball of a novice mage who would qualify as an F-rank adventurer or a soldier in training, Bronze would be the equivalent of a D-rank, Iron a C-rank, Steel a B-rank, Silver an A-rank, Gold an S-rank, and anything above was all the subject of myths and rumors. Around C-Rank was the time when an Adventurer could live a relatively comfortable lives with some actual profit in an average town. While the scroll hadn't been properly appraised I had confidence that my system wouldn't have been wrong or if it was it would likely be rated higher than what the system had given it. I shook the cold sweat that had almost turned into real sweat off and when I looked back at the book I had been given, the law of the world became something I equated with proper visualization something I'm assuming had been forgotten from common knowledge at some point and been giving an obscure explanation because of it.

Wanting to gauge what my mother thought I brought it over to her and she shook her head and only mentioned for me to seek out my Father and that I did with a few soft knocks to the door of his office. Not even a second later I quickly sidestepped away from the direct path of the door as it slammed open leaving a small hole in the wall from where the knob bashed into it. "My boy! What do you want to play today? Maybe I can finally teach you how to wield a blade? Or maybe you wish for me to read to you ...." I couldn't find the slightest chance to open my mouth as a torrent of words spilled out of Geralt's mouth almost making him seem like an inexperienced older father for some time until it finally came to an end. "Father I made a scroll! Can you get checked it out for me?" The jovial attitude faded in an instant from my Father's face as he took the scroll from me, asking me to make a few more if I can with Siena watching over me if at all possible. "Big Sis Siena? Not Mina or Mama?" Geralt gave a nod and practically pushed me out of the office after whistling and it almost seemed as if Siena materialized out of nothing right in front of the office door.

My feet quickly left the ground as I was pulled up into a hug and a rather tight grip on my body. "Big Sis?" Siena didn't even offer an answer to my question as she took me back to my room in complete silence not even continuing her standard practice of doting on me. It was only after the door to my room had been closed that she had broken her silence. "Rhine, promise me you won't enchant any scrolls or anything unless I or Father am watching over you. Can you promise your Big Sis that?" I rapidly blinked my eyes failing to understand the request or why Siena had such a grave expression that was marring her otherwise beautiful face. "A-alright I promise I will wait for you to watch." Siena beamed at that and instantly launching into her doting barrage as well as a flurry of kisses to my cheek which had me squirming around trying to dodge and having no success at all even when I had started to use fire magic to make a wall to surround myself. The flames would be snuffed out once they made contact with Siena. After around five minutes and having spent half of my mana on the failed endeavor I started to pump out scrolls and within three hours of enchanting, having gotten meals in between I could feel myself begin to grow tired.

"Siiisss- I'm allll doooonnnee." I head a laugh at that as Siena prepared my bed and with just waving her hands a few times managed to swap my clothes out for my pajamas, tuck me in and give me a kiss on the forehead as she closed the door to my room taking the five scrolls I had made being four steel qualities and one silver scroll. Her destination was my father's office though anything that might have been discussed or planned I head nothing of having drifted off to sleep.

It was a few days after the fact that I was told by my father with a sad looking Haruka and Siena, that my potential Enchanting teacher had left Varn with his family. Mina looked like she was about to faint and was almost to the point of prostrating to me. Something about the way Father and Big Sis looked down at me seemed like they were awfully worried. "Please forgive me Master Rhine! I'll contact my father right away and have him arrange for a new teacher!" My father shook his head and whispered some things to Mina who slowly nodded and the four of them left the room telling me to not leave my room under any circumstance.

It was that same night when many robed figures would be meeting in the town of Luin and one of the robed figures got a report by a pigeon and crumpled the paper in front of the other robed figures. The expression on his face was outright malevolent as he gave out his instructions gritting his teeth to the point where they almost might break.
