As they arrived at the hospital, Caleb's phone pierced the moment with its shrill ring. He excused himself, gesturing for Esme to proceed. "I need to take this call," he said. "You go first."
His demeanor suddenly tense as he glanced at the number. As soon as Esme entered the ward, Caleb walked away and answered the call. His face contorted with disbelief as the voice on the other end relayed grim news.
"Dead?" Caleb's voice cracked with incredulity, his mind grappling with the abrupt turn of events. How could someone die in jail?" He couldn't believe the driver who had hit Adelynn was already dead.
"He committed suicide by cutting his own wrist," the officer informed.
"Fuck," he cursed under his breath. Frustration was etched into his expression. "Okay, I am coming." Ending the call, he bolted from the hospital, urgency propelling him back into the fray.
