It was late at night. Esme finally prepared to sleep after putting Ellie to sleep. But the sudden buzzing of her phone broke through the silence, making her open her eyes.
Reaching for it on the nightstand, she checked the screen, her fatigue momentarily forgotten when she saw Silas's name flashing. A smile tugged at her lips as she answered the call.
"Hello," she said softly, expecting his usual sweet banter.
But instead of his usual tone, Silas's voice was strained, breathless. "Esme! Can you come help me? I'm hanging on your balcony. My hand is slipping. Be quick."
Esme's smile disappeared all of a sudden. She was shocked and astounded at the same time. Without wasting a second, she jumped out of bed and rushed out to the balcony, dropping the phone on the bed.
