Sharp snarls and short grunts could be heard from above as the wendigo hopped from tree to tree as though it were celebrating killing Roy.
Under Alexander's arm, Hailey heard what had transpired and grew curious, not completely understanding what had happened. She peeked out her head slightly to see. As she looked around she saw the body. Roy's lifeless body, her pupil shrunk in horror, she gasped sharply, and her breathing became erratic. Panting wildly, almost hyperventilating she was in shock. She whimpered, "He's..he's.." she couldn't even get the words out.
Alexander knowing what she had seen, understood her reaction but knew the importance of silence in that moment. He moved his hand to cover her mouth to prevent her from making any more sounds that could attract the ire of the wendigo.
Still lying on the ground he pulled her in close, his hand still covering her mouth. Gently repeating to her in quiet whispers, "It's okay. It's okay... It's okay. Everything is okay... It's alright." Trying his best to calm her.
His other hand stayed on Ben's head in case he too should get a little curious and try to look around and see Roy's dead body.
A groan to his left, ahead temporarily drew Alexander's attention.
"Mmmghh" Dean groaned, massaging his head as he slowly sat up. His head, ringing. He had likely hit his head when he was knocked out of the way by the wendigo.
"Sam?" He called sluggishly as he slowly and weakly rose to his feet. Seemly unaware that the snarling attacker was still present, circling them from above.
And being the first to rise placed him in the creature's sight.
"Sam?" Dean called again to his brother who was lying unconscious a short distance opposite him.
He drunkenly approached Sam, "Sam, get up?" still concussed. His head still ringing.
"Sam," Dean called again. This time Sam seemed to hear his call. His eyes fluttered open weakly and he groaned sluggishly.
As Dean approached the now waking Sam he stepped on a familiar long brown shaft, which drew his attention, "Roy?" He called. At that moment he remembered that the were other members of the group, perhaps it was because he feared the worst or because he had seen movement from his brother, confirming Sam was okay.
"Sam...what.. happened to Roy." He asked confused looking around. Only to spot the lifeless body of Roy behind, his head bent in an impossible direction, a small bleeding gruesome gaping hole in his chest, showing ribs and lungs.
"Oh, Roy." Looking down he sighed sadly, unaware of the creeping scrapes descending in.
The ringing was subsiding, he could almost hear his name being called "Bean... hurt hound." He believed he heard. Confused he turned to the source and spotted Alexander, Hailey, and Ben on the ground. More importantly, Alexander was frantically yet hushly shouting something at him, "Dean...bet drown."
Doing his best to fight the ringing, Dean tried to make sense of what Alexander was saying "Huh?" He questioned.
By now Sam was awake, sitting up. Still a little groggy but lucid enough to hear. Alexander's desperate warnings immediately fall into his ears. His pupils shrunk in fear, his head snapped to his brother, Dean. His eyes widened. "DEAN GET DOWN!!!!" He shouted with fearful urgency.
Dean hearing Sam's loud cry, heed his brother's warning and quickly dove from where he stood unfortunately for him the wendigo very close behind. Mid dive, before Dean could even reach the ground his shirt was grabbed, and he was yanked back slamming heavily into a nearby tree, knocking him out. Right after the wendigo grabbed him and ran up the tree, swiftly maneuvering from tree to tree and disappearing with him into the distance.
Sam hastily got up, "DEAN!!!!" He cried.
"DEAN!!!" Cried Sam again.
While Sam screamed for his brother, Alexander who had seen what happened slowly got off the ground knowing it was not safe. Helping Hailey and her brother up all the while trying his best to prevent them from looking at Roy's body, "Look at me. Keep your eyes on me." He repeated continuously. He then slowly led them by hand away from the body to a safe location.
Although Hailey had calmed down a bit, she was still tense and a little stiff from shock. Ben too showed signs of shock, Alexander may have stopped him from seeing anything but he couldn't stop him from hearing. Ben was trembling, he didn't know much be he could piece together bits of what was happening.
"Wait, here I will go get Sam so we can figure out what to do next." He explained gently. Giving the two a gentle rub on the arm, "Everything is going to be alright." He reassured before heading off.
He then hastily yet carefully approached the distraught Sam.
"Sam." He called only to be ignored. Sam continued calling for his brother.
"Sam" He approached. Again he was ignored.
"Sam." Alexander tapped his shoulder. "What?!" Sam turned shouting angrily at him.
Alexander backed up lifting his hands as a gesture of surrender. "Woah, woah... I mean no harm."
"No harm?" Sam grunted. "No harm?! My brother what taken cause of you." He accused, pointing at Alexander angrily.
"What?" Asked unsure of how exactly this was his fault.
Shaking his questions to the back of his mind. "You and I both know you're not going to get your brother back standing in the forest shouting. So how about we get Hailey and her brother back to the campsite, for now?" He proposed.
Sam turned his back to him in an attempt to ignore him. Seeing this Alexander reasoned. "Look I understand for some reason you don't like me, but at the very least let's get Hailey and Ben to safety." He indicated to where they were waiting.
Sam looked to where he pointed and saw the trembling siblings hugging each other for comfort, his face fell in pity."They trying to keep it together but they're scared." Alexander added.
Sam groaned, both frustrated and irritated. "Sam," Alexander called in concern.
Sam sighed heavily, "Fine."
"Thank you, Sam." Alexander thanked gratefully.
---------
With Sam's help, Alexander successfully led the group back to the campsite. The sun was low, it would be setting soon. Alexander helped Hailey and her brother inside the warded area Sam and Dean had created earlier. Although, they were still rattled they had calmed down quite a bit during the walk back. They were not doing much better.
Sitting them down, Alexander got down to their level. "Hailey, Ben." He called for their attention, "I have a plan. If it works we might be able to find your brother and his friends..." He stopped to gather his breath, "but if it doesn't work, I might not be coming back."
Hailey reflexively grabbed him afraid he would leave. He gently caressed her hand, " It's alright, I've got this." He assured with a confident smile.
"I just need you guys to stay in the wards till I get back. Do not leave the wards under any circumstances." He warned before turning to address Ben, "Ben, you've been doing a great job. I'm so proud. But I'm going to need you to hold on for a little longer, okay?" He praised.
Ben hesitantly nodded his head.
"If I don't come back before sundown. Leave with Sam." Alexander said solemnly.
Standing outside the wardings Sam impatiently informed, "Alright you guys should be safe in the warding for a while." Then turned to leave, "I'm going to look what my brother, now."
"Trust me guys. I'll be back." Alexander smiled reassuringly before getting up.
"Sam." He called.
"What?!" Sam asked impatiently, "What do you what now?"
"Can I talk with you for a minute?" Alexander asked.
"I don't have time I have to go search for Dean before sundown," Sam explained exasperately.
Alexander approached "Please, I'll be real quick."
"Okay, what is it?" Sam turned to him.
"I have a plan, but I need your help to pull it off," Alexander informed.
"You have a plan? You?" replied, skeptical, "Do you even know what that thing is?" He asked before condescendingly adding "Why don't you just stay here and let me handle things."
Alexander shook his head, "No Sam, I have a plan I just need you to-
Alexander suddenly stopped talking as though he were frozen.
Sam's brows rose in confusion at Alexander's behavior, he was talking then he suddenly stopped? "You need me to what?" Sam asked only for Alexander to shush him.
"Listen," Alexander said.
Alexander stood in place, his head slowly tilting and angling. His face twisted and tightened with worry, stress, and a hint of fear.
"It's here." He said ominously.
"What's here?" asked Sam but Alexander didn't answer.
'Fuck. I didn't get any time. It's now or death.' Alexander just suddenly grabbed Sam's wrist tightly and requested desperately, "Please, look after them."
After his words without waiting for Sam's responses, Alexander immediately bolted into the forest from where they had just come.
"What...wait?!" Sam called.
Right after Alexander dashed into the forest, Sam heard a heavy thud and the crunch of branches and leaves from above. He looked up to spot the fleeting shadow of a large creature heading in the direction Alexander run.
"Alexander!! Alexander!!" Yelled Sam angrily.
He tried to give chase but as just as he did he stopped in his tracks and then turned around to find Hailey and Ben sitting in the warded area.
"Aaagh" He groaned. "Damnit." Sam stomped his foot. Turning around and urgently running to the siblings. "Hurry get up. We have to go now." He said.
"What?"
"We don't have time for this. Do you want to find your brother? Then let go." Sam yelled.
"No." Said Hailey.
