Hannah's POV
I opened the door to my father's office and saw him discussing with a male figure who sat opposite him. The male figure was draped in a crisp blue suit. "Guess, I'll come back," I whispered.
"Oh Hannah, please come in," my father invited.
"Okay," I walked in and stood next to my father.
"Daughter, I want you to meet Stefan," my father introduced. "Stefan Adolf. He is a very important figure in our company."
I raised my eyebrows as I realized the male figure was my coursemate in college. I extended my right hand and said, "Stefan, where have you been?"
Stefan stood to his feet, shook my hand, and answered, "Argentina." Leaving my hand, he returned to his seat and complimented me, "You look beautiful as always."
"Oh, thank you," I smiled.
"You both know each other?" My father asked.
"Yeah, we went to the same college," I answered. "Stefan and I were in the same department."
"Oh," my father raised his eyebrow. "Here, I was trying to explain everything to you. I guess that would be unnecessary. Stefan, my daughter is currently the chief executive officer of our tech division. Her mother retired."
"Well, I'm sure that division is in good hands," Stefan turned and glanced at the exit. He added, "I will leave you both to it. I need to take myself on a private tour." He stood to his feet.
"You might get lost," my father teased.
"I'll just use Google map," Stefan retorted, taking his leave afterward.
I sat on the next seat opposite my father and said, "What's your business with Stefan Adolf, Dad?"
My father cleared his throat and answered, "That young man is as significant as a remote to a television. He holds a very important position in the company." He took his pen and continued, "I believe you want me to sign something?"
I handed over the document to my father while he placed his signature afterward.
I caught sight of Stefan, who was in the corridor staring through the tempered glass. He seemed mesmerized by the city's view from the skyscraper. Trying to avoid unnecessary conversations, I tried to quietly enter the elevator but unfortunately, he joined me.
"I presume you didn't see me," He glanced at me before fixing his gaze on his Oxfords.
I clicked the button to the fifth floor and watched the elevator door close. I hissed and said, "Mind me not. Anytime I'm at work, I'm always so absent-minded about my environment."
"Who would have thought that Hannah Davidson would be leading a division of one of the largest companies on the planet? I thought so. I always knew you were destined for greatness."
I faked a smile.
"When do you close?"
"Five p.m. or whenever I please."
"Mind if I pick you up to go take a drink when you close? I'm sure you must have been exhausted by then."
Unable to resist his proposal, I responded, "That would be great. I will see you at five p.m."
When the elevator reached my destination floor, it dinged, and I quickly rushed out, sighing afterward.
At five p.m., I rushed to the garage with my black purse and a file of documents, trying again to avoid Stefan. As I placed my file in my car, I heard someone say, "Hey." Shocked, I turned back and said, "Jesus! You scared me."
It was Stefan. Seems he had been waiting in the garage for me all this time. "Can we go?" He asked.
"Yes," I grinned, regretting I let Philip have a day off.
It was typical of Stefan to extravagantly spend money, so I wasn't surprised when he let us have a bottle of high-end Bordeaux wine in one of the most expensive restaurants in town.
"So, how has New York been?" Stefan began.
"Busy, as always. Nothing much has changed," I answered. "Argentina?"
"Wine? We drink a lot of wine there."
"Doesn't that bother you? I mean, diabetes."
"I mean, we don't only take wine there. We dance tango, speak Spanish, and visit wildlife," he sipped his wine.
"Well, it doesn't sound boring to me."
"Do you still make contact with everyone else?"
"Only a few. Many are just trying to climb the corporate ladder and make a name for themselves now."
Stefan cleared his throat and said, "Let me tell you a bit about Argentina."
Stefan's words sounded indistinct in my ears. All I longed for was to lay my back on my soft bed.
He has always been like this - spending money and trying to get to me. When I rejected his proposal in college, I didn't see him anymore. Rumors had it that he took a transfer to another college. I only wondered what he was doing back in New York.
Three hours later, Stefan and I got to my home in his car. "Thank you for hanging out with me tonight. It means a lot to me," Stefan said.
"Thanks for the drink," I replied.
"Can we do this some other time?"
"Maybe. If my work gives me enough time."
"Oh, it will when King Stefan is around."
I chuckled and bade, "Good night, Stefan." I opened the car door afterward.
"Goodnight, beautiful."
I alighted from the vehicle and waved as Stefan zoomed off with his Lamborghini Huracan. I took a deep sigh and began my journey to the main entrance. When I reached the living room, it was dark. I switched on the light and caught sight of my husband, sitting on a couch. He was draped in a white T-shirt and a black knickerbocker. He had his gaze fixated on the ground.
"Where have you been?" He questioned.
"Out with a friend," I made my way to the staircase.
"That wasn't the question?"
"What else do you expect?" I yelled. "There's no love or peace in this house so what makes you think I won't find some peace somewhere else?" I hissed and stormed off to my room.
