Aunt Elvie's concerned voice floated through the phone, breaking Marley's silence. "Darling, what's going on? You suddenly became quiet." The tender worry in her tone tugged at Marley's heart.
Marley glanced at Dane, who was standing in front of her with a questioning look. His piercing eyes seemed to see straight through her, making her feel exposed and vulnerable. She knew she couldn't reveal what was really happening, not over the phone.
"Uh, Aunt Elvie, my phone's battery is running low," Marley lied, her voice catching slightly. "I promise I'll tell you everything once you get back home, okay?" With that, she quickly ended the call, her heart pounding in her chest.
