Chapter 92 - Chapter 14: A Glimpse at the Future: Dark Omen

"Superman, go; I've got this!" the hero assured over their comms. Brainiac had returned with a series drone army. The League was being tested in ways they hadn't in years… since the invasion. He suppressed the negativity associated with that day. While the League could focus on the robots, he would be otherwise engaged. As he opened his senses he could feel the signs of life, hear their distress.

An executive tower not fully evacuated and having sustained structural damage. The building wouldn't last long so there was no time to delay. Focusing on the metal wings on the back of his synthetic armor, he sent the individual "feathers" to everyone he sensed. Sharper than any knives, they cut through stone and broke glass but harmed none of the people they were sent to help. As soon as the feathers attached he teleported them to safety.

The hero performed a desperation barrel roll as he turned a corner. He could hear the building collapsing behind him but had more pressing concerns as his rescue caught the attention of a cluster of droids. He dipped and dodged the blaster fire, his speed and maneuverability increasing as his feathers returned. But it was only when he saw a half dozen steel beams coming toward him did he realize he'd fallen for a trap.

"Agh," he yelled as he reduced the beams to sand and then reshaped them into spikes. Spikes that found themselves piercing the bots in front of him. He turned to those pursuing from behind and unsheathed his katana. The red slits of his visor lit up as his sword became cloaked in an ethereal blue. He rushed them, his superior speed allowing him to close the distance in a fraction of a second. He sheathed his blade just as the metal enemies exploded behind him. He opened his senses once more, taking not a moment to savor his victory, he still had people to save.

It would be another hour before the androids were defeated. He avoided combat when he could but was still pulled into several skirmishes. There was a good deal of property damage but he hadn't failed to save a single person within range of his perception. All in all, a good day.

"Omen, report to the Hall of Justice," he heard over his comm. He sighed, he wanted to go home but this was likely important so without delay he zoomed to the superhero headquarters. Upon arrival, he willed his wings away and walked at a sedate pace. He could see a lot of heroes were in attendance and it struck him as odd. Having this many on the Watchtower was one thing but the Hall of Justice was more an embassy, a place where world governments could easily find and communicate with heroes. Although, he didn't spend a great amount of time here so maybe his experiences were unduly biasing him. He continued inside but was soon stopped, as was his heart.

"Omen, it is so good to see you," Wonder Woman greeted with a perfect smile and pants that looked painted on.

"Oh.. um, yes. See you too… I mean, good to see you, as well, Wonder Woman," if he weren't fully covered from head to toe he'd feel even lamer than he already did. Why couldn't his tongue work around her? She laughed and it made butterflies appear in his stomach.

"No need to be nervous, this is a good thing. And I've told you a dozen times, call me Diana" she said.

'A good thing?' he thought to himself but wouldn't get a chance to ask her as someone came to bail him out/ruin the moment.

"I'll take our wayward ninja to the main hall, Wonder Woman," Static said as he patted the shorter male on his shoulders. His booming laugh, nowhere near as nice as hers, was triggered by Omen's sagging shoulders. It must have looked weird, such unrefined body language in sleek full body armor. But he didn't care.

"Ok, see you soon," she bid as Static corralled him to the primary meeting room. As they moved about, the duo picked up another companion.

"Why does Omen look like someone stole his last pancake?" Cyborg asked as he seamlessly matched their stride.

"Oh, someone had an exchange with our resident Warrior Princess," Static said. "It did not go well. It seems our young prodigy's talents do not extend to romance."

"Hahahaha," Cyborg laughed. "I know you're a flyboy but you gotta come down to earth, man. Or, I could put in a good word for you," the former titan teased.

"S-shut up, ya know!" Omen said as he increased his pace, in no mood for any more teasing from those two. The laughing stopped when the trio entered the main hall, Static and Cyborg taking seats at the oblong table. Seated at the head, Superman, his white cape visibly overflowing from the chair. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash and even a tense Batman were present.

"Omen," Superman began, "In acknowledgement of your many heroic deeds; in your quest to protect the innocent the Justice League would like to extend you an offer of membership. What say you?"

He'd worked for this day for so long but was shocked it came so early. At seventeen, he'd be the youngest member to ever join as Captain Marvel didn't count. He was even more surprised by how firm he sounded when he answered, "I accept." There was a round of applause and all the heroes not in the hall joined in on the celebration.

Hours later on the observation deck, Omen joined Superman. "Ooff," he exhaled when the Kryptonian bear hug of death got him. "Too tight, Uncle Clark," he said.

"Sorry," Clark apologized as he let the boy down. "Take that helmet off, we're alone now." Omen nodded and then touched a button on his helm. The protective wear phased into the suit to reveal a mop of red hair and two, dual, whiskered cheeks. "Your dad would be so proud of you, Toga, I know I am," Clark said. He'd meant to be cheerful but couldn't keep the melancholy out of his voice.

"I'd like to think he would, even with his opinion of heroes," Toga voiced.

"Your dad was complicated but when it mattered, when hell rained from the skies he was right there with us. And if I hadn't been so naive he'd still be here so he could tell you all of this himself."

"We're going to get him back, I believe that. I know I'm close to a breakthrough and as soon as we can open a door into the Phantom Zone, I'm going to free my father. Believe it!"
