Chapter 16 - 16: The Morning After

Nova didn't remember falling asleep, she woke up in the now familiar lavishly pink room, wearing nothing but a bathrobe. She stared at the ceiling and tried to remember what happened the night before, a high blush staining her cheeks when she did, embarrassment making her cover her face.

She couldn't believe that she had actually shared a kiss with Roan, whatever the circumstances around the kiss might have been. Then she proceeded to fall asleep in his arms, drunk on champagne.

Nova bit back a groan, he must think she was so loose, kissing another man the very day she broke off a relationship. Well, it didn't matter too much, they would soon go their separate ways, it was probably for the best that it happened soon.

She sat up and swung her feet off the bed, paying attention to the clothes she had on for the first time. Her dress was gone, as well as her jewelry, she had a hard time trying not to picture the image of how that had happened. Surely, Roan was too busy to bother with such menial tasks for someone like her, it was most likely a maid.

She glanced at the bedside table to check for the time, something else catching her eye. It was a piece of neatly folded paper and Nova reached for it wondering who it could be from, before she could even read the first word of the note, her gaze was drawn to the end where Roan's name was boldly and neatly written.

She had to sit down again, flattered that he had been thoughtful enough to leave her a note. In the note, he directed her to request breakfast and take the painkillers he had placed beside the note - Nova looked back at the table to see that he had indeed gotten painkillers for her.

She hadn't been completely wasted the night before so she didn't wake up hungover but a smile brightened her features at Roan's thoughtfulness, and the fact that he was worried about her well-being. He also mentioned the lunch they were to have that day in the note, letting her know that he would send a driver to pick her up.

Nova had almost forgotten about that with everything else that had happened, she was nervous and at the same time, she was eager for it. Although she knew better than to think about Roan that way, he was just so perfect and he treated her so well, she couldn't help but indulge. This couldn't go on for much longer though, at lunch, she would plainly state things as they were, she wasn't a freeloader and she couldn't keep living off him.

She carefully refolded the note and kept safely kept it away, needing to clean up before anything else. Not wanting to encounter another possibly rude maid, she decided to ring up her breakfast before heading to the bathroom.

This time, she didn't hold back from using the bathtub, her time was limited here after all, and it would be stupid of her to miss out on a chance like this. By the time she came out of the bathroom, her breakfast tray was already in the room just like she intended. She ate in silence, taking the painkillers afterward even though she didn't need to.

She rang up another maid to take away the tray, making sure to give the fireplace a wide berth and busy herself with something else while the maid took out the tray. She found her purse from the night before while she did this, it was placed on the dresser, as well as all of her jewelry.

Nova returned to the big bed after the maid left, holding the new phone Roan got for her, cozy in her pink bathrobe. She felt guilty about owning the phone, being given a place to stay was one thing but she didn't feel right about him buying a phone for her, she would have to return it when she was about to leave.

After staring at the blank screen for a while to sort out her thoughts, she switched on the phone, surprised to see that she had gotten a message, it was from Roan. It was a simple greeting but it made a smile appear on Nova's face before she could stop herself.

She wiped the expression off her face, putting the phone on the bedside table. Why was she acting like some lovesick teenager? Replying to his message would probably only bother him when he was so busy so it was best she just pretended like she couldn't see it.

Instead, she should start making plans about what she planned to do with her life from here on out, getting a job should be the first on her list. She had previously worked as an accountant in an insurance company but it had been over a year ago now that she quit although she had a lot of potential in the company…

Nova forced out a smile when she felt tears burn her eyes, it didn't matter though, she could always start from scratch. She would work hard to get to where she had been before and then she would surpass it and build a comfortable life for herself. Another relationship was out of the question, she would rather remain single for the rest of her life than trust another like she had trusted Levi.

With nothing else to distract herself from her swarming thoughts, Nova fell asleep again, waking up to a knock on the door. She sat up in a rush, glancing at the digital clock at her bedside table to see that it was well past noon - Just how long had she been sleeping?!

She quickly crossed the room to open the door, the fog of sleep still in her eyes. She didn't know what to expect when she opened the door but Lauren had been the very last person she expected to see.

"Hello, Miss Sutton," She greeted politely, holding her makeup box and another suit bag.

Nova blinked in surprise, both at Lauren's presence and what the other lady had called her. "Lauren?"

Lauren smiled, the expression nervous, "I'm flattered you remembered my name, Miss Sutton, and I apologize for interrupting your nap."
