Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Night

After they were all dead I tried to control my breath from how angry I was. I turned around and saw that Molly had a look of guilt on her face as she trembled. I walked over to her and started yelling. "Don't you realize we're in the middle of an apocalypse here?! You could have seriously died just now, do you understand that?! Get it through your damn head that you're only human! A great shot or not, I could've lost you forever!" She glared back at me and retaliated. "Stop acting like you care about me! I know that the only reason you like me is because you want to have sex!"

The offense that I took to that statement was outmatched. "What?!" Molly's eyes teared up even though she was angry. "Don't act dumb! Why else would you like me? You never once took the time to get to know me! The only thing you care about is that you're physically attracted to me! I'll tell you what, even if I was single there would be no way in hell that I would ever sleep with a psycho like you!" A volcano went off inside me all of a sudden and I cracked the cement as I slammed the wall behind her with my hand.

Her anger went away in an instant and she stared at me in fear as I screamed. "You're right!! I don't know a single thing about you!! I never put any effort into learning that your favorite flowers are daffodils because every time we passed them on missions you would always walk slower! I don't know that you're a tea fanatic, and nerd out about it every time someone even mentions the word! I don't know that you hate wearing dangly earrings because they irritate your neck! I don't know that you always wear your hair down because James likes it that way! I don't know that you're the one who leaves the cattle fence open so they can roam the settlement freely because you love animals! I don't know that you are excellent at origami! Or that your favorite food is nachos! Or that your favorite color is red! Or that you love the smell of lavender! Or that you won't listen to anything other than classical music! And most of all, I don't know that if I had come to you directly to try and get to know you, you wouldn't have let me because you're terrified of getting close to someone out of fear of losing someone else!"

I took a few breaths so I could attempt to calm myself down. "There is so much I don't know about you, it's ridiculous! Because the only possible way to get to know someone is talking to them, right?!" Her face was shocked as she stared into my eyes which had caught flames. There was a moment of silence before she forced herself to look away from me. "I'm sorry..." My anger softened after a few more breaths and I pulled her in to hug me. "Believe me when I say that I care about you." Molly then shakily put her arms around me and it was the best feeling I had ever felt. The only way I could describe it was by green, pink, and yellow light surrounding the places she touched.

I wanted her to touch me more, and forever. Her warmth enveloped my cold body and I pulled her closer. She didn't pull away which surprised me most. I assumed it was because we were both soaked and the wind started picking up. "...Why do you care about me?" Molly asked. Her voice was so soft and I tried my best to match her tone. "Well, up until this morning, I thought you were the only one who didn't think of me as a psycho." She gripped my shirt and pressed her forehead into my chest. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to call you that. I was just angry at you for lying to me." I sighed. "Still think I'm lying, eh? What do I have to do to convince you?"

She hesitated. "I'll only believe it if I see it. James and I have been through so much together. I know he wouldn't do something like that to me." I decided not to answer. I realized just how devastating finding out that James was cheating on her would be. If I remember correctly, I heard they've been together for at least four years. Yikes. I couldn't imagine how she had stayed with him for so long, but she obviously cared about him enough to. My only question now was that if she was so sure he was faithful, why was she doubting the relationship? I knew that I couldn't ask her that now and the growls of the undead started to grow louder around us.

"We should find a safe place," I said, holding her tighter. I didn't want to leave her touch but she would be in danger again if I didn't. I forced myself to let go of her and turn around to kneel on one knee. "Hop on my back. I'll get us somewhere else quick." She hesitated for a moment before wrapping her arms around my neck. "This is a platonic piggyback ride, mind you." I rolled my eyes as I stood up and tucked her legs under my arms. I then ran around the corner and maneuvered around zombies until we found a house that was already barricaded.

The windows were boarded up and there was a fence of spikes around the yard, but the door was open and stained with blood. Clearly, the barricades didn't hold the hoard back for long to leave any survivors. Even so, this was the most secure place on the island and perfect to hide in. We were able to get inside without any of the corpses noticing us, which provided a lower chance of getting attacked. After we were inside and blocked off all of the exits, Molly headed upstairs while I finished securing the first floor.

I closed the curtains on all of the windows even though they were already blocked off to prevent anything from seeing movement in the house. Some of the wooden planks were broken through, but I found some more to replace them that were lying on the floor along with a bucket of nails. After I was finished, the main floor was very dim even though it was daylight, and I followed Molly to see what she was up to on the second floor. When I reached the top of the staircase I saw that she was doing exactly what I had done and securing every door and window.

She jumped a little when she noticed me as if she thought that a zombie had gotten in. She relaxed when she saw that it was me and I shook my head. "Relax. Even if all of the zombies on this island got in, I'd still be able to kill every one of them before they got to you." She sighed and moved her wet hair out of her face. "I'm going to take a shower. You can use it after I'm done."
