Chapter 2 - The System and the New Life

[I hate to break it to you, Host, but this couldn't be more serious.]

Still skeptical, Mateus was caught off guard by the system's tone.

'Now it's sarcastic too!?'

Mateus felt a bit confused, but he couldn't deny it: hearing something after so long was a relief. Pausing to reflect, he almost got emotional thinking about it. He decided that acting negatively or pessimistically wouldn't help and concluded that, for now, listening to the system was his best option. After all, it was much better than the absolute silence of the void...

"Okay, okay. Since this is serious, could you please explain how this 'Super Lazy System' works?"

Mateus knew he needed information. 'Know your enemy and know yourself.' Even though the system might not exactly be an enemy, understanding it was crucial. If everything worked like in the stories, it would be more than an ally—it would be a partner for life.

[Glad you asked, Host!]

[The Super Lazy System operates a bit differently than its name suggests. After analyzing several candidates to awaken this system, you were deemed the most suitable. Congratulations!]

Despite the strange compliments and the suspicious way the system spoke, Mateus realized that he truly fit the bill.

The system explained directly: it sought people who had worked hard in their lives and rewarded them with the opportunity to rest and live a peaceful life. But how was this possible?

The answer was simple: through missions and actions that required effort, the system would grant rewards that would make the Host's life easier and more relaxing. It was a mutually beneficial cycle—at least in theory.

"And what kind of rewards are these?" Mateus asked, curious.

[These rewards include magical powers, like in the fantasy stories you've read in your world. As for the missions, you will be reincarnated in a new world. Periodically, I will provide you with details of missions that can be completed in that world or even others.]

'Reincarnated?'

'Other worlds?'

Although it was a lot to process at once, Mateus felt excited for the first time in a long while.

'Could I really live every otaku's dream!?'

With a growing smile, he asked more questions: "What kind of world will I be reincarnated in?"

"Can I choose any world I want?"

"Do the worlds from fictional works really exist?"

[Hold on, Host, one step at a time. To answer your questions: yes, you'll be reincarnated, and you can choose the world you want. As for the last question, the answer is also yes—there are countless worlds across the vast universes. The works you consider fiction are, in fact, real worlds.]

Relieved to realize the system was friendly, Mateus sighed. 'At least my system doesn't seem like the type to force its users...'

[We can't waste any more time, Host. Otherwise, you'll be consumed by the void! Quickly choose the world you wish to be reincarnated in.]

The urgency in the system's voice made Mateus realize the situation was more serious than he had thought.

"I still have many questions, but I'll save them for later. As for the world... I want to be reincarnated in the world of..."

It was as if he had been thrown through a window—Mateus woke up startled and agitated.

"Was that a dream?" Still confused, he wasn't sure if everything he had experienced was real. 'Honestly, it's absurd to think something like that could happen...'

As he tried to push the negative thoughts away, a voice echoed, bringing him back to reality.

[No, Host. That wasn't a dream.]

'Thank goodness it was all real!' Grateful to all the higher powers in the universe, Mateus was thrilled with his new life.

Feeling his body light, as if a massive weight had been lifted off his shoulders, he thought: 'What a joy it is not to feel back pain anymore… Studying too much takes its toll.'

Getting up, he stretched and looked around. The room was unfamiliar. When he found a mirror, he was shocked.

"Is that me?"

The reflection showed someone completely different. Messy black hair glistened naturally, matching deep brown eyes full of determination. His skin was clear and healthy, and his body—standing at 1.75m—had a confident posture and a lean yet well-defined build.

"Not bad, if I do say so myself."

Despite his new and unfamiliar appearance, Mateus asked the system: "Is this really me? It's totally different from what I used to look like."

[Don't worry, Host. You've been reincarnated. In this world, your name is Hikaru Tanabe. Would you like to import the previous memories of this body?]

Mateus hesitated. The idea of accessing someone else's memories was unsettling. He didn't know what he might find. 'Will this affect me? Could I lose myself in what I'm not?'

After a moment, he decided that understanding more about this new world was essential. Summoning his courage, he replied, "Yes, import the memories."
