Chapter 391 - Chapter 391: Tirisfal Council

When mentioning the Guardian of the Tirisfal Council, Medivh the Archmage, one must also discuss the origins of the Tirisfal Council and its relationship with the Kirin Tor.

It is well known that human magic initially derived from the high elves.

However, had it not been for the high elves finding themselves in dire straits during their war against the trolls, they would have never considered teaching magic to humans.

This reluctance was not merely due to elven possessiveness but stemmed from the dangers associated with the misuse of arcane magic.

The high elves were once the aristocrats of the Night Elf Empire millennia ago—known as the upper elves.

Just as Earth's continents once formed a single landmass, Pangaea, the continent of Azeroth was originally a unified whole.

Today, however, the continent has fractured into the Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor, Pandaria, Northrend, and numerous islands.

The cause of this division was not due to tectonic drift or geological activity, as on Earth, but rather an unforeseen catastrophe—an immense man-made disaster.

At that time, the upper elves resided near a lake known as the Well of Eternity. This lake was a wound created during the battles between the Old Gods and the Titans.

The wound was so severe that unstable arcane energies—the lifeblood of the Titans—burst forth from it, flooding the world.

The Well of Eternity was a remnant left behind after the Titans attempted to heal the wounds of Azeroth, and its arcane energies nourished the entire world.

Before the Night Elves emerged, the entirety of Azeroth was dominated by the trolls (the dragons were not a mortal race).

A group of trolls migrated to the Well of Eternity, where they were nourished by its waters, evolving into the Night Elves—this was the origin of the elves' exceptional aptitude for arcane magic.

In no time, the Night Elves mastered powerful magic and established a magnificent empire.

However, as they increasingly misused magic, the space surrounding the Well of Eternity grew fragile and unstable. Eventually, this instability attracted the Burning Legion's attention.

Ten thousand years ago, during the War of the Ancients, the Night Elves, the six-colored dragons (including the gold dragon not present in the original lore), and demigods (natural spirits) fought against the demons of the Burning Legion to protect Azeroth.

The war ended in a cataclysmic explosion—the Well of Eternity was detonated by magic, driving the demons away but leaving the continent of Azeroth shattered.

The upper elves, who had once misused magic, were exiled across the sea, becoming what we now know as the high elves.

Thus, high elves are well aware of the consequences of misusing magic, which is why they are so cautious about teaching it.

After the establishment of Dalaran, their concerns soon became reality—humans began to misuse arcane magic again, attracting the attention of demons.

Although there was no energy source like the Well of Eternity to sustain a massive portal, they managed to send small forces into Azeroth, causing chaos.

Upon noticing this, the elves warned the human mages, and soon a secret organization called the Tirisfal Council was established.

This organization chose the most powerful mage, and each member of the council infused part of their power into him. This mage, known as the Guardian, utilized this immense power to hunt the invading demons.

Meanwhile, the rulers of Dalaran became the Kirin Tor, a subordinate organization to the Tirisfal Council.

They ruled openly over Dalaran while also collecting powerful magic to strengthen the Tirisfal Council.

However, due to confidentiality, only a select few high-ranking members of the Kirin Tor knew of the Tirisfal Council's existence.

As time passed, the Guardian of the Tirisfal Council was passed down from generation to generation.

Each Guardian would transfer all their magical power to their successor, resulting in increasingly powerful Guardians.

By the time of Aegwynn, she possessed power comparable to that of a Guardian Dragon, but due to her selfishness, she used her vast magic to prolong her life indefinitely, leading to a rift with the Tirisfal Council.

Hundreds of years ago, during a hunt for demons, Aegwynn encountered the leader of the Burning Legion, the fallen Titan Sargeras.

Sargeras was once one of the Titans, a member of the Pantheon, possessing immense power.

However, he ultimately betrayed the Pantheon, forsaking order for chaos and establishing the Burning Legion.

Despite Sargeras's might, when he forcibly came to Azeroth, he was weakened and ultimately defeated by Aegwynn and the Guardian Dragons.

However, cunning as he was, he concealed his soul within Aegwynn's body.

Decades later, under pressure from the Tirisfal Council, Aegwynn was compelled to choose a successor.

Instead of recruiting an apprentice like her predecessors, she managed to acquire the seed of another mage and bore a child, endowing him with the power of the Guardian.

That child was Medivh.

Sargeras's plot was thus revealed; he lay in wait within Medivh's body, seeking to exert influence over him.

As the new Guardian, Medivh was undoubtedly the most powerful mage of his time and the protector of the Eastern Kingdoms, enjoying considerable prestige.

Yet, when he fell under Sargeras's control, almost all the mages of the Tirisfal Council died under "mysterious circumstances" due to his machinations.

This not only led to Medivh's loss of control but also granted complete independence to the Kirin Tor.

Perhaps due to the suspicious deaths of the Tirisfal Council mages, or perhaps coveting the knowledge and power that Medivh possessed, the Kirin Tor eventually chose to make Khadgar—whom they viewed as a troublemaker—Medivh's apprentice—who was, of course, also a spy.

Little did they know that this decision would ultimately lead to the exposure of Medivh—or rather, Sargeras's—secret plot.

This great Guardian was, in fact, the one who opened the Dark Portal, allowing the orcs from Draenor—puppets of the Burning Legion—into Azeroth.

In truth, Alaric had once considered replacing Khadgar to become Medivh's apprentice. After all, as the Guardian of the Tirisfal Council, Medivh was immensely wealthy!

As mentioned earlier, one of the responsibilities of the Kirin Tor was to gather magic for the Tirisfal Council. So where is all that magic now? Of course, it resides with the Guardian!

With the years of accumulation from the Tirisfal Council and the Guardian, it could be said that the knowledge, wealth, and library Medivh possessed might even surpass that of all Dalaran.

(The Tirisfal Council was established by the mages of Dalaran and Silvermoon, so whatever Dalaran had, the Tirisfal Council also possessed, but not necessarily vice versa).

With Alaric's talent and qualifications, becoming Medivh's apprentice would not be overly difficult.

This way, as long as he could discover Medivh's secrets like Khadgar did in the original story, then organize a group to take down Medivh, he could inherit the title of Guardian and claim all of his legacy.

Though Medivh was extraordinarily powerful, his consciousness remained, and he would still struggle against Sargeras's soul, leading to a lack of focus during battles.

In this regard, what Khadgar, an average mage in the original story, could accomplish, he had no reason to fail at.

However, in the end, he abandoned this plan and chose to follow the path of Dalaran. This was due to his fear of the Titans.

As beings at the pinnacle of this world, even if Sargeras had turned to magic and abandoned arcane, and was now merely a soul, Alaric still dared not underestimate his abilities.

He vividly recalled the unexpected encounter with the Titan projection.

If he were to become Sargeras's apprentice and spend a long time together, it was possible that Sargeras might discover something amiss about him.

However, even if he could not inherit Medivh's legacy as an apprentice, he could still play a part in taking down Medivh and share in the spoils.

While this plan wouldn't allow him to monopolize the legacy, the risks would be significantly reduced. Moreover, he still had some trump cards.

Having been in this era for quite some time, transformation magic was gradually spreading, and some acquaintances should be reaching out to him.
