Chapter 165 - Chapter 165: Late Night Talk (I)

The last glimmer of sunset vanished at the end of the high walls of Pentos, and the sky turned completely black.

The Dothraki returned to their camp, erecting walls and barricades facing Pentos.

Warriors were sharpening their weapons, preparing for the battle tomorrow; women and children were bundling arrows, each person performing their duty to prepare for the assault on Pentos.

Pentos was one of the nine Free Cities, located in the west of the Essos continent, near the Narrow Sea, facing the Seven Kingdoms from afar.

The wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys was held on the outskirts of Pentos, and Illyrio himself was one of the Magisters of Pentos.

When Khal Drogo's Khalasar arrived, other Magisters and citizens of Pentos were worried about the city's defenses.

They doubled the city guard, and after witnessing the arrival of the dragons, the city was immediately engulfed in fear.

Many citizens fled the city overnight, while the Magisters and soldiers continuously filled the city's water tanks and brought out huge ballistae from the warehouses to prevent the dragons from attacking the city.

At this moment, in Alaric's tent, he was half reclined on a chair, reading a book about the major noble families of Westeros, while Daenerys sat carefully beside him, earnestly watching his face.

Indeed, it was a very handsome face, and Daenerys had never seen anyone more handsome than him.

Although he was just a teenager, his intelligence and composure deeply attracted her. She gradually became engrossed, almost forgetting the purpose of her visit here.

Finally, the young boy put down the book and looked at her. "Why don't you sleep in your own tent? What brings you here to mine?"

He suddenly asked in a gentle tone, devoid of the cold cruelty of daylight and the solemnity of loud declarations.

Upon hearing his question, Daenerys immediately remembered why she had come. Her face flushed, but she gathered her courage and asked Alaric.

"Are you truly the messenger of the Dragon God? Has the Dragon God truly chosen me to be the queen of the Seven Kingdoms?"

As soon as she finished speaking, she felt that saying such words might appear disrespectful to the Dragon God, so she timidly shrank her neck.

Seeing her adorable expression, Alaric couldn't help but laugh. He composed himself and replied.

"If anyone else came to ask this question, I would unequivocally tell them that I am indeed the messenger of the Dragon God and punish them for their disrespect.

But it's you, so I will answer differently. The Dragon God and all that are merely lies fabricated by me."

"Lies? The Dragon God... is fake?" Daenerys covered her mouth in astonishment.

She never expected the person in front of her to fabricate such a colossal lie and deceive tens of thousands of people.

"Of course, it's fake," Alaric said shamelessly.

"To rule over ignorant people, exploiting faith is the best method, especially when I can truly perform miracles in front of them.

With the name of the Dragon God, we can easily control these forces and unite our people in future wars of unification, making our enemies feel uneasy, after all, the true god is on our side."

His words somewhat eased her mind.

Upon careful consideration, she realized that for someone who could transform from a dragon into a human and perform so many large-scale magics, fabricating miracles and establishing power through religion was indeed a good method.

However, since the Dragon God did not exist, her question became even bigger.

"So, what about me? Does that mean my destiny to become the queen of the Seven Kingdoms is also false?"

Looking at the girl's uncertain expression, Alaric gently smiled, took her trembling hands, and asked.

"What? Don't you believe I can lead you back to the Seven Kingdoms and place you on the Iron Throne?"

"No, it's not that," Daenerys said loudly, gaining courage from the warmth of his hands.

"Of course, I believe you have the ability. You are so powerful and wise, but what about me?

I am just a princess of a fallen kingdom, wandering in the Free Cities with my brother.

I haven't learned anything related to fighting, know nothing about military strategy, or how to govern a country.

Can someone like me undertake the task of ruling the Seven Kingdoms with your help?"
