Chapter 23 - A Turn Based Battle - Lady Luck vs The Dungeon Master!

Despite the remaining members of Team New York growing anxious after seeing Infinite barely make it out alive; there was one member who was willing to step up to the plate.

"I'll go next." Lady Luck stepped onto what remained of the stage, her golf club trailing behind her. As for why that was her weapon of choice, the answer was simply because it was her favorite sport.

Ky watched her closely, finding her mysterious, yet familiar. 'I wonder what her powers are. She's the only one I haven't figured out. Based on the whole gambling motif she's got going on with the cards and dice on her pants, I'd say it has something to do with chance.'

Lady Luck was one of the lower ranks on the team, despite that, she walked confidently to center stage as if this were a runway rather than a death match. Her opponent stepped forward, wearing a long coat and a fedora, along with thin shades over his eyes.

"This dude looks like he's from the Matrix." the Blur whispered. Infinite and Tempo nodded.

His hands remained in his pockets as he approached Lady Luck, he too looked confident.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we have a good one coming up next! Everyone make some noise for Lady Luck and the Dungeon Master."

"You must be Lady Luck. I've been waiting for you." The fedora-wearing Californian smirked, checking Lady Luck up and down. "Based on your outfit, you must have a chance-based ability like me, right?"

Lady Luck stood with her gold club behind her head, obnoxiously chewing her bubble gum and blowing bubbles. "Gee, what made you come up with that one genius? Was it the golf club?"

"A sarcastic one. I like that. My name is the Dungeon Master, but you can call me DM. Are you ready to play my game?"

Lady Luck frowned as if her gum had gone bitter. "Ew, like DnD? Lame. I'd rather just knock your teeth out with my driver if it's all the same to you."

"Well then." the DM placed his hands behind his back and leaned forward. "Go for it."

Lady Luck stared at him for a second, still chewing her gum as obnoxiously as possible. 'This feels like bait, but I love taking chances.'

With a textbook swing, Lady Luck struck the DM's chin with her golf club, however, her attack did literally zero damage; she could even see a big fat zero emanating off of his face after the attack.

[0 Damage]

The DM laughed before pulling out a twenty-sided die from his pocket, which then grew in size; becoming similar to a soccer ball. "Oops! I forgot to mention one little thing! In order to do damage, you and I have to roll a dice first! Here, I'll demonstrate." the DM rolled his dice, landing on the number six. "Hmm, not bad, but not that good either. You ready, Ms. Luck?" The DM pulled out a pocket knife from his other pocket, extending the blade while pointing it directly at her neck. "I'll do six times the damage with this attack. But I'll target somewhere nonlethal! It's much more fun that way!"

Lady Luck wasn't going to simply stand there and let him hit her of course, however, as she tried to step back, her body wouldn't respond. She looked down at her own legs and her pupils doubled in size as she tried with all of her might to move them. She was even going as far as attempting to pull her legs manually with her arms, but it was as if she'd gone paralyzed. "Oh, did I forget to mention we're in a turn-based environment now? You cannot move while it's my turn! Now, prepare for my first attack!"

The DM thrusted his knife toward Lady Luc's leg, only for it to miss. Lady Luck didn't even flinch as the knife seemed to magically go around her.

[Miss]

"Damn it! Missed! I hate it when that happens. No matter, I believe it is your turn to roll the dice, Ms. Luck." The DM's ability basically turned real life into a turn-based RPG. Just like in those games, only one person could attack at a time. After attacking, there was a small chance that the attack could miss, even if the opponent stood still.

Lady Luck sighed before picking up the dice and dropping it lazily on the ground, rolling a twenty. "WHAT!?" The DM couldn't believe that she rolled a natural twenty on her first try. "So, what? I just hit you now?" The DM didn't answer, he simply stood in place and braced himself for impact. 'Please miss. Please miss. Please miss.'

Unlucky for the DM, Lady Luck did not miss, hitting him in the bottom of the jaw and sending him soaring backward. Lady Luck didn't really listen when he explained the rules, therefore she wasn't aware that this attack had done twenty times the damage. If the DM didn't grind to increase his Defense stat, he would've been dead. Lady Luck looked at her golf club in disbelief. "Woah– did I get an upgrade or something."

The DM, on the other hand, slowly but surely rose to his feet while rubbing his jaw. The attack hurt like hell, but he wasn't finished yet. "Well." his voice was distorted thanks to his broken jaw. "It would thseem luck wasth on your thside that thime, Lady Luck. My thurn!"

The DM somehow summoned a wheel in front of him, this wheel having all sorts of abilities labeled, including buffs, debuffs, spells, and physical attacks. In other words, the game he forced his opponents to play was completely unfair. He began looking through his ability wheel, all the while, Lady Luck was growing impatient. She sighed before asking, "Can I at least sit down while you read your little nerdy move list?"

"No! You can't move!" the DM told her. "That's my rules and you have to follow them. Now, let's see here– aha!" The DM, with his ability he called 'Dungoen', could set the rules to almost whatever he pleased. The only constant was that it would be his opponent's turn after he was done. However, he even had a work around for that. The DM touched a prompt with his finger, and green plus signs appeared over his body. He let out a sigh of relief. "All better. Now! I'll use my-"

"Wait, isn't it my turn?" Lady Luck interrupted him.

"No! It's my turn!"

"But you just went."

"No, healing abilities and buffs only count for half a turn. Now, watch this!" the DM pressed another prompt, causing a circle with a slash through it to appear over Lady Luck's head.

"Now, I skip your turn!"

"Your power is really lame. So you can just skip my turn whenever you want? That's stupid."

"Shut up! Now it's my turn again! Now I'll use this one!" the DM pressed yet another prompt, this time lowering Lady Luck's odds of rolling a high number during her next turn to practically zero. "Now you have a 99.9 percent chance to roll a one during your next roll!"

"So now it's my turn."

"No! It's still my turn! Buffs count as half turns!"

"That's still really stupid."

"You're stupid! Now, watch this! My turn!" Yet again, he chose another prompt, though it was the same one he used during his last turn and that same slashed circle appeared over Lady Luck's head. "Skipped your turn again!"

Lady Luck sighed. "This is getting ridiculous."

"Should've built a better deck!" said the DM, knowing full and well that only he was capable of choosing a deck. He'd hand-crafted this deck to practically give him an unlimited amount of turns. He never won with strategy or skill, he won by being a cheater.

This game of skipping Lady Luck's turn continued for nearly five minutes. The DM was just stacking buffs on himself and debuffs on Lady Luck. The crowd started to boo him, growing irritable after seeing them standing in the same spot for so long. "You realize there's a timer right? Then the fans vote for the winner. They aren't gonna vote for you." Lady Luck told him. She was even more irritable than the crowd.

"Silence woman!"

"JUST ATTACK ALREADY!" Lady Luck yelled.

"IN A MINUTE!" the DM shouted back at her as he continued messing with his ability wheel. "Here! With all of my buffs combined, this attack that normally has a one percent chance of instantly killing my opponent now has a 99.9999999 percent chance of killing you! Haha!" Despite these odds sounding incredibly high, Lady Luck didn't even flinch.

"Ok." Lady Luck's deadpan voice didn't emanate even an ounce of fear. "Does that mean you're going now or–"

"Silence! Big Bang Attack!" the DM held out his hand and a cartoonishly large meteor began hurling down toward Lady Luck from the sky. It was so large, it was blotting out the sun. Lady Luck looked up at it as it slowly approached her before looking back at the DM. "If it's so big, why is there usually a one percent chance of hitting? How can an attack like that miss? Are you like– really bad at your own game or something?"

"Just shut up and DIE!"

The meteor crashed down onto Lady Luck, pretty much destroying whatever was left of the stage. There was so much debris being blown everywhere, that no one could see what had happened to the golfer after the explosion, however when it all cleared, her silhouette became visible.

[Miss]

"WHAT!?"

"All that just to miss. You suck. Anyway, it's my turn. This time I won't hold back. Better hope you don't die." Lady Luck got into her golfing stance before taking a swing at the DM's head.

[CRITICAL HIT 50x DAMAGE]

The DM was sent flying out of the arena as if he were an actual golf ball, his body leaving a slipstream behind him before he disappeared as a twinkle in the clouds above. Lady Luck used her hand as a visor to block out the sun from her eyes, watching her opponent disappear. "Well, that was boring."

The entire crowd, including the announcer and both teams, were absolutely dumbfounded.

"I- I guess Lady Luck wins?" said the announcer, prompting the crowd to erupt. The score was now four to one, and all Team New York had to do was win two more and they'd move on to the next round.

Despite Lady Luck finally showing her stuff, no one knew what her powers were. When she made it back to her team, Tempo gave her a high five while also stealthily using his Psychometry ability. However, his ability was seemingly negated. 'What the hell?'

"How did you-" Tempo was going to ask how she negated his ability, but he stopped himself. She turned to him before leaning into his ear and whispering. "I'm just lucky."
