My name is Kadie, and I'm about to tell you the story of my life. So here's how it started, have a family tech company. Originally my sister Jillien was supposed to be the full air to take lead in the company. Although, she had suddenly gone missing, and the only other person left was my older brother Junon. Course after him I would be next in line, but I was still fixated on the sudden disappearance of our sister. I scavenged and scavenged but I couldn't find a trace of anything that connected to her. In the middle of my searching I was inside of the company building and I was temporarily blocked off of the system. I knew something was wrong, but I also knew I could do nothing and so I gave up.
Surprisingly my brother, Junon, held the company up pretty well. The way he kept inventing new things lead everyone to believe that he was capable of becoming the true successor. Our parents were never really part of the picture. They would always be on vacations spending the company funds, it disgusted me. So it was still obvious that my brother was doing pretty well, even making the company go to the top in advertisements. For myself, I had almost no business to do other than school. Then, with school I was not the best with making friends. I was always made fun of and looked down on because everyone thought that my family company was doomed to fall. I was just 16 in high school, normally you would have friends by then, but I didn't. That was until I met someone at a Starluck's Café. They were a kind and gentle person, my one and only best friend, Jayce. Yes, he was a 19-year-old college student, but we only made constant interactions at the cafe. Whenever we would hang out it would be at the park, in public. Usually when people saw us, they would think it was weird and awkward or even a bit creepy. I mean, what more is to expect from me who is like 5 ft and him who is like almost 6 ft tall.
Though, one day there came a suspicious looking bundle of people. They claimed to want a business talk with my brother, so of course he let them into his office. I knew right away something was wrong when they walked in. I didn't bother with meddling in this business stuff, so I was just trying to take a nap while sitting around to keep company. A part of the bundle of people, only two men in black and red suits came in with a small box offering it as a gift.
"These devices can take you into the future!" The first man eagerly placed the small box down onto the table. He sat on the opposite couch with the other man. "Oh, these are the only ones of their kind! We offer them to you, Junon, as free samples, gifts from Drec."
Â
Junon gazed into the box with the devices like it was a pot of gold. I almost immediately woke up after they were done talking. The moment I heard my brother speak I flinched and jolted up from my nap. "They seem promising... We'll take them." He slowly grabbed one and examined the small device.
I ended up getting one of the devices and it eventually stayed in my purse until I took it out the next day while on a walk. I held it up in the air and let the sunshine reflect off of the metal. It could fit inside of my palm, so I questioned how it would be capable of taking one to the future. There was just a small button on it making it easy to use. I was sure that I wouldn't use it anyway since I didn't plan on going into the future. Nonetheless, I placed it back in my bag and headed off to Starluck's cafe. The city was crowded with people, it was unusual, but I still ended up finding my way. I walked into the almost empty cafe, seeing Jayce wiping down the front counter. We happily waved to each other as I sat down to a table.
"Just a hot cocoa for tonight." I rested myself into the highchair and smiled as I spoke from near the counter.
Jayce was seen finishing up the counter as he placed the cloth and spray to the side. "Coming right up!" He happily began making the hot cocoa and finished off with sprinkling small marshmallows.
It was just around 4 on the clock which meant that his shift would end in about an hour. He still stayed an hour later most nights to clean up though. I scrolled on my phone while waiting for him to call out my name. I scrolled through and saw some random things talking about AI on social media, but it didn't interest me. It was so much already to think that within the time I lived was filled with technology, increasing the intelligence by the hour. I sighed with an uncomfortable rest as I placed my phone down, turning to unexpectedly see Jayce right behind me. Slightly startled, I jumped and made an oddly shocked expression. He giggled at me and gently placed down the hot cocoa.
"What were you looking at?" He smiled and sat down next to me. "I doubt you had interest if you put your phone down like that."
"Nah," I sighed with a lazy expression as I twirled the straw of the cup. "It's just AI, I'm really sick of having to look at new technology being invented. Like, 'Oh, this will help you use the bathroom better!' or 'You'll find this perfect sphere as a design full of capabilities!' What capabilities?!" I frantically but quietly spoke as I ranted out my thoughts to Jayce. "I mean, I would understand if someone made some AI that was so advanced that it actually helped out with anything you needed it to. Like security, cameras and robots these days have their flaws, if they can just learn like a human being; things would be solved." It took a while, but I realized that Jayce was simply staring at me with a soft smile, listening to me in peace. I lightly blushed and looked away, stopping my rant.
Jayce eventually realized that he was staring at all and cleared his throat. "Um, well, Kadie." I slightly looked at him again as he spoke. "I could try to make that type of AI for you sometime, just let me know whenever." There was an awkward silence for a moment until he rose from the seat. "I'll go back to cleaning up a bit so then we can leave a few minutes earlier. Careful with the hot cocoa." He smiled once more and walked off to go behind the counter.
I forget to mention, Jayce is a little chubby, well a lot. In my opinion though, I thought it was actually adorable. He always looked like a formidable pillow. I watched him go around and start cleaning anything and felt my cheeks. They were so warm that I decided to simply sit away at the hot cocoa, even though it would've made it worse. I checked the time again and it was getting closer to 6, just a half hour left. I finished the drink within minutes and ended up feeling tired. I napped as my arms supported my head on the flat table. Thinking back to the stare Jayce gave me, my heart fluttered at how peaceful he looked. I'd always had feelings for him, yet I was too nervous to tell him. It was obvious that the age gap was too far from a proper relationship so that's why I kept my mouth shut. Often, I thought that Jayce would end up finding a girl from his college and we would get more distant with each other. My heart would definitely break, but if he were happy at all, that would make me at peace on the fact. Although, my thoughts drifted as I entered my deep nap. With twists and turns, I felt odd and eventually I woke up. With a quiet groan, my body attempted to shift with an odd feeling while still sitting down. My sight was a bit blurry as I rubbed my eyes and adjusted to the view. I was still in the Starluck's Café, at least I thought I was. Glancing around, I noticed that it was slightly dark, and no one was seen other than a slender man a few feet away. Once he turned a bit, allowing my eyes to settle on his side profile, I saw him. I saw the only familiar face and it shocked me to the core. I almost thought I was dreaming, like a greedy thought was place inside my head. He finally noticed me and waved his hand in my face, using it as a flashlight. I held my arm up, seeing it was too bright, and confirming it was not a dream. The man who stood in front, staring at me in utter shock let out a quick sigh of relief, followed by a worried smile. His hand was lowered, and the light diminished, letting me get a decent look at that face. He was absolutely handsome, yet it was odd to me that it was Jayce. That moment was the moment I realized I went into the future. I'm Kadie Muvier and I just time warped.
