"Sorry, Professor Heimerdinger, for turning your office into such a mess," Li Lin apologized as he retracted the iron barrier, surveying the chaotic office.
"It's not your fault, kid..."
Li Lin could sense the frustration in Heimerdinger's tone, but it wasn't directed at him.
Heimerdinger then approached Ziggs, who had just realized his mistake, and angrily shouted, "Ziggs, you are utterly unreasonable! I explicitly warned you not to engage in such dangerous experiments! Look at what you've done to my office!"
This was the first time Li Lin had seen Heimerdinger lose his temper to this extent. However, he felt that Ziggs, who enjoyed playing with fire and seeking excitement, deserved it and wasn't worthy of sympathy.
With a lowered face, Ziggs defended himself, "But this wasn't my doing..."
Hearing this, Li Lin's initial calmness gave way to a surge of anger. If it weren't for his time spent in Piltover, dealing with the polite Kiramman family, he might have unleashed a five-minute tirade on Ziggs.
As Ziggs tried to shift the blame, Heimerdinger's anger intensified.
"If it weren't for you, Li Lin wouldn't have used his... uh, what was it again?"
"Iron barrier," Li Lin reminded.
"Yes, how could he have used that expandable iron barrier!"
Heimerdinger suddenly turned his attention to Li Lin, his eyes shining with curiosity.
"Kid, can you show me this so-called 'iron barrier' of yours?"
Wait, why did his thought process change so quickly? One moment he was scolding Ziggs, and the next, he was focused on my invention...
Suppressing the urge to retort, Li Lin said, "Of course, Professor."
He then handed a palm-sized, relatively light iron block from his pocket to Heimerdinger.
"How does such a small piece of iron expand into such a large space?" Heimerdinger inquired, inspecting the "iron barrier" and occasionally stroking his white beard, lost in thought, seemingly oblivious to Li Lin and Ziggs.
After a while, with a curious gleam in his eyes, Heimerdinger looked up at Li Lin.
"Kid, how did you make it grow?"
"There's an activation device here, Professor."
Li Lin pointed to a spot on the iron block that was slightly different in color from the rest.
"If you short-press it, it becomes an expanded iron shield. If you long-press and throw it on the ground, it transforms into the room you just saw."
Following Li Lin's instructions, Heimerdinger lightly pressed the designated area.
A series of mechanical metal friction sounds echoed, and in just a second, the palm-sized iron block unfolded into a steel shield almost as tall as Heimerdinger.
"Oh, may the gears turn smoothly. This is a truly an unexpected invention... How did you achieve this, kid?" Heimerdinger exclaimed.
"I accidentally created it," Li Lin explained, sparing no details as he recounted the principles of the "iron barrier" that he had learned through the system panel.
After all, this technological device utilized "material compression" technology, and Li Lin believed that Heimerdinger, the elderly and knowledgeable Yordle, had a deeper understanding of science than he did.
If Heimerdinger could study it, he might advance the "material compression" technology even further.
For a mechanical engineer like Li Lin, the ability to summon an entire army of steel with a wave of his hand was crucial, and the sooner this technology was perfected, the better. It would not only benefit his development but also alleviate some pressure when dealing with significant events and crises that affected the world.
Li Lin quickly explained the principles of the "iron barrier" to Heimerdinger and briefly described his ideas about "material compression."
After listening, Heimerdinger contemplated for a while, furrowing his brow as he considered the feasibility of Li Lin's explanation.
Finally, after some time, he blew on his beard and returned to reality. "Hmm, it's a great idea to compress materials in a certain way... I'll study it further later."
"In that case, this device is a gift for you, Professor."
"Oh, you're really generous, kid. Thank you. Just leave it there for now."
Li Lin helped Heimerdinger retract the expanded steel shield, turning it back into an iron block. He then placed it on a mini desk that had escaped the chaos.
With this problem temporarily solved, Heimerdinger's gaze shifted to Ziggs, who appeared restless and nervous.
"I'm sorry, Ziggs, considering your recent actions, I might have to ask you to return to Bandle City and study for some time."
"What? No, Professor Heimerdinger, you can't do this!"
Tears welled up in Ziggs' eyes, portraying a sorrowful expression.
Unfortunately, Heimerdinger had already made up his mind, and Li Lin also didn't want this "dangerous individual" to stay in Piltover.
Even though there might not be another Jinx causing trouble in the future, explosions and such would only bring more trouble to the twin cities.
Seeing Heimerdinger's unyielding attitude, Ziggs knew he had no chance. He had to bid farewell to Heimerdinger with a disappointed sigh, then leave the chaotic office to prepare his luggage and return to Bandle City.
As Ziggs left, Heimerdinger looked at his office, shook his head, and sighed deeply.
"Do you need help organizing, Professor?" Li Lin suggested.
"No, let my assistant do it," Heimerdinger waved his hand, taking small steps as he walked towards the door. "Come with me, child. I have something important to discuss with you today."
...
Li Lin followed Heimerdinger, arriving at the laboratory. With Heimerdinger leading, the security personnel in the lab didn't even bother checking their ID cards and let them in.
Inside, they took an elevator to the lower floor of the lab and walked to a spacious blast-proof room dedicated to experimenting with dangerous explosive devices.
In the center of the room were three devices, half the height of Heimerdinger, resembling baseball pitching machines.
Li Lin's eyes lit up; he was very familiar with these devices.
Aren't these the turrets placed by Heimerdinger's Q ability in the game?
"Your support chip gave me great inspiration. So, based on the projectile launcher I designed for the children in Bandle City, I created these turrets," Heimerdinger explained.
"I named them H-28G Evolution Turrets. They can automatically target and attack moving objects, something your original support chip couldn't do."
"Unfortunately, they still require input commands to launch energy projectiles. I need to lock the target with a remote control device, and they cannot self-calculate or identify enemies."
With that, Heimerdinger pressed a button on the control panel beside him.
As a loud mechanical gear turning sound echoed, the floor at the center of the blast-proof room separated into two, and a platform with huge rocks slowly rose.
Once all the mechanical devices stabilized, Heimerdinger opened a drawer, took out a remote control device resembling a TV remote, and pressed a red button facing the distant rocks.
In the next second, the three previously quiet turrets suddenly came to life. In just two seconds, they rapidly unfolded.
Locked onto the distant rocks using infrared, they unleashed a barrage of attacks, occasionally shooting a blue-white hot laser.
The energy core of these turrets used Hextech crystal, displaying attack power even higher than the weapon system of Li Lin's Project Genesis: Infinite Kinetic Armor.
But Heimerdinger wanted to show Li Lin more.
Pressing another button, several grooves unfolded on the turrets, each revealing a shiny black nozzle.
Subsequently, the bottom of the turrets emitted blue flames, and the nozzles on the other parts of the turrets started operating, slightly adjusting their angles. The turrets floated into the air, conducting a "guerrilla warfare" in mid-air, quickly passing through and continuously shooting at the target.
Only when the massive rocks were completely reduced to pieces not exceeding the size of a fingernail did the slightly overheated turrets come to a stop.
Li Lin was completely stunned by the scene before him.
He was well aware that Heimerdinger used to be explicitly against creating weapons.
But now, for the sake of researching artificial intelligence, he had designed something so deadly, including many technologies Li Lin desired.
Such as the technology to track and shoot continuously after manually locking onto the enemy and the floating turret technology.
Even though these couldn't be considered "semi-finished artificial intelligence," Li Lin was already satisfied with these achievements.
"Professor Heimerdinger, your design is truly beyond my expectations!" Li Lin praised sincerely.
"Sigh, it's a pity I couldn't figure out how to make these machines self-calculate," Heimerdinger lamented. "It requires computers and networks, something you would be truly impressive if you could research."
Li Lin shook his head, smiling, "For now, reaching this level is already more than enough."
