Chapter 1 - Project Verdantvail

The hallways of Ulsan Genesis Biotech bustled with scientists, their footsteps echoing in an orderly rhythm as they moved with purposeful strides, their white coats fluttering behind them like a sea of lab-bound uniforms. Amongst this tide of people, a single woman in a vibrant lab coat stood out, her face adorned with a warm smile.

As she walked, a familiar hand raised in the sea of scientists and called out, "Dr. Eun-ji!" The figure waved enthusiastically, and she quickened her pace to meet him.

"Dr. Kim! Interesting to see you today," Dr. Eun-ji said, her smile brightening the corridor.

"Interesting indeed. I need you to come see something," Dr. Kim replied, his voice tense.

"Why? Is there something wrong with Project Verdantvail?" Dr. Eun-ji asked, concern creeping into her tone.

"Don't get tense. It isn't much of a problem"Dr. Kim replied with a calm tone to soothe her. He brings to walk away and Dr.Eun-ji followed close. As they walked through the hallways, navigating left and right, they finally reached a door. Dr. Kim pulled out a card and swiped it across the reader, the door unlocking with a soft beep.

"After you," he said, gesturing for Dr. Eun-ji to enter.

Inside, the room was dimly lit, filled with equipment and the faint hum of machines. And several scientists roaming about. On the central screen, data flickered—graphs and numbers that hinted at something significant.

"Look at this," Dr. Kim said, pointing to the display. "We've encountered unexpected fluctuations in the results."

Dr. Eun-ji leaned closer, her heart racing as she studied the data. "This could impact the entire project. We need to analyze this further."

"Exactly. That's why I brought you here," Dr. Kim replied, urgency in his voice. "I knew you'd want to see it right away."

"You mean that , the tree is yet in its state?"Dr. Eun Ji asked.

"Yes, it hasn't changed . And it's got even darker" Dr. Kim replied.

"Turn on the lights in the greenhouse," Dr. Eun-ji ordered.

As the lights flickered on, the room beyond the glass illuminated rows of plants, their vibrant greens thriving under the glow. However, one particular tree stood out, its leaves unusually dark compared to the others.

"Look at that one," Dr. Kim pointed. "It hasn't changed at all."

Dr. Eun-ji frowned. "This could impact the entire project. We need to analyze it immediately."

"Exactly. That's why I brought you here," Dr. Kim replied, urgency in his voice.

"Let's gather the team and start examining the samples," Dr. Eun-ji said, determination replacing her concern. They both knew the future of Project Verdantvail depended on their next steps.

As the well-geared team, led by Dr. Kim, entered the greenhouse, Dr. Eun-ji watched anxiously from behind the glass. They approached the dark tree, and Dr. Kim leaned closer, inspecting it carefully until he spotted a small dark mushroom at its base.

"What is that?" he wondered aloud, reaching for it.

Suddenly, the mushroom burst, releasing a small cloud of black smoke that quickly dissipated into the air. The team inhaled it before they could react, and within moments, the gas vanished, leaving an eerie silence.

"Is it gone?" Dr. Kim asked, his vision starting to blur.

As they assessed the tree, they began to feel dizzy, swaying on their feet. The tree's leaves fell like autumn leaves caught in a tempest, rapidly wilting and crumbling.

"Dr. Kim!" Dr. Eun-ji shouted, panic rising in her chest.

Within seconds, the tree succumbed completely, collapsing lifelessly as the entire team collapsed, unconscious on the ground. Dr. Eun-ji's heart raced as she realized the horrifying outcome of their discovery. Frantically, she called for help, knowing time was running out.

Dr. Kim slowly opened his eyes, blinking against the harsh light of the infirmary. As his vision cleared, he felt a gentle warmth in his hand. Turning his head, he saw Dr. Eun-ji sitting beside him, her eyes filled with worry.

"Eun-ji?" he croaked, his voice hoarse.

She looked up, relief washing over her face. "Oh, thank goodness! I was so worried about you."

"What happened?" Dr. Kim asked, trying to sit up.

"Easy! You collapsed in the greenhouse after the incident with the tree. We were all knocked out," she explained, squeezing his hand tighter.

He winced slightly, then softened. "I'm sorry. I should have been more careful."

"Don't apologize. I was terrified when you fell. I thought… I thought I might lose you," she admitted, her eyes glistening.

Dr. Kim reached up, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "You won't lose me. I promise."

Eun-ji leaned closer, her voice trembling. "We need to figure out what went wrong and stop this before it escalates."

He nodded, determination in his eyes. "Together. We'll face this challenge, just like we always do."

With a shared understanding, they both knew their bond was stronger than any crisis they faced.

As Eun Ji turned to leave, a chilling spectacle unfolded before her eyes. The team, including Dr. Kim, began to twitch uncontrollably, their bodies convulsing in violent spasms. They screamed in unison, their voices echoing through the hallway as they banged their heads on the floor.

Eun Ji's heart raced as she froze in horror, her mind struggling to comprehend the scene before her. Dr. Kim, the man she had grown to trust, respect and loved, was now a grotesque shadow of his former self. His body began to mutate, a mushroom-like growth sprouting from his head like a macabre crown.

As she watched in terror, Dr. Kim turned to face her, his eyes vacant and unrecognizable. He lunged at her with an unnatural bounce, his arms outstretched like a mindless beast. Eun Ji dodged him narrowly, her heart pounding in her chest.

But Dr. Kim was not to be deterred. He pounced on a passing stranger, his body contorting in ways that defied human physiology. The stranger's screams were drowned out by the chaos that erupted in the hallway, as the rest of the team began to attack each other with similar ferocity.

The once-ordered hallway was now a scene of utter chaos, with bodies bouncing off walls and floors like rubber balls. Eun Ji's mind reeled as she stumbled backward, desperate to escape the madness that had consumed her colleagues.

What was happening? How could this be happening? The questions swirled in her mind like a maelstrom, but she had no time to find answers. She had to get out, and fast, before she became the next victim of this unholy transformation.

Eun-ji's heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs as she scrambled towards her lab, the shrill fire alarm a relentless counterpoint. This sterile haven, the birthplace of Project Verdantvail, now felt like a cage. But abandoning her life's work was unthinkable.

Reaching the door, she fumbled with her keycard, the plastic cool against her clammy skin. A sickening crunch from the hallway made her fingers fumble, the card finally granting access with a reassuring beep. Slamming the door shut, she bolted the lock with a metallic clang.

The fire alarm's wail seemed to mock her flimsy security. She needed to act fast. Ignoring the flashing lights, Eun-ji dove towards her workstation, fingers flying across the keyboard. Lines of code blurred as she raced against the encroaching chaos. This was her only defense, a digital fortress against the organic nightmare.

Just as she reached the final command, a bone-jarring crack echoed through the lab. The keycard lock had yielded under the monstrous assault. A grotesque hand, pulsing with an unnatural green glow, clawed through the splintered doorway.

Eun-ji's breath hitched, but her hands continued to move on autopilot. A vial on her desk, filled with a glowing green liquid – the essence of Project Verdantvail – held her gaze. It was more than research now, a desperate hope, a weapon against its own monstrous creation.

A sad smile played on her lips as Dr. Kim's mutated form lurched into the room. Tears streamed down her face, a heartbreaking mix of grief and unwavering resolve.

"Goodbye, Kim," she whispered, her voice surprisingly firm. "May this... save what you've become."

With a final, lingering glance at the vial, she slammed her finger down on the enter key. A blinding green light engulfed the lab, followed by a deafening crack that echoed through the entire facility. The walls shuddered, the greenhouse windows imploded inwards.

Eun-ji didn't know if it was success or oblivion that awaited her on the other side of the emerald explosion. The fate of the lab, Dr. Kim, and Project Verdantvail itself was a horrifying mystery.
