Chapter 39 - Forgotten Chapel-N

The sensation of the hard stone floor touching my skin and the sound of water drops falling to the ground reignited my conscience. My clothes were soaked and heavy, yet it didn't hinder my movement much, allowing me to stand up without much of a problem.

As I looked around I took notice of a few things of interest, mainly the large yet rundown chapel that stood upon a hill in the distance, and the long stone road I was on leading to it, the land surrounding the chapel was covered in graves and white flowers which seemed to emerge from the bodies beneath the ground.

I found my red and long sword embedded deep into the stone road beside me and my bag a few steps forward. As I went to grab my things I tried to remember what happened before but it was kind of hazy. I'm unsure of how much time I spent in the trap-infested hallway but I remember that I eventually reached some sort of door, it wasn't the red gate but it felt similar. After touching the door everything turned hazy in my mind and the next thing I know, I'm here.

After putting my weapons and bag back into place I strolled towards the chapel. There were bodies clad in armor every few meters but they were all too damaged to use, so I sadly decided not to take anything for it would be useless even if I did. However what I did take were the leather canteens that many of the deceased had, some were empty and others were contaminated with blood or dirt, but I took them all regardless. By the time I reached the chapel, I had about twenty-four of these, some of which contained wine.

I didn't immediately open the doors of the chapel but looked at the structure in confusion. It was eerily familiar, not like something you've seen before but forgot about it, it was hard to describe but if I had to...I would say that it feels like something I should know but I don't for whatever reason.

Staring at the rundown chapel wouldn't amount to anything so I opened the large doors, despite them towering over me, moving them was extremely easy. The sound of the doors opening and cracking was quite loud but it didn't seem like there was anyone inside so it didn't matter. The place felt humid and was really dark, thankfully there were multiple torches on some of the walls so I took one and lit the fire using a match and the wine I had found earlier.

"I'm starting to run low on these..."

With the torch in hand, I started walking through the chapel. It wasn't like any I had ever seen before, It was way too big and grandiose despite its precarious state, it looked more like what I would expect a Cathedral to look like. The interior of the building seems to resemble a cross, with multiple pillars holding the high ceiling decorated with paintings now unrecognizable.

Upon the highest part of the wall were rows of stained glass windows depicting multiple bizarre creatures. Some were intact while some were broken, there were many but two of them caught my attention the most. The first one depicted a dark creature with snake-like scales instead of skin towering over an abyss. While watching this window I felt as if I was watching the picture of someone I knew but didn't remember.

I then turned around to see the second window, a large red man depicted with long white hair and an asymmetrical appearance. This one gave a different feeling, it was nostalgia, but in a bad way. Looking at it made my stomach twist and my head hurt, as if my own body was telling me not to look at it, not to think about it.

My body is my greatest ally, so I should not ignore its advice. I averted my gaze from the stained glass and kept on walking. Just like the outside of the chapel, the inside was also riddled with corpses, mainly nuns dressed in black and priests covered in red robes, all of them slain by arrows and swords. Not much to plunder here, though I did take an amulet from one of the red-wearing priests, shaped like a human heart with three eyes engraved on it.

As I kept on walking on the hard stone floor of the chapel, blood and corpses kept on filling my view, laying in different and gruesome positions and shapes, almost as if they were a road leading me somewhere. Their bodies twisted in horrifying ways, but their faces contorted in deranged smiles with their right hand always pointing forward, it was unnerving at the very least, but I didn't feel fear or disgust from it, I couldn't say that I had seen worse, but im numb to the sight of the dead.

The road of corpses led me to an altar in the deepest part of the chapel, drenched in blood. Another corpse lay atop the altar, a young woman with dead red eyes and snow white hair, a crimson sword impaled through her heart, and a dark sword stabbed cleanly through her forehead, her gaze fixated on the ceiling above. I couldn't avoid following her gaze upwards, towards the ceiling just as the dead girl was doing, and a feeling of dread invaded me as a result.

Decaying skin covered by pitch black fur, its elongated humanoid face was twisted downwards as it used its claw to stay fixed on the ceiling. Its bulging eyes twisted and roamed until they took notice of me right below him. It was the same damn monster I saw on the first floor.

Without doubting it I took the crimson sword from the corpse's heart before jumping away. The place I had just been standing on a moment ago was sunken by the beast falling on it, the altar and the corpse were no more, just a red mist and flesh remained. The beast arose from the cloud of blood and dust with a sadistic grin on its face, the black sword had somewhat stabbed it in the right side of the stomach but it didn't seem to care. The grin on that thing, with its first row of fangs and the second row of human teeth was something out of the worst nightmares of the worst people to ever live.

With the two crimson swords in hand, I slowly stepped back, hoping that the damn thing wouldn't try to kill me in some horrible way, but such an effort was fruitless. The beast leaped towards me with its mouth wide open as if it was trying to swallow me whole. I immediately jumped away, trying to slash at the creature's face right after but my blade only grazed it.

That thing laughed at my attempt. Its laugh echoed through the chapel and into my head like a bullet, it was scary and disgusting, but I didn't dare to run like I had done before on the first floor, instead, I threw my bag away and gripped my swords tightly while keeping the damn monster on my sight.

Once again the monster rushed towards me, its claw reaching out to try to grab me so I rolled to the side and tried to stab its hand, but the sword didn't penetrate its rotten skin, the next thing I knew was that my body was embedded deep into the chapel walls. An extremely sharp pain coursed through my body from my back, and the red substance cascading over my eyes turned my vision red as I tried to get out of the wall. Pain has never been a problem for me, but the damage was another story...my body simply responded to me. I could feel my lungs filling up with blood, and see my bone stabbing through my right arm from the inside.

That damn thing smiled as it approached me, saliva mixed with blood dripping from its mouth. The ground shattered below its steps as it laughed, mocking me. My left hand kept on gripping the sword as I watched the monster getting closer, the smile on its ugly face made me angry, but for some reason, a smile forced itself upon my face.

Before long, the monster was right in front of me, sniffing the scent of the blood dripping from my battered body with a delighted smile, not noticing the movement in my left arm. The next second, before it could open its jaws, I stabbed my sword through its eye. The creature howled as it recoiled in pain, but I didn't let go of the sword until I was out of the hole, falling to the ground somewhat far away from the creature as I did so. My already broken right arm was pierced by the metal pieces of the armor I wore over it, just as broken as the arm.

I thought of reaching into my coat for a healing vial, but given that even my bones broke even though the vest and coat should have protected me, the vials could have possibly survived. I tried to get up but i couldnt muster the strengt to do so.

"fucking monster..."

I couldn't avoid muttering my frustration as I saw the damn monster taking the sword out of its eye with its hand, recovering almost immediately. My eyes wandered around me in search of anything that could help me avoid death, landing upon the bag I had thrown before. It had opened somehow, and from it a small wooden box fell, breaking as it touched the ground, letting a black fruit, barely the size of a strawberry roll out of the broken box.

"Did I put that in my bag?... I should remember..."

An ominous and foreboding feeling invaded my mind as i saw that fruit roll towards me, stopping upon hitting my hand. Something was telling to not even touch the strange fruit, but at the same time i had a feeling that it could be my only path to salvation. Seeing that monster growling at me while showing me its teeth only made that feeling even stronger.

"to hell with it!"

I took the fruit with blood spilling from my mouth and ate it in one bite. The moment the fruit fell down my throat I felt my heart stop beating for an instant, and an extreme pain assaulted me from the inside, as if my heart was about to break through my chest.

"AGH!?"

Horrible, absolutely horrible, it wasn't the kind of pain I'd felt before, it was way too much, just too much. I screamed in pain in an attempt to lessen the pain but it was futile, I grabbed my chest and wailed in pain as that monster once again leaped towards me with claws ready to eviscerate me. I wanted to take the black sword embedded in its body and cut the damn thing in half, I wanted to see it bleed and die in front of me, but I was the one going to die instead...FUCK!

"B-Bastard...GO TO HELL AND DIE!"

The air turned cold as those words came out of my mouth. The next instant a red line appeared between the beast's eyes, and blood oozed from it...before it was split in half vertically, both halves flew past me and struck the ground, making it shake.

"W-what?...what happened?"

I looked at the dead body of the monster in awe. I heard something dripping onto the floor, I looked down to see a drop of some kind of black liquid, and then another drop fell right beside it and a wet sensation on my face made me realize something. I touched my face, feeling my finger get wet, and looked at them, a black substance had stained them.

My entire body started to melt, turning into that black substance. There was no pain, just a feeling of dizziness as I started to lose consciousness. Soon enough, my eyes had melted...and I was no more.
