Chapter 9 - Hunt gone wrong-T

"Is this really a good idea?"

"Do you have any other ideas?"

Nayuta and i went out the house while Haruto and Sophia stayed to fortify it with anything they could find. Meanwhile we lurked in the streets, killing every monster that we encountered to make sure it was safe, we managed to kill a lot of them but we had strayed far away from the house.

I had my doubts about killing so easily, it's obvious to me that these things aren't humans, but they still look like humans. Sophia was scared beyond belief everytime she saw one of them and Haruto's hand were shaking even if he didn't notice, he was probably only able to kill those monsters in the heat of the moment.

On the other side Nayuta killed them effortlessly. She would swing the bat and break their skulls without even looking disgusted. Honestly it wasn't all that surprising, she has done things that could be considered somewhat similar, like taking revenge for us in more than one occasion, this seems like an exaggeration of that, a revenge.

After killing all the monsters in the nearby streets we began scouting the houses in search of anything useful. Surprisingly she was able to find various things.

Among the items that we collected were some utensils, a cooking pot, an oil lamp and some kind of sewing kit. Sadly we couldn't find any oil for the lamp so the moment night falls we would be completely in the dark.

Once we checked all the nearby houses we decided to come back, but we heard something that catched our attention.

It was the sound of flapping wings.

"It sounds like a bird...maybe we could try catching it"

We don't have much food so hunting that bird was pretty much necessary.

"But how?"

Nayuta seemed to agree with my idea, but there indeed was the problem of catching it, and finding it to being with.

We followed the sound for a while. It proved to be quite troublesome to do so in a town like this but the sound was constant so even when we lost it, it didn't took much time before hearing it again.

When the sound finally stopped above a single floor house and we went after it, climbing the house wall onto it's roof. We hunted it closely but when we managed to spot it we got an unnerving surprise. The thing we were hunting wasn't some kind of animal but a deranged creature from hell.

A giant eye with blood red eyelids and tattered batwings. The eye itself was grotesque as it's blood vessels were bulging beyond what it should be capable off, as if it was about to explode.

That monster didn't looked particularly dangerous, actually it looked more feeble and weak that the zombies we have been hunting, but it was way too unnerving. I wanted to leave it alone and go before it noticed us just as a precaution but contrary to myself Nayuta was determined to kill it.

"If we leave something like that roaming around the rest will eventually see it and they definitely won't handle it well"

Well...she's right, those zombies are already bad enough if Sophia sees this thing she will probably faint.

As i was thinking this Nayuta picked a stone brick from the roof floor and threw it at the monster. As it hit it, it's bulging blood vessels outright explode, the corpse fell in the same roof but the brick fell and breaked loudly on the street, making echo through the narrow streets and houses.

The monster was dead and as we approached its body we saw a crimson glint coming from inside it. I was reluctant to check it but Nayuta didn't seemed to care and plunged her hand inside the corpse and took a small red gem from it.

"It's salty" she added

She tried to bite it and a small crack appeared on it, it looked brittle.

"What are you gonna do with that?"

"I don't know but it might be useful"

It was obvious that she just wanted to keep the pretty rock she found but i kept that for myself. That thing is gross since it's covered in that thing blood but atleast it doesn't look dangerous, well it has sharp edges so i guess you could get a nasty cut but other than it seems harmless.

"Should we get going?" Nayuta said.

"Sure"

As we approach the edge to climb back down we stopped as we heard an unnatural sound. It was a sound similar to an stampede.

We looked around and it didn't took long for us go find the source. Just a few dozen meters away a huge amount of zombies were running towards us, probably attracted to the sound the brick made when it felt and break.

I flinched at the sight of those monsters and instinctively tried to run away but i was stopped by Nayuta, who held my wrist. I could see the nervousness in her face but she wasn't scared

"It doesn't look like we can outrun them and get to the house safely"

She looked at me at the eyes while strengthening her grip on my wrist, she has always been stronger than most so there wasn't much i could do.

"We could make a run for it and barricade ourselves in the house..."

"Don't even try, we shouldn't endanger Sophia and Haruto"

...she's right, running away isn't even a good idea, this place is full of alleyways so we could try to lose them using them but one wrong turn and we would be trapped between a wall and a horde of zombies.

Seeing that i calmed down Nayuta released her grip from my wrist. I thought there she would have left a mark but there wasn't any, it still hurts though.

"I'm sorry, is probably my fault that these monsters came out, but you would have probably died otherwise"

Well then it seems we have to take care of them somehow.

"How troublesome"

It wasn't long before that horde crashed against the walls of the house. They started scratching and biting the walls but thankfully it didn't seem like they could climb, so we should be safe for now.

"Do you have anything that could be of use now?"

I asked Nayuta since she usually always carry her bag with her and that thing is full of all kind of unexpected things. However i was quick to realize that it wasn't the case this time since she didn't brought her bag with her.

"I just have this pretty gem and Haruto's bat...oh and some coins"

She took a bunch of one hundred yen coins from her pocket, but that's not going to be useful at all. We could try to fight them but with just a bat that's impossible, i have my knife but honestly that's even more useless than the bat against those monsters.

"Well...fuck"
